Analysis of the subcellular location of lncRNA SLC16A1-AS1 and its interaction with premature miR-5088-5p in oral squamous cell carcinoma
AbstractSLC16A1-AS1 is a newly identified lncRNA with different roles in different cancers. MiR-5088-5p is an oncogenic miRNA in breast cancer. However, their participation in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is unknown. We predicted the interaction between SLC16A1-AS1 and miR-5088-5p, and this study was carried out to explore the crosstalk between them in OSCC. A total of 56 OSCC patients donated OSCC and paired non-tumor tissues, which were used to detect the differential expression of SLC16A1-AS1 and miR-5088-5p (mature and premature). Analysis of the subcellular location of SLC16A1-AS1 in OSCC cells and its direct i...

The optimization of ligature/bone defect-induced periodontitis model in rats
In this study, we created periodontitis rat models in silk ligation group, bone defect group and bone defect/silk ligation group, respectively. Obvious periodontal inflammation but slight alveolar bone resorption was observed in the ligation group, while surgical trauma was not robust enough to continually worsen the constructed bone defect area in the bone defect group. In the bone defect/ligature group, significant and stable periodontal inflammation was the most enduring with similar evolving pathological patterns of human periodontitis. It also exhibited enhanced clinical similarity and confirmed its superiority in qua...

Role of magnesium-doped calcium sulfate and β-tricalcium phosphate composite ceramics in macrophage polarization and osteo-induction
AbstractIn the current study, we explored the role of Mg2+-doped CaSO4/ β-TCP composite biopolymer in regulating macrophage polarization and its relation with enhanced osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cells. Furthermore, mechanism underling the regulation of macrophage polarization by CaSO4/ β-TCP was evaluated. Mg2+-doped CaSO4/ β-TCP composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Macrophage polarization was characterized using flow cytometry analysis. Macrophage morphometric analysis was conducted by FITC phalloidin staining. Western blot and qRT-P...

The association between dental caries and physical activity, physical fitness, and background factors among Finnish male conscripts
AbstractStudies on measured physical fitness and oral health are sparse. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between self-reported physical activity and measured physical fitness and oral health of young men. The study population consisted of 13,564 Finnish male conscripts who had mandatory clinical oral examinations and physical fitness tests at the beginning of military service in 2011. Finally, around 10,800 conscripts had physical fitness test outcomes available and a total of 8552 conscripts answered a computer-based questionnaire on background factors. Decayed Tooth (DT) and Decayed, Missing, or...

External validation of cone-beam computed tomography- and panoramic radiography-featured prediction models for inferior alveolar nerve injury after lower third molar removal: proposal of a risk calculator
AbstractWe previously developed basic and extended models to predict inferior alveolar nerve injuries (IANI) after lower third molar (LM3) removal based on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Although these models comprised predictors, including increased age and inferior alveolar canal-related CBCT factors, external validations were lacking. Therefore, this study externally validated these models and compared them with other related models based on their performance. Original and newly validated samples included patients who underwent LM3 removal following CBCT. Subsequently, 39 and 25 patients with IANI, then 45...

Root canal narrowing patterns of mandibular first premolars on panoramic radiographs according to the number of root canals diagnosed on cone beam computed tomographic images
This study aimed to investigate the characteristic radiographic findings of mandibular first premolars possessing multiple root canals and determine the diagnostic accuracy using panoramic radiography. Four radiologists evaluated 347 mandibular first premolars in 186 patients who underwent panoramic radiography and dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Two radiologists confirmed the existence of single or multiple root canals using CBCT. The remaining two radiologists evaluated the imaging findings of the root canal morphology and classified them into two patterns: gradual narrowing and sudden narrowing. In the case...

Management of fear and anxiety in dental treatments: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
ConclusionsInterventions should be used in managing anxiety and fear for dental treatment. It might be effective for anxiety alleviating for adults, but there was a low certainty of evidence that interventions could reduce anxiety level in children and adolescents. Sedation drugs and audio –visual distractions might be useful for managing dental fear and anxiety. Pain levels and vital signs could not be improved form our study. High-quality randomized clinical trials are required for further study. (Source: Odontology)
