Papillomaviruses and cancer: commonalities and differences in HPV carcinogenesis at different sites of the body
AbstractHuman papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with 5% of all cancers globally at a range of body sites, including cervix, anus, penis, vagina, vulva, and oropharynx. These cancers claim  >  400,000 lives annually. The persistent infection of HPV and the function of viral oncogenes are the primary causes of HPV-related cancers. However, only some HPV-infected persons or infected lesions will progress to cancer, and the burden of HPV-associated cancer varies widely according to gender and the part of the body infected. The dissimilarity in infection rates at different sites can explain only a small part of the diff...

Lower optimal dose of amrubicin for relapsed small-cell lung cancer: a retrospective study
ConclusionTreatment with AMR between 30 and 35  mg/m2 showed relatively mild hematologic toxicity compared with AMR at 40  mg/m2, without any significant difference in efficacy. Lower dose of AMR for relapsed SCLC could be a promising treatment option. (Source: International Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Systematic surveillance of immune-related adverse events in clinical practice and impact of subsequent steroid medication on survival outcomes
ConclusionSteroid treatment for irAE does not affect prognosis and should thus be used promptly to control inflammation. However, pulse therapy for severe cases is a poor prognostic factor, and early detection remains the key to managing such irAEs. The irAE characteristics in each regimen should be clarified to establish and provide more sophisticated irAE management, and the current findings will be beneficial to this goal. Trends and issues in clinical research on satisfaction and quality of life after mastectomy and breast reconstruction: a 5-year scoping review
AbstractBreast reconstruction (BR) aims to improve the satisfaction and quality of life (QOL) of breast cancer survivors. Clinical studies using patient-reported outcomes (PROs) can therefore provide relevant information to the patients and support decision-making. This scoping review was conducted to analyze recent trends in world regions, methods used, and factors investigated. The literature search was conducted in August 2022. Databases of PubMed, MEDLINE, and CINAHL were searched for relevant English-language studies published from 2017 to 2022. Studies involving women with breast cancer who underwent BR after mastect...

Current status of CAR-T cell therapy for pediatric hematologic malignancies
AbstractAcute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer in the pediatric population, and the long-term survival can reach 90%. However, approximately, 20% of pediatric ALL patients experience relapse and require second-line chemotherapy. This is frequently followed by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, which can cause long-term sequelae. Recent advances in immunotherapy, such as monoclonal antibody therapy and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy, have revolutionized the treatment of relapsed and refractory ALL. Anti-CD19 CAR-T cells successfully eliminate B cell malignancies such as ALL. Tisag...

Thioredoxin reductase as a novel biomarker for the diagnosis and efficacy prediction of gastrointestinal malignancy: a large-scale, retrospective study
ConclusionsOur findings recommend that plasma TrxR activity could be monitored as an efficient tool for the early diagnosis of gastrointestinal malignancy and as a feasible tool to evaluate the therapeutic effect. (Source: International Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by interval debulking surgery for advanced epithelial ovarian cancer: GOTIC-019 study
ConclusionsNAC followed by IDS did not improve survival. In patients with FIGO stage IIIC, NAC may be associated with a shorter OS. (Source: International Journal of Clinical Oncology)

High RRN3 expression is associated with malignant characteristics and poor prognosis in pancreatic cancer
ConclusionHigh levels of RRN3 expression are associated with poor prognosis and cancer malignancy, such as proliferation, invasion ability, and chemosensitivity in pancreatic cancer. RRN3 targeting with anticancer drugs may be a promising therapeutic strategy to overcome refractory pancreatic cancer. (Source: International Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Robotic systems in interventional oncology: a narrative review of the current status
AbstractInterventional oncology offers minimally invasive treatments for malignant tumors for curative and palliative purposes based on the percutaneous insertion of needles or catheters into the target location under image guidance. Robotic systems have been gaining increasing attention as tools that provide potential advantages for image-guided interventions. Among the robotic systems developed for intervention, those relevant to the oncology field are mainly those for guiding or driving the needles in non-vascular interventional procedures such as biopsy and tumor ablation. Needle-guiding robots support planning the nee...

A single institution ’s experience with minimally invasive surgery for ovarian cancer, and a systematic meta-analysis of the literature
ConclusionsOur experience supports the possibility of conducting MIS for EOC in well-selected patients. Except for spillage, our meta-analysis findings are consistent with previous reports, the majority of which were also retrospective. Ultimately, randomized clinical trials will be needed to authenticate the safety. (Source: International Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Characteristics of anal canal squamous cell carcinoma as an HPV-associated cancer in Japan
AbstractThe definition of the anal canal was revised in the TNM classification (8th edition). The Japanese Society for Cancer of the Colon and Rectum (JSCCR) conducted a retrospective multi-institutional study to clarify the characteristics of anal canal cancer (ACC) in Japan. The diagnoses of 1781 patients treated for ACC were squamous cell carcimoma (SCC; n  = 428; 24.0%), adenosquamous cell carcinoma (n = 7; 0.4%), and adenocarcinoma (n = 1260; 70.7%). Anal carcinoma is associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and is risk factor for anal SCC. Among 40 cases analyzed at Takano Hospital and 47 case...

Etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of human papilloma virus-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma
AbstractClassical oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) caused by alcohol consumption and smoking and HPV-associated OPSCC caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection have different etiologies, incidences, and prognoses. Therefore, the 8th American Joint committee on Cancer (AJCC) and Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) TNM classifications propose distinguishing HPV-associated OPSCC from classical OPSCC and classifying it as an independent disease. Therefore, this review provides an overview of HPV-associated OPSCC from the perspectives of epidemiology, carcinogenesis, development, diagnosis, treatment...
