Long-term outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction and no ischemic changes on electrocardiogram
by Karolina et al. was read with great interest.1 The author of this paper should be commended for their work. Myocardial infarction (MI) patients with no ischemic changes (NIC) have a less favorable prognosis than was previously thought. Their results were comparable to the T-wave inversion (TWI) and STEMI groups. We are aware of the study's caveats, and we acknowledge the possibility that other approaches could strengthen the results. (Source: Heart and Lung)

Treatment and outcome of gram-positive bacteremia in patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation ✰✰✰
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) provides cardiopulmonary support in patients with reversible cardiac or respiratory failure. The use of ECMO has grown rapidly over the past decade.1 Nosocomial infections are a known and common risk in this patient population, with rates reported as high as 58%.2,3 Despite the frequency in this population, there are no published guidelines on evaluation and treatment for patients who develop nosocomial infections on ECMO. This contrasts with other invasive devices such as left ventricular assist devices, where there are standardized workups for suspected infection, as well as rec...

The impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on the prognosis outcomes of patients with percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass grafting: A meta-analysis
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the main types of cardiovascular disease and is characterized by myocardial ischemia as a result of narrowing of the coronary arteries. Incident cases of CAD were reported to be 21.2 million in 20191 and prevalent cases were estimated to be 197 million. Moreover, CAD is among the leading global causes of mortality, with an estimated 9.14 million deaths from CAD worldwide in 2019.2 A report on the global burden of disease showed that the incidence of CAD increased markedly between 1990 and 2017. Share your story
The nursing shortage continues, and we are all feeling the pain of the shortage. Nurses are leaving the profession or retiring early. They are leaving bedside nursing and moving to less stressful jobs with more predictable hours. What does that mean for heart failure patients and heart failure nurses? It means we (the collective body of nurses who work in heart failure as bedside RN's, clinic RN's, Nurse practitioners, educators, researchers, and administrators) need to share out story. We need to share what drew us to the specialty of heart failure. (Source: Heart and Lung)

Impacting heart failure patients lives through missed opportunities
Heart failure (HF) continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Similarly, the health and economic burden of HF in the U.S. continues to grow, with an increasing rate of both HF deaths and hospitalizations.1 It is evident that there are continued opportunities for HF nurses to impact the care and outcomes of this vulnerable patient population. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator in patients with inherited arrhythmia syndromes: A systematic review
The use of the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is successful in preventing sudden cardiac death (SCD), through the delivery of therapy (either antitachycardia pacing (ATP) or electric shock) when a life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia is detected.1 (Source: Heart and Lung)

Mismatch identified in symptom burden profiles in lung transplantation
While thousands of individuals benefit from a successful organ transplantation each year, a far greater number die without receiving a transplant.1 This is due to low referral rates, inequitable access to the wait list, and a persistent shortage of organs. These issues prompted the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) to conduct a review of the inequities in the United States (US) organ transplantation system and identify opportunities for improvement. The NASEM 2022 report2 reveals demonstrable inequities in the patient experience across the transplant trajectory from referral for transplant, ...

The effect of using illustrated materials for communication on the anxiety and comfort of cardiac surgery patients receiving mechanical ventilator support: A randomized controlled trial
The presence of a mechanical ventilator may limit communication between the patient and nurse. Communication difficulties are the leading problems reported by patients in the intensive care unit receiving mechanical ventilation support.1-2 This communication difficulty prevents the patient from reporting his or her needs, thereby affecting the patient's comfort.3 (Source: Heart and Lung)

Evaluating depressive symptoms, BDNF Val66Met, and APOE- ε4 as moderators of response to computerized cognitive training in heart failure
Heart failure (HF) is a serious syndrome that affects approximately 6 million people in the United States1 and 26 million people worldwide.2 It is associated with high mortality rates that range from 15% at 1 year to 53% at 5 years after diagnosis.1 Patients with HF have decreased cardiac output that may lead to inadequate cerebral perfusion,3 cerebral microemboli,4 damage to brain structures with neuronal loss,5 and cognitive dysfunction.6 Cognitive dysfunction occurs in 23% to 80% of patients, depending upon the sample (e.g., HF severity, age) and study characteristics (e.g., control group, screening or neuropsychologica...

Plasma biomarkers and delirium in critically ill patients after cardiac surgery: A prospective observational cohort study
Delirium is characterized by acute deficits in attention, awareness, and cognition, accompanied by the impaired ability to receive, store, and recall information.1,2 Delirium affects 34% of post-coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) ederly patients in intensive care units (ICU).3 The incidence of delirium in mechanical ventilation patients with a high severity of illness has increased to 84%.4 Patients with delirium are more likely to experience extubation failure, prolonged ICU stay, and higher rates of readmission and mortality. Failure of Guidelines and Consensus Statements to Recommend Follow-up for Chronic Cardiovascular Conditions
Follow-up of chronic medical conditions affects subsequent outcomes through adherence and early detection of progression of disease. Examples include adherence to anticoagulation therapy improving stroke rates and survival in atrial fibrillation,1 adherence to guideline-directed medical therapy improving survival in heart failure,2,3 and regular clinic follow-up of asymptomatic aortic stenosis identifying the optimal time for valve replacement.4,5 While close follow-up of chronic cardiac conditions can improve outcomes,6 and lack of follow-up is a barrier to medication adherence,7 we have observed that practitioners in our...
