Plasma biomarkers and delirium in critically ill patients after cardiac surgery: A prospective observational cohort study

Delirium is characterized by acute deficits in attention, awareness, and cognition, accompanied by the impaired ability to receive, store, and recall information.1,2 Delirium affects 34% of post-coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) ederly patients in intensive care units (ICU).3 The incidence of delirium in mechanical ventilation patients with a high severity of illness has increased to 84%.4 Patients with delirium are more likely to experience extubation failure, prolonged ICU stay, and higher rates of readmission and mortality.
