Association between Frailty and 90-Day Outcomes amongst the Chinese Population: A Hospital-Based Multicentre Cohort Study
Conclusions: Frailty is closely related to falls, readmission, and mortality at 30 or 90 days. Early identification and intervention for frailty amongst older inpatients should be conducted to prevent adverse outcomes.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Orthostatic Blood Pressure Recovery Measured Using a Sphygmomanometer Is Not Associated with Physical Performance or Number of Falls in Geriatric Outpatients
Conclusion: The clinical relevance of BP recovery between 1 and 3 min after standing up could not be demonstrated. The results suggest that sphygmomanometer measurements have an inadequate time resolution to record the clinically relevant dynamics of orthostatic BP recovery.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Discriminative Ability for Adverse Outcomes After Hip Fracture Surgery: A Comparison of Three Commonly Used Comorbidity-Based Indices
Conclusions: In comparison with mFI-5 and CCI, mECM so far may be the best comorbidity index combined with the base model for predicting major complications following hip fracture. The base model already achieved good discrimination for all-cause mortality and extended LOS, further addition of risk adjustment indices led to only 1% increase in the amount of variation explained.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

A GPS-Based Framework for Understanding Outdoor Mobility Patterns of Older Adults with Dementia: An Exploratory Study
Conclusion: Based on the proposed framework incorporating 12 GPS-based indicators, we were able to identify several differences in outdoor mobility in PwD compared with cognitively intact CTLs.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Associations of Sleep Quality with Gait Speed and Falls in Older Adults: The Mediating Effect of Muscle Strength and the Gender Difference
Conclusion: Our findings help explain the mechanism underlying the associations of sleep quality with gait speed and falls. Effort to maintain the mobility of the older men should focus on improving both sleep quality and muscle strength.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Correlates of Susceptibility to Scams in Community-Dwelling Older Black Adults
This study aims to identify the factors associated with scam susceptibility in older Black adults. Methods: Participants were 383 older Black adults living in the Chicago metropolitan area (mean age = 78 years and 82% female). A scam susceptibility measure assessed perceptions and behaviors that predispose older adults to fraud and scams. Categories of age-associated factors, including cognition, physical health, psychosocial factors, personality, and behavioral economics, were measured using uniform systematic assessments. For each category separately, measures associated with scam susceptibility were identified via stepwi...

Air Pollution Is Associated with Cognitive Deterioration of Alzheimer ’s Disease
Conclusions: Air pollution is an environment-related risk factor that can be controlled and is associated with cognitive deterioration of AD. This finding could contribute to the implementation of public intervention strategies of AD.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Oral Candidiasis and COVID-19 in Users of Removable Dentures: Is Special Oral Care Needed?
Elderly patients with systemic disorders and immunocompromised patients seem to have a higher risk of developing morbidity from COVID-19.Candida albicans (C. albicans) is a potentially dangerous pathogen for these patients, especially for denture wearers with prosthetic stomatitis who require mechanical ventilation.C. albicans infection, the main candidiasis infection associated with denture wear, can complicate COVID-19 and increase the associated morbidity and mortality. Therefore, early diagnosis ofC. albicans infection in COVID-19 patients is important to establish more effective antifungal treatment methods and prophy...

COVID-19: Clinical Presentation and Prognostic Factors of Severe Disease and Mortality in the Oldest-Old Population: A Cohort Study
Conclusions: The typical presenting symptoms of respiratory infection in COVID-19 are less frequent in the oldest-old population. Male sex and LDH level are associated with severe disease, and the serum sodium level is associated with mortality in this population.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Effects of Mental Imagery on Prospective Memory: A Process Analysis in Individuals with Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment
Discussion: PM deficits in MCI mainly manifest during planning and retaining intentions. Mental imagery was able to promote performance in all but the initiation phase, although a trend for improvement was observed in this phase. The effects of mental imagery may be exerted in the intention retention phase by strengthening the PM cue-action bond, thereby facilitating the probability of intention initiation and bolstering fidelity to the original plan during intention execution.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Multidimensional Prognostic Index Predicts Clinical Outcome and Mortality in Hospitalised Older Patients with Diverticular Disease
Conclusion: MPI predicted mortality in patients with DD and also correlated with the risk of developing DD complications. Studies focussing on possible pathophysiological mechanisms between DD complications and MPI are needed.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

The Survey for Memory, Attention, and Reaction Time (SMART): Development and Validation of a Brief Web-Based Measure of Cognition for Older Adults

Age Predicts Older Adults ’ Driving Self-Regulation but Not Dangerous Driving Behaviors after Controlling for Executive Function
Discussion: After accounting for EF, greater age is associated with higher driving self-regulation but not dangerous driving behaviors in healthy older adults. Future studies should recruit larger samples and collect sensor-measured driving data over a more extended time frame to better determine how and why these self-regulation changes take place.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Pharmacological Treatment of Osteoporosis in Elderly People: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Both antiresorptive and anabolic agents represented potentially important osteoporosis treatments, showing significant effects on reducing vertebral, nonvertebral, or hip fracture risk, and were well-tolerated by elderly patients. Even in the elderly, maybe it is not too late to alter the course of the disease.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

A Wrist-Worn Sensor-Derived Frailty Index Based on an Upper-Extremity Functional Test in Predicting Functional Mobility in Older Adults
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the UEFI can be performed with a wrist-worn sensor and has been validated with other established measures of preoperative frailty. The UEFI can be applied in a wide variety of patients, regardless of mobility limitations, in an outpatient setting.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)
