Age, GFR and ejection fraction score as a good predictor of prognosis in elderly patients with nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy
Introduction: Nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (NIDCM) is a heterogeneous disease, and patients still have high risk of sudden cardiac death even after receiving treatment. The Selvester QRS score and the ESTIMATED score reported as predictors contain many variables and are complex to calculate. There is a need for a simple predictive score to accurately assess prognosis in clinical practice. Methods: A total of 953 elderly patients (age ≥60 years) diagnosed with NIDCM were enrolled from January 2010 to December 2019. In-hospital and long-term outcomes were studied. Results: Univariate logistic regression analysis sho...

Can Informal Caregiving be Perceived as Rejuvenating? Changes in Perceptions of Ageing at Onset and End of Informal Caregiving during Different Stages of Life
Conclusion: The perceptions of ageing improved with the onset and worsened with end of caregiving – but only among oldest old individuals. Thus, informal caregiving seems to be a significant predictor for perceptions of ageing in old age.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Association of Torquetenovirus viremia with physical frailty and cognitive impairment in three independent European cohorts
The objective of this study was to analyze the relation between TTV viremia, physical frailty and cognitive impairment Methods: TTV viremia was measured in 1131 nonfrail, 45 physically frail, and 113 cognitively impaired older adults recruited in the MARK-AGE study (overall mean age 64.7 ±5.9 years), then the results were checked in two other independent cohorts from Spain and Portugal, including 126 frail, 252 prefrail and 141 nonfrail individuals (overall mean age: 77.5±8.3 years). Results: TTV viremia ≥4log was associated with physical frailty (OR: 4.69; 95% CI: 2.06-10.67, p (Source: Gerontology)

Association of multi-dimensional factors with Accelerating Age and constructing a Healthy Lifestyle Index: Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study
Conclusions Male sex, smoking, alcohol use, physi cal inactivity, greater waist circumference and BMI were associated with higher AA by 0.09 to 2.75 years, suggesting that adopting a healthy lifestyle may alleviate process of phenotypic ageing. (Source: Gerontology)

Hearing loss and cognitive function in early old age: comparing subjective and objective hearing measures
Conclusion: In a population-based sample of 70-year-old persons without dementia, poorer hearing was associated with poo rer global and domain-specific cognitive function, but only when hearing function was measured objectively and not when self-reported. The speech-in-noise measure showed the strongest association. This highlights the importance of including standardized hearing tests and controlling for hearing stat us in epidemiological geriatric research. More research is needed on the role that hearing aid use plays in relation to age-related cognitive declines. (Source: Gerontology)

Physical Multimorbidity and Sarcopenia among Adults Aged ≥65 Years in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Conclusions: In this large sample of older adults from LMICs, physical multimorbidity was significantly associated with sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia. Our study results tentatively suggest that targeting those with multimorbidity may aid in the prevention of sarcopenia, pending future longitudinal research.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Profiles of Successful Aging and Their Association with All-Cause Mortality Risk among the Oldest-Old Chinese in Singapore
Discussion: SA in the oldest-old could take different profiles based on objective and subjective indicators, and these profiles have implications for mortality risk. Individuals with good subjective indicators have advantage in survival despite poor objective indicators.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Impact of the Introduction of a Public Taxi Ride in Rural South Korea on Levels of Healthcare Utilization among Elderly Patients with Diabetes
Conclusion: The results of this study confirm a relationship between the introduction of public taxi transportation services and increased healthcare utilization in older patients with diabetes in rural areas. These findings are noteworthy considering the importance of continuous care in managing chronic diseases.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Associations between Hospitalization and Device-Assessed Physical Activity in a Representative Sample of Older Adults
Conclusions: This study suggests that hospital admission and the number of times admitted, but not accumulated length of stay, may curb physical activity levels of older adults. Public health strategies to promote successful aging should target post-hospitalization physical activity.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Cognitive Aging in Same- and Different-Sex Relationships: Comparing Age of Diagnosis and Rate of Cognitive Decline in the Health and Retirement Study
Conclusion: Our findings support theories suggesting that marginalization and stigma cause premature cognitive impairment. Findings also suggest that higher education might mitigate the adverse effects of sexuality-minority status on cognitive aging. Results do not support these theories ’ claims of more rapid cognitive decline; the lower slopes of cognitive decline with time are compatible with the possibility of slower rates of decline for aging individuals in SSRs.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Comparative Safety and Effectiveness of Direct Oral Anticoagulants and Warfarin during Chemotherapy in Cancer Patients with Venous Thromboembolism Aged 75 Years or Older :A Nationwide Inpatient Database Study
Conclusion Our findings suggest that DOACs may be more effective than warfarin in terms of VTE recurrence requiring hospitalization, and that these medications may be equivalent in terms of safety. (Source: Gerontology)

High Fragmented Physical Activity as an Early Risk Indicator of Frailty and Mortality in Adults Aged 50 Years and Over
Conclusions: Our results suggest that a high fragmented physical activity pattern is associated with frailty and risk of mortality in adults and older adults. This association was independent of total volume of physical activity and time spent sedentary.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Frailty: pathophysiology, theoretical and operational definition(s), impact, prevalence, management and prevention, in an increasingly economically developed and ageing world
The world ’s population is ageing, and most older adults experience a later life burdened with disease and disability. Frailty is a multi-dimensional and dynamic condition characterised by declines in reserve and function across multiple physiologic systems, such that the ability to cope with every day or a cute stressors becomes compromised. It is projected to become one of the most serious public health challenges economically developed societies will face in the coming century. This review provides a comprehensive overview of frailty, exploring its pathophysiology, theoretical and operational defini tion(s), impact, p...

At Crossroads in a Virtual City: Effect of Spatial Disorientation on Gait Variability and Psychophysiological Response among Healthy Older Adults
Conclusion: The results provide evidence for the impact of spatial disorientation on changes in gait pattern and psychophysiological response among older adults during wayfinding. Location also had implications for the effect of disorientation on gait and cognitive effort. This gives further insight into the substrates of real-world navigation challenges among older adults, with an emphasis on viable features for designing situation-adaptive interventional devices aiding independent mobility.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

The Potential of Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation to Alleviate Dual-Task Gait Costs in Older Adults: Insights from a Double-Blinded Pilot Study
Conclusions: The positive effects of tACS on dual-task gait speed and step length were roughly similar to those seen with tDCS. These results suggest that tACS affects the fronto-parietal network and, similar to tDCS, tACS may improve dual-tasking. Nonetheless, to achieve larger benefits and differentiate the effects of tACS and tDCS on brain function and dual-task walking in older adults, other stimulation montages and protocols should be tested.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)
