Influenza A-Associated In-Hospital Mortality in Very Older People: Does Inflammation Also Play a Role?
Conclusions: Patients aged 85 and older with influenza A virus infection presented a higher in-hospital mortality than younger subjects. CRP and ferritin levels were higher in the oldest old who died, suggesting that inflammation could play a key role in the outcome of this subset of patients.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Heterogeneity of Frailty Trajectories and Associated Factors in the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936
Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate heterogeneity in frailty trajectories over 12 years in individuals aged 70 years at baseline. Membership of higher frailty trajectory groupings was associated with lower social class, less education, and lower childhood cognitive ability, indicating the potential for future interventions to target individuals who are at the greatest risk of belonging to the high frailty trajectory. Future research is required to continue this line of inquiry by exploring other risk and protective factors, and importantly, to assess whether it is possible to realign an individual ’s membership to a les...

Higher Activity and Quality of Life Correlates with Swallowing Function in Older Adults with Low Activities of Daily Living
Conclusion: The swallowing function of older adults with low ADL was related to their QOL and activities, such as time spent away from bed and home. Thus, in rehabilitation programs for swallowing function in older adults, not only functional but also psychological approaches may prove effective.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Global Incidence, Progression, and Risk Factors of Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Projection of Disease Statistics in 30 Years: A Modeling Study
Conclusion: The prediction the number of new cases of AMD is not equal across the globe. Our findings indicate the need for more rigorous control and prevention measures in AMD focus on its risk factors for early intervention. The epidemiological estimates reported in this study could inform to identify effective strategies for preventing AMD worldwide.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Non-Contact Measurement of Heart Rate Variability in Frail Geriatric Patients: Response to Early Geriatric Rehabilitation and Comparison with Healthy Old Community-Dwelling Individuals – A Pilot Study
Conclusion: Early geriatric rehabilitation improves the functional state, which is associated with an increased HRV. PPGI is capable of detecting HRV changes/trends in that age group. While the tracking of intra-individual HRV changes is also possible, its reliability needs improvement. Nevertheless, the capabilities demonstrated in our study and the non-contact measurement principle of PPGI emphasize its potential for application in geriatric medicine.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Hospital-Acquired Acute Kidney Injury in Older Patients: Clinical Characteristics and Drug Analysis
Conclusion: AKI incidence was high among hospitalized older patients. Older patients with HA-AKI had worse in-hospital outcomes and higher resource utilization. Nephrotoxic drug exposure and HA-AKI incidence were associated with an increased in-hospital mortality risk.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Sex Differences in Characteristics Associated with Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use and Associations with Functional Capacity in Older Participants of the Berlin Aging Study II
Conclusion: We found similarities, but also differences between men and women as to the associations between PIM use and participants ’ characteristics and functional capacity assessments. The association of lower education with PIM use may suggest that physicians’ prescribing behavior is modified by patient education, a relationship that could evolve from more critical attitudes of educated patients towards medication use. We conclude that sex differences in associations of PIM use with functional capacities might be partly attributable to sex differences in drug classes used, but not with regard to anticholinergics, ...

Production Improves Visual and Auditory Text Memory in Younger and Older Adults
Discussion: Since older adults are increasingly engage in learning, it is important to develop high-quality structured learning programs for this population. The current results demonstrate the preserved ability of older adults to successfully memorize texts and may guide planning of such programs. Specifically, since learning via the auditory modality yields superior performance for learners across age-groups, it may be recommended for text learning. Because older adults showed larger benefits from active production of the study material, it may be used to better remember educationally relevant material.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

< b > < i > CD33 < /i > < /b > mRNA Has Elevated Expression Levels in the Leukocytes of Peripheral Blood in Patients with Late-Onset Alzheimer ’s Disease
Conclusions: rs3865444, located upstream of the 5 ′CD33 coding region, might positively influence CD33 mRNAs expression in leukocytes of LOAD versus healthy people. This is likely to happen through interfering rs3865444 (C) with the functional activity of several other transcription factors given that rs3865444 is in linkage disequilibrium with o ther functional polymorphisms in this coding region according to an in silico study. We propose that CD33 mRNAs elevation in peripheral immune cells – as a potential biomarker in LOAD – is related to peripheral immune system impairment.Gerontology (Source: Gerontology)

Difficulties in the Use of Everyday Technology among Older Adults with Subjective Memory Complaint and Cognitive Decline

Serum Amino Acids Patterns and 4-Year Sarcopenia Risk in Community-Dwelling Chinese Older Adults
Conclusions: In community-dwelling Chinese older adults, serum AAs patterns characterized by high BCAAs and nonessential AAs (arginine, taurine, and serine) were associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia in women.
