Avoiding the use of halogenated anesthetic agents for uterine relaxation in open mid-gestation fetal surgery: A case report
Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, these are the first reports of open fetal surgery being performed without the use of halogenated anesthetic agents. This has potential short- and long-term benefits for the fetus, particularly as more complex and longer duration minimally invasive procedures are developed. (Source: Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy)

sFlt-1/PlGF ratio at 24 weeks gestation in twin pregnancies as a predictor of preeclampsia or fetal growth restriction
Objective: to elucidate if sFlt-1/PlGF ratio at 24 weeks in twin pregnancies could be useful to select patients who subsequently develop diseases related to placental dysfunction, such as preeclampsia or fetal growth restriction (FGR). Methods: prospective study among all twin pregnancies followed up at a tertiary Hospital. The sFlt-1/PlGF ratio was determined at 24 weeks. Results: a total of 108 patients with a twin gestation were included. Pregnant women who developed preeclampsia and/or FGR displayed a significantly higher sFlt-1/PlGF ratio at 24 weeks, compared to those who did not develop these diseases (20.3 vs 4.3...

Methodological quality of fetal brain structure charts for screening examination and targeted neurosonography: a systematic review
Introduction: The methodological quality of fetal brain charts has not been critically appraised yet. Material and methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and the Web of Science databases were searched electronically up to December 31, 2020. The primary outcome was to evaluate the methodology of the studies assessing the growth of fetal brain structures throughout gestation. A list of 28 methodological quality criteria divided into three domains according to “study design”, “statistical and reporting methods”, and “specific relevant neurosonography aspects” was developed in order to assess the methodological appropri...

Prenatal diagnosis of a liver mass by Tru-Cut ® biopsy
A 32 year old, gravida 2 para 1 at 33 week ’s gestation, was referred for a third opinion regarding a large fetal liver mass. The couple sought approval for a termination of pregnancy, following a differential diagnosis of hepatoblastoma. A specialised ultrasound (US) and fetal magnetic resonance imaging (f-MRI) were repeated in our unit a nd the results were consistent with a diagnosis of haemangioma. A Tru-Cut® (Meritmedical, Utah, USA) liver biopsy was performed confirming a benign haemangioma and the couple opted to continue with the pregnancy. (Source: Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy)

Proximate Cord Insertion in Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome: Case Series and PRISMA compliant Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Objective: We aimed to investigate the prevalence and clinical outcomes of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) with proximate cord insertions. Methods: Retrospective cohort study of TTTS cases managed at single fetal center between 2012 and 2020. Presence of proximate cord insertions defined as a distance of equal or less than four centimeters between placental cord insertions that was recorded based on sonographic and fetoscopic examinations. Clinical outcomes were investigated compared to unmatched cohort and to 1:2 matched controls using pre-operative variables including: Quintero staging, selective fetal growth r...

The overlooked impact of lower uterine segment contractions on second trimester cervical assessment
Introduction: Asymptomatic contractions in the lower uterine segment (LUS) may affect uterocervical angle and cervical length; however, this has never been investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of LUS contractions on uterocervical angle, cervical length and LUS thickness. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective, observational, single-cohort study conducted on 102 asymptomatic singleton pregnancies between 19.0 and 22.6 weeks of gestation. Uterocervical angle and cervical length were measured by transvaginal ultrasound at two different time points with an interval of at least 20 ...

Uniform international method to measure cervical length; are we there yet?
Introduction: Cervical length is an important predictor of spontaneous preterm birth. So far, the best way to measure cervical length has not been established. We aimed to compare the incidence of short cervical length between three methods of cervical length measurement with and without inclusion of cervico-isthmic complex (CIC) (six methods in total) and to determine the positive predictive value for spontaneous preterm birth. Material and methods: We performed a prospective single center cohort study in women with a singleton pregnancy between August 2014 and December 2018. During the routine fetal anomaly scan (18-22 ...

Contingent cfDNA Screening Implementation: Increasing Diagnostic Accuracy and Reducing Invasive Testing – 6 Years’ Results in a Single Center
This study aims to compare the results achieved in Salamanca University Hospital during the first 3 years of contingent screening (2018 –2020) with those of the previous 3 years (2015–2017) to assess the changes in the trisomy detection rate and the number of invasive tests. Methods: A total of 9,903 singleton pregnancies without malformations nor nuchal translucency #x3e;p99 were included. 5,165 patients underwent combined screening and 4,738 had contingent screening based on the combined test risk. In the combined test group, women were offered an invasive test if the risk was ≥1:270, while risks under 1:270 were co...
