Dietary weight loss intervention provides improvement of gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms —A randomized clinical trial
SummaryTo evaluate the effect of dietary interventions aimed at weight loss in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms and general health-related quality of life (HRQL) in overweight and obese patients. A population of GERD patients were randomized into two groups: the intervention group received individualized dietary counselling on scheduled appointments throughout 6  months of follow-up (n = 31) and the control group received only informative dietary guidelines on baseline (n = 31). Anthropometric data were monthly collected, and the HRQL score for GERD (GERD-HRQL) and the Health Survey (SF-36) questionnair...

Response to school ‐based interventions for overweight and obesity: A systematic scoping review
The objective of this study was to comprehensively review school-based interventions that reported study results in terms of response and identify definitions of response used. A scoping review was conducted using a systematic search of five scientific databases from 2009 to 2021. Inclusion criteria included randomized controlled trial design, school-based setting, weight-based outcomes (e.g., BMI, BMI z-score), weight-based outcomes analysed among youth with overweight/obesity, a study conducted in a developed country and publication in English. A total of 26 reports representing 25 unique studies were included. Overall, ...

Bacteria with potential: Improving outcomes through probiotic use following Roux ‐en‐Y gastric bypass
SummaryObesity impairs the gastrointestinal microbiome (GM) and may promote micronutrient deficiencies. Bariatric surgery (BS), the most efficacious treatment for severe obesity, produces sustained weight loss and improvements in obesity-related comorbidities, but might not fully restore microbial balance. Moreover, BS may result in deleterious consequences that affect weight loss and further intensify post-operative micronutrient deficiencies. To date, the use of probiotics appears to be associated with greater weight loss in bariatric patients, improved vitamin synthesis and availability, and decreased instances of small...

Patients' perceptions of the mechanisms underlying alcohol use problems after bariatric surgery: A qualitative systematic review
The objective of this review was to synthesize findings of qualitative studies on patients' perceptions of the mechanisms leading to problematic alcohol consumption after bariatric surgery. This review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for systematic review of qualitative evidence. A comprehensive search strategy was performed in MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Scopus and Google Scholar. Study selection, data extraction and critical appraisal of included studies were undertaken by two independent reviewers. Confidence in review findings was assessed using the ConQual approach. Four studies were included in this review an...

Pre ‐pregnancy weight excess and body mass index: Analysis of three generations Brazilian birth cohort
SummaryTo evaluate the relationship between the grandmother's maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) (first generation —G1), the BMI of the female members of the birth cohort of Pelotas/RS, Brazil, 1993 (second generation—G2) and the children of the cohort members (third generation—G3). a longitudinal study using data from the 1993 Pelotas/RS cohort. The maternal pre-pregnancy BMI of the mothers of the members (first generation—G1) was self-reported, and of the participants in the cohort (second generation—G2) was collected using weight and height in follow-ups prior to 22 years of age. Children from the ...

Interventions for reducing weight bias in healthcare providers: An interprofessional systematic review and meta ‐analysis
SummaryWeight bias is prevalent in many healthcare disciplines and negatively impacts the quality of care for patients with obesity. This warrants interventions to reduce weight bias shown by providers to improve care for individuals with obesity. However, past reviews have identified only marginal success in improving the attitudes and beliefs of healthcare providers about individuals with obesity. This systematic review and meta-analysis identifies and synthesizes recent peer-reviewed intervention studies aimed at reducing weight bias in healthcare students and professionals. The databases Embase, Cumulative Index to Nur...

Anti ‐fat attitudes among Spanish general population: Psychometric properties of the anti‐fat attitudes scale
SummaryWeight discrimination is one of the worst forms of prejudice and is deeply rooted in society. The aim of this study was to adapt the anti-fat attitudes scale (AFA) to the Spanish general population. The sample consisted of 1248 participants from the Spanish community population. They were recruited through the internet and participated voluntarily. Women (77.8%) were more predominant than men. Regarding body weight categories, 5.3% were underweight, 43.5% were normal-weight, 24.9% were overweight and 26.3% had obesity. A cross-validation method with an exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the three...

The prevalence of comorbidities in Danish patients with obesity – A Danish register‐based study based on data from 2002 to 2018
SummaryWe used the Danish National Health Registers to conduct a study on the prevalence of obesity-related comorbidities in Danish citizens who have been diagnosed with obesity at a Danish hospital. This was a retrospective observational study with a population comprising all Danish citizens ( ≥18 years) who have been registered with a specific obesity class diagnosis in the Danish National Patient Register between 2002 and 2018. A total of 86 980 persons with hospital-diagnosed obesity were included in the study population. To investigate how the risk of having comorbidities varies with the degree of obesity, we ap...

Are individual or group interventions more effective for long ‐term weight loss in adults with obesity? A systematic review
SummaryGuidelines recommend individual and group interventions for weight loss, based on preference. Our 2009 systematic review compared long-term effectiveness of individual or group approaches to the same intervention, but there are new randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of high-quality data. We updated and expanded our previous systematic review. We searched Medline and Embase from 1966 to May 2021, and a clinical trial register from 1966 to 2017. Review Manager (5.4.1) was used to conduct meta-analysis. Ten RCTs were included. The primary outcome, mean weight change at final follow-up, was −1.33 kg (95% confidence...

Football fans' emotional attachment to their clubs as a predictor of weight loss in a prevention programme for men with obesity
SummaryData about which factors in lifestyle interventions facilitate weight loss (WL) success in men is still scarce. The Football Fans in Training (FFIT) programme in Germany attracts men with overweight and facilitates meaningful weight reduction. The goal of this study was to evaluate the possible impact of the fans' emotional attachment to their favourite football clubs on achieving at least 5% WL among the male-only participants. All 791 FFIT intervention participants of 2017 and 2018 were included in the study. We performed two separate logistic regression analyses: (a) baseline values of several participant charact...
