COVID ‐19: Impact of obesity and diabetes on disease severity
This study investigated the potential associations of obesity and diabetes with COVID‐19 severe outcomes, assessed as ICU admittance. Medical hi story, demographic and patient characteristics of a retrospective cohort (1158 patients) hospitalized with COVID‐19 were analysed at a single centre in Kuwait. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to explore the associations between different variables and ICU admittance. Of 1158 ho spitalized patients, 271 had diabetes, 236 had hypertension and 104 required admittance into the ICU. From patients with available measurements, 157 had body mass index (BMI) ≥25...

Obesity and COVID ‐19: A jigsaw puzzle with still missing pieces
We present potential mechanisms, which might partly explain why patients with obesity are more prone to suffer fr om respiratory infections in the context of COVID‐19. Better understanding of these pathways could eventually guide management strategies and therapies for COVID‐19 in the future. (Source: Clinical Obesity)

Gender differences in response to an opportunistic brief intervention for obesity in primary care: Data from the BWeL trial
SummaryWeight loss programmes appeal mainly to women, prompting calls for gender ‐specific programmes. In the United Kingdom, general practitioners (GPs) refer nine times as many women as men to community weight loss programmes. GPs endorsement and offering programmes systematically could reduce this imbalance. In this trial, consecutively attending patients in primary care wi th obesity were invited and 1882 were enrolled and randomized to one of two opportunistic 30‐second interventions to support weight loss given by GPs in consultations unrelated to weight. In the support arm, clinicians endorsed and offered referr...

Can a brief assessment of social support predict outcomes after bariatric surgery?
SummarySocial support is important to optimize bariatric surgery outcomes, but limited tools exist for brief and effective assessment preoperatively. The aims of the study were to determine the extent to which two ratings of social support can predict bariatric surgery outcomes, and to examine any associations between these two methods. In this retrospective study, patients were included for whom the Cleveland clinic behavioral rating system (CCBRS) and Flanagan quality of life scale (FQoLS) scores were obtained as part of their preoperative psychosocial evaluation. They were followed up for 6 to 24  months after bariatri...

Obesity and activity patterns before and during COVID ‐19 lockdown among youths in China
This study aim to assess changes in obesity and activity patterns among youths in China during the COVID ‐19 lockdown. We used the COVID‐19 Impact on lifestyle change survey (COINLICS), a national retrospective survey distributed via social media platforms in early May 2020 where more than 10 000 youth participants in China have voluntarily reported their basic sociodemographic information, weigh t status, and routine lifestyles in the months before and during COVID‐19 lockdown. The extended IOTF and WHO standards were used to define overweight and obesity of the participants. We used paired t‐tests or χ2 tests ...

Clinical approaches to minimize iatrogenic weight gain in children and adolescents
SummaryClinical providers may underestimate the role of management of diseases that can occur with obesity, termed co ‐morbid conditions, distinct from disease that arise as a result of obesity, co‐morbidities. Many of these conditions are associated with iatrogenic weight gain, and can interfere with weight loss outcomes in children and adolescents with obesity. Management of co‐morbid conditions, and though tful selection of medications associated with weight neutrality or weight loss may increase the effectiveness of obesity treatment strategies. The aim of this commentary is to summarize the literature and discus...

More than a “monstrous obesity”! Time to overcome the “anti‐fat” bias
SummaryA 54 ‐years‐old woman complained of unintentional important body weight gain associated with abdominal bloating. For this reason, she had consulted many different diet and nutritional professionals, general practitioners and a gastroenterology specialist, but no one went beyond a simple diagnosis of “monstrous obesity”. At our hospital division, based on physical examination, a computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen and pelvis was performed. It showed a voluminous intraperitoneal mass occupying the most part of the abdomen. The patient underwent laparotomy with resection of the abdomino‐ pelvic mass, orig...

Female adolescents with overweight and obesity share their perspectives on the clinical setting and weight management
SummaryThe clinical setting remains a strategic environment for early assessment, identification and treatment of adolescents with obesity. Yet, healthcare providers' (HCPs) efforts have been unsuccessful in improving physical activity, nutritional intake or body mass index in adolescents with obesity. Obesity is a chronic condition that influences how patients interact with HCPs and experience ambulatory healthcare appointments. However, it is unknown how female adolescents with obesity perceive the clinical setting, especially regarding weight management. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of female...

Development of the impact of weight on daily activities questionnaire: A patient ‐reported outcome measure
SummaryWhile patient ‐reported outcome measures are available to evaluate health‐related quality of life and functioning in obesity, existing measures do not evaluate the impact of excess weight and weight loss on the ability to perform regularly occurring daily activities. Three iterative sets of qualitative interv iews were conducted in two countries (United States, n = 23; United Kingdom, n = 23) with individuals with body mass index ≥30 kg/m2 to inform development of the Impact of Weight on Daily Activities Questionnaire (IWDAQ) for use in clinical trials to evaluate daily activity limitations associated with e...

Association of household food insecurity and childhood weight status in a low ‐income population
SummaryOne in seven US households with children are food insecure. The health effects of household food insecurity (HFI) are well documented, but its association with childhood weight status remains unclear. We aimed to assess this association and to describe correlates of HFI in children. We conducted a cross ‐sectional study of 3019 low‐income children aged 2 to 17 years. Data were extracted via chart review. HFI was assessed using the hunger vital sign screener. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated from documented clinical measurements. We used adjusted linear and logistic regression to assess th e association of ...

“I am the embodiment of an anorexic patient's worst fear”: Severe obesity and binge eating disorder on a restrictive eating disorder ward
We describe a case of an adolescent living with severe, complex obesity and binge eating disorder, presenting in a mental health crisis, admitted to an in ‐patient unit primarily for patients being treated for restrictive eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa. This case report describes multiple challenges that arose in admitting such a patient on a ward specializing in the treatment of restrictive eating disorders and highlights the need for eq uitable and more accessible care for patients living with all types of eating disorders.
