The effect of overweight/obesity on diastolic function in children and adolescents: A meta ‐analysis
SummaryLeft ventricular diastolic function (LVDF) is an important marker of early cardiovascular remodelling, which has not been well summarized in young people with overweight/obesity. Weighted, random-effects regression was used to determine the strength of associations of both body mass index (BMI) and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) with LVDF measures, adjusting for age and sex. Six databases were searched after PROSPERO registration (CRD42020177470) from inception to July 2020 for studies that compared LVDF between overweight/obesity and control groups aged ≤24 years, yielding 70 studi...

Weight bias reduction among first ‐year medical students: A quasi‐randomized, controlled trial
This study aimed to decrease weight bias in medical students via a one-session, curriculum-based intervention founded on the elaboration likelihood model (ELM). First-year medical students (N = 101) were quasi-randomly assigned to a group-based experimental or education-based control intervention. Data collected included measures of implicit and explicit weight bias and empathy (pre-intervention and up to 2 days post-intervention), and thoughts regarding weight bias (collected at th e end of the intervention). Social desirability was identified as an important covariate. After controlling for social desirability, the i...

The impact of COVID ‐19 on obesity services across Europe: A physician survey
This study aimed to determine the impact of COVID-19 on the provision of obesity services across 10 European countries via a survey of physicians (n  = 102) specializing in treating persons with obesity (PwO). In total, 62–95 out of 102 physicians reported that COVID-19 affected obesity-related services, with cancellations/suspensions ranging from 50% to 100% across the 10 countries. Approximately 75% of cancellations/suspensions were provid er- rather than patient-initiated. A median increase of 20%–25% in waiting times was reported for most services across the countries. When services resume, 87 out of 100 physicia...

Distribution of comorbidities as primary diagnoses by obesity class among patients in a large US paediatric healthcare system
SummaryThere is little documentation of the distribution of specific health conditions across obesity classes (I, II, III), especially for paediatric populations who are seen for routine care in large United States US healthcare systems. The aim of this study was to assess the odds of presenting ≥2 obesity-related comorbidities as well as assess the overall distribution of these co-morbidities in children by class I/II/III obesity status controlling for key sociodemographic characteristics. This retrospective (2015–2019) electronic health record review analysed 49 276 patients from th e Children's Health System of Te...

Affordability and features of home scales for self ‐weighing
SummarySelf-weighing is an evidence-based weight management strategy, which requires patients to have a home scale. For clinicians to effectively counsel patients on self-weighing, they should be aware of the costs and features available in typical home scales. Our objective was to describe the cost and features of the top bathroom scales available online. We performed content analysis of top 100 scales listed on a popular online retailer. Two coders independently extracted price and scale features (i.e., digital connectivity, body mass index [BMI] calculation, maximum weight accommodated). We usedt-tests and ANOVA, as app...

Understanding bariatric patients' experiences of self ‐management post‐surgery: A qualitative study
SummaryAlthough most bariatric patients achieve significant weight loss and improvements in both physical and mental health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the short-term, there is wide variability in weight and long-term HRQoL outcomes. The role of bariatric patients' self-management style in explaining variability in long-term outcomes is unclear. This qualitative study examined bariatric patients' self-management experiences after bariatric surgery in relation to long-term outcomes. A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured individual interviews with post-surgery patients (n  = 23) at a Canadian baria...

A clinical model to predict fibrosis on liver biopsy in paediatric subjects with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
This study aimed to identify non-invasive parameters to predict advanced NAFLD and fibrosis. We conducted a single-center, retrospective 10-year analysis of 640 paediatric patients who underwent liver biopsy. 55 patients, age 3 –21 years, had biopsy-confirmed NAFLD. We assessed primary outcomes, NAFLD activity score (NAS) and fibrosis scores, against non-invasive parameters by linear regression, by using binary cutoff values, and by a multivariate logistic regression fibrosis prediction model. NAS correlated with plate lets and female sex. Fibrosis scores correlated with platelet counts, gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT...

Preferences and emotional response to weight ‐related terminology used by healthcare professionals to describe body weight in people living with overweight and obesity
This study explored the preferences and emotional responses of terms used by HCPs to describe body weight and of parents to describe their children's weight. A total of 2911 adults completed an online cross-sectional survey, with 1693 living with overweight or obesity (mean age 49.2  years [SD 12.5], female (96%), median body mass index (BMI) 31.4 kg/m2 [28.1, 36.5]). The survey explored preferences of 22 weight-related terms using a 5-point Likert scale and their emotional response to these terms (using 7-core emotions). Parents also indicated preferences and emotional responses to terms used to describe their children...

Views of Black women patients with obesity on desired and undesired weight ‐focused clinical encounters
This study investigated the views of Black women with overweight and obesity treated in a primary care setting regarding desired and undesired verbal and non-verbal behaviours by providers in provider-patient clinical encounters focused on losing weight, maintaining weight loss, and/or obesity. Two focus groups and an individual interview (n  = 15) were conducted. Qualitative data analysis yielded five distinct themes, with 11 codes (listed in parenthesis): (a) desired weight-focused discussions (codes: Discussing weight loss with patients and discussing weight-loss maintenance with patients), (b) desired weight-focused ...

People with weight ‐related long‐term conditions want support from GPs: A qualitative interview study
SummaryTwo-thirds of UK adults do not have an up-to-date weight record in primary care. Some studies suggest that doctors do not raise the topic of weight management for fear of causing embarrassment or offence, or are doubtful whether people will make changes. However, for people with weight-related long-term conditions, conversations with general practitioners (GPs) can be crucial. Our study explores how people with long-term conditions associated with overweight recall and interpret conversations about weight in British primary care. An experienced qualitative researcher interviewed 41 people aged<42 years with long...

Emotional eating as predictor of weight loss 2  years after Roux‐en‐Y gastric bypass
SummaryThere has been little agreement on the predictive value of emotional eating on weight loss outcomes after bariatric surgery. The aim of this study was to examine the predictive value of preoperative emotional eating, in response to clearly labelled emotions and diffuse emotions, on excess weight loss (EWL) and total weight loss (TWL) 2  years after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). All participants included in this retrospective cohort study were screened for RYGB surgery by a multidisciplinary team. The level of emotional eating was derived from the Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (DEBQ); the level of psychol...

A retrospective case ‐control cohort analysis of comorbidity and health expenditure in hospitalized adults diagnosed with obesity utilizing ICD‐10 diagnostic coding
SummaryThe cost and comorbidity of obesity in hospitalized inpatients, is less known. A retrospective study of patients presenting to a large district hospital in Western Sydney (April 2016-February 2017) using clinical, pathological as well as diagnostic coding data for obesity as per ICD-10. Of 43  212 consecutive hospital presentations, 390 had an obesity-coded diagnosis (Ob, 0.90%), of which 244 were gender and age-matched to a non-obesity coded cohort (NOb). Weight and BMI were higher in the Ob vs NOb group (126 ± 37 vs 82 ± 25 kg; BMI 46 ± 12 vs 29 ± 8 kg/m2,P <  .001) with a medical re...

Current preoperative strategies applied in the Dutch bariatric centers: A national survey
This study aimed to identify current weight loss goals prior to bariatric surgery, as well as aimed to explore preoperative strategies related to diet, nutritional supplements and physical activity. An online survey was distributed among bariatric surgeons and dietitians in all 18 Dutch bariatric centers. This survey included the following four domains: weight loss, diet, nutritional supplements and physical activity. For the analyses one answer per center was used, either the most common answer or the answer given by the most expert responder. All 18 centers reported at least one response. Preoperative weight loss was req...
