A small change approach on adiposity, lean mass and bone mineral density in adults with overweight and obesity: A randomized controlled trial
SummaryWe sought to determine whether small changes in physical activity and diet could prevent adverse changes in body composition over 2  years in adults with overweight and obesity. Previously inactive adults (N = 289) were included in a secondary analysis of data derived from a 3-year, single-centre, two-arm, longitudinal randomized controlled trial. Participants were randomized to a small change approach (N = 144, body mass index: 32.4 ± 4.2 [mean ± standard deviation], age: 52.3 ±. 10.6 years) or usual care (N = 145, body mass index: 32.4 ± 4.2, age: 53.1 ± 10.6 years). Small chang...

The effect of exercise training level on arterial stiffness after clinically significant weight loss
SummaryArterial stiffness is improved by weight loss. However, no data exist on the impact of aerobic exercise levels on arterial stiffness during weight maintenance. Adults who  were  overweight or with obesity (N = 39) participated in a 10-week weight loss program. Participants who achieved ≥7% weight loss were randomized to aerobic training at the minimum physical activity guidelines (PA-REC, 550 MET min/week) or weight maintenance guidelines (WM-REC, 970 MET min/week) for 18 additional weeks. Arteria l stiffness (carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity [cfPWV], augmentation index normalized for 75 beats/min [AIX...

Differentiation of lipoedema from bilateral lower limb lymphoedema by imaging assessment of indocyanine green lymphography
This study aimed to assess the presence or absence of lymphoedema in the lower limbs of women with lipoedema using indocyanine green (ICG) lymphography. A cross-sectional retrospective study was undertaken in women with a clinical diagnosis of lipoedema whose lower limbs were examined with ICG lymphography. MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) ICG staging was used to determine lymphoedema presence and severity. Patient characteristics, ICG lymphography findings, Stemmer sign, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, limb volume and bioimpedance spectroscopy measures were recorded. Forty women with lipoedema underwent ICG lymphogr...

High free leptin index as the risk factor for childhood obesity in Indonesia: A case –control study
This study aims to investigate the association between leptin, sOB-R, and FLI with measurements to diagnose obesity in children, such as BMI, waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). We conducted a case –control study in 10 elementary schools in Medan, Indonesia. The case group was children with obesity, while the control group was children with normal BMI. Leptin and sOB-R levels were measured from all the subjects using the ELISA method. Logistic regression analysis was employed to determine wh ich factors were predictor variables of obesity. A total of 202 children between 6 and 12 years old were recrui...

Clinical characteristics of patients undergoing primary bariatric surgery in the United Kingdom based on the National Bariatric Surgery Registry
This study aimed to describe the profile of patients having primary bariatric surgery in the National Health Service (NHS) or by self-pay, and associated operations performed for both pathways. The National Bariatric Surgery Registry dataset for 5  years between January 2015 and December 2019 was used. 34 580 patients underwent primary bariatric surgery, of which 75.9% were NHS patients. Mean patient age and initial body mass index were significantly higher for NHS compared to self-pay patients (mean age 45.8 ± 11.3 [SD] vs. 43.0 ±  12.0 years and initial body mass index 48.0 ± 7.9 vs. 42.9 ± 7.3...

Examining the effect of parent participation in an adult weight management program on changes in children's weight
This study aimed to assess this relationship. Children 2 –17 years of age with a parent who participated in a WMP were included in the study. Multilevel linear mixed-effects regression models were used, stratified by child weight status at the time of parental WMP participation (healthy weight, overweight/obesity) to determine change in children's BMI z from before to after parents WMP participation, including covariates of parent BMI and parental feeding practices. Parents (N = 77) were mostly white (76%) and female (84%). Children (N = 114) had a mean age of 10.5 ± 4.6; 47% had overweight or obesity. Childre...

Psychological support within tier 2 adult weight management services, are we doing enough for people with mental health needs? A mixed ‐methods survey
SummaryDepression and obesity are two of the most highly prevalent global public health concerns. Obesity and poor mental health are strongly associated, and it is likely that mental health needs are common in people seeking weight management services. The aim was to identify what psychological support is provided and required in tier 2 adult weight management services (T2 WMS). Online survey was conducted: quantitative data were summarized, and open-ended free-text questions were coded and thematically analysed. Participants were current or recent service users with self-reported mental health needs (n = 27), commissio...

Impact and recovery of the COVID ‐19 pandemic on weight status of children and adolescents
This study used routinely collected clinical data from the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network, comprising two socio-demographically diverse children's hospitals in New South Wales, Australia from 2018 to 2021. Of 245  836 individuals ≤18-years assessed, mean BMI percentile increased from 58.7 (SD 31.6) pre-COVID-19 to 59.8 (SD 31.7) (p <  .05) post-restrictions and overweight/obesity increased by 5.5% (obesity alone 6.3%), predominantly in children<12-years and from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The trend in BMI percentile was steady pre-COVID-19 (β = −0.03 [95% CI −0.07, 0.01]), peaked immediately...

Challenges and solutions to sustaining paediatric weight management programs in the United States
SummaryPaediatric weight management (PWM) programs in the United States (US) face challenges in providing sustainable multidisciplinary care for patients. The aim of this study was to report PWM program approaches to sustaining program delivery. A survey of 39 PWM programs was administered to identify challenges and solutions to program sustainability. Common and useful strategies for optimizing reimbursement for services included the use of applicable reimbursable diagnostic codes and management, billing for assessments and non-medical personnel services, and the use of hospital outpatient department clinic billing. Incre...

Weight regain and mental health outcomes following behavioural weight management programmes: A systematic review with meta ‐analyses
SummaryBehavioural weight management programmes (BWMPs) lead to weight loss but subsequent weight regain may harm mental health outcomes. We searched for randomised trials of BWMPs in adults with overweight/obesity with follow-up ≥12 months from baseline that measured weight change both at and after programme-end. We included only studies reporting mental health at or after programme-end. We meta-analysed changes in various mental health outcomes using a random-effects model by nature of the comparator group and by time since programme end. Subgroup analysis explored heterogeneity. We used mixed models and meta-regress...
