Increases in multimorbidity with weight class in the United States
This study employed data from the national Cerner HealthFacts Data Warehouse to identify changes in multimorbidity patterns by weight class using network analysis. Networks were generated for 154  528 middle‐aged patients in the following categories: normal weight, overweight, and classes 1, 2, and 3 obesity. The results show significant differences (P‐value<0.05) in prevalence by weight class for all but three of 82 diseases considered. The percentage of patients with multimorbidity (excluding obesity) increases from in 55.1% in patients with normal weight, to 57.88% with overweight, 70.39% with Class 1 obesity, ...

A systematic review of randomized controlled trials of dietary interventions for weight loss in adults in the Middle East and north Africa region
SummaryThe prevalence and incidence of obesity, and associated complications, such as type 2 diabetes, in the Middle East and north Africa (MENA) region rank among the highest in the world. Little is known about the effectiveness of dietary weight loss interventions conducted in the MENA region. We conducted a systematic review of randomized clinical trials aiming to assess the effectiveness of dietary interventions for weight loss in the adult population originating from and residing in the MENA region. In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, and EMBASE were systematically searched for randomized c...

Intermittent and continuous energy restriction result in similar weight loss, weight loss maintenance, and body composition changes in a 6 month randomized pilot study
This study assessed changes in weight, body composition, and macronutrient intake for an IER and a continuous energy restriction (CONT) approach within a multicomponent weight management intervention. We randomized 35 adults with overweight/obesity (BMI = 31.2  ± 2.4 kg/m2) to CONT or IER for 24  weeks (12‐week weight loss intervention and 12 weeks of weight loss maintenance). Diets were delivered within a multimodal weight management program including weekly group meetings with a registered dietitian, increased physical activity, and a comprehensive lifestyle change program. Retentio n and adherence were simila...

A disability ‐based exploration of psychosocial barriers and enablers to accessing dental services for people with clinically severe obesity: A qualitative study
This study concluded that PwCSO face significant barriers to accessing dental servi ces across all six categories highlighted in the disability literature. The study findings provide valuable patient‐based information regarding the psychosocial barriers to accessing dental services, which are relevant for all healthcare professionals. The study reflected an increased need for pro motion of the dentist's role in obesity management and obesity‐related dental training, including familiarization with the biopsychosocial domains of obesity to reduce weight related stigma and discrimination, as an area for further study. The...

“If you're offered help, take it”: A qualitative study examining bariatric patients' experience of telephone‐based cognitive behavioural therapy
SummaryThe increased recognition of patients' mental health needs after bariatric surgery has resulted in the emergence of accessible psychosocial interventions; however, there is a dearth of literature on patient experience and satisfaction with these interventions. We explored patients' perceptions and experiences of telephone ‐based cognitive behavioural therapy (Tele‐CBT) in this qualitative study. Ten participants from the Toronto Western Hospital Bariatric Surgery Program in Toronto, Canada who completed the Tele‐CBT (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02920112) were individually interviewed from November 2014 t...

The Bariatric Interprofessional Psychosocial Assessment of Suitability Scale predicts binge eating, quality of life and weight regain following bariatric surgery
SummaryPresurgical psychosocial evaluations are an important component of bariatric care; yet, bariatric programs vary widely in their assessment and interpretation of psychosocial risk. There is a need for validated clinical tools that help to standardize and streamline the assessment of variables relevant to surgical outcomes. The present study contributes to the validation of the Bariatric Interprofessional Psychosocial Assessment of Suitability Scale (BIPASS), a novel presurgical psychosocial evaluation tool, by: (a) examining the psychometric properties and optimal cutoff score, and; (b) examining the ability of the B...

The safety and efficacy of supervised exercise on pregnant women with overweight/obesity: A systematic review and meta ‐analysis of randomized controlled trials
SummaryBehavioural modification through physical activity and dietary counselling has been shown to have beneficial effects on pregnant women with overweight/obesity. Whether exercise alone with supervision (ie, supervised exercise) may also benefit for pregnant women with overweight/obesity is still unknown. This systematic review and meta ‐analysis aimed to determine the safety and efficacy of supervised exercise on pregnant women with overweight/obesity. PubMed, Cochrane library, Embase (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCO), and Web of Science were used to search publications using a combination of main keywords “obesity”, “ex...

Resolution of confluent and reticulated papillomatosis after bariatric surgery
SummaryConfluent and reticulated papillomatosis (CARP), a rare dermatologic disorder characterized by hyperpigmented papules that subsequently develop into plaques with reticulated margins, is frequently confused with acanthosis nigricans. The aetiology and pathogenesis of CARP is not yet fully understood, but it is often present in individuals with obesity and PCOS. This case report describes an African American adolescent female with obesity with a rash diagnosed as CARP after unsuccessful treatment with antifungals and corticosteroids. Her dermatosis proved recalcitrant to antibiotics and metformin but started to resolv...

Utilization of intensive behavioural treatment for obesity in patients with diabetes
SummaryObesity is a leading public health concern. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services implemented a healthcare procedure code for intensive behavioural therapy (IBT) in 2012 to facilitate payment for addressing obesity in primary care settings, followed by universal coverage by insurers for all adults. Our objective was to understand utilization of IBT from 2009 to 2017 in patients with a diabetes diagnosis. Leveraging electronic health record data from the PaTH Clinical Data Research Network (CDRN), a partnership of six health systems, utilization of IBT was summarized at a yearly basis. The trend of IBT preva...

Impact of sex hormones dysregulation and adiposity on the outcome of postmenopausal breast cancer patients
SummaryEpidemiological studies demonstrated that, in postmenopausal women, high circulating levels of testosterone, especially when associated with weight gain, positively correlated with an increased risk of breast cancer because of the augmented production of oestrogen via testosterone aromatization in the adipose tissue. Besides, growing evidence suggests that sulfatase can increase the tissue concentration of bioactive estradiol through the reconversion of estrone sulfate, thus providing a favourable milieu for epithelial cells expressing the oestrogen receptor. In this review, we will discuss how the “obesity‐insu...
