Ultrastructural localization and distribution of Nardilysin in mammalian male germ cells
Conclusions The strong and specific accumulation of Nardilysin in the manchette and axoneme suggests that the enzyme probably contributes either to the establishment of these specific microtubular structures and/or to their functional properties. (Source: Basic and Clinical Andrology)

Semen quality of 4480 young cancer and systemic disease patients: baseline data and clinical considerations
Conclusions The present data confirm on large series the deleterious impact of various cancers of the young adult on semen quality, establishing thus baseline data for future studies. Owing to the post-thaw quality of the frozen straws, future fertility projects for the majority of the patients studied (in case there is no post-treatment recovery of spermatogenesis) should necessitate an ICSI to provide the best chance of paternity whatever the fertility check-up in the female partner. Anabolic steroids abuse and male infertility
Abstract For several decades, testosterone and its synthetic derivatives have been used with anabolic and androgenic purposes. These substances were first restricted to professional bodybuilders, but become more and more popular among recreational athletes. Up to date, 3,000,000 anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) users have been reported in the United States with an increasing prevalence, making AAS consumption a major public health growing concern. Infertility is defined by the WHO as the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse and a ma...

Low serum insulin-like growth factor-1 in patients with erectile dysfunction
Conclusion In this study serum IGF-1 levels were found to be associated with endothelial dysfunction that predicts ED. Serum IGF-1 level appears to be a specific predictor of ED, and it might be used in early prediction of ED in male population. (Source: Basic and Clinical Andrology)

Testosterone and gonadotropins but not SHBG vary with CKD stages in young and middle aged men
Conclusions Our results indicate that CKD stage per se is a factor affecting testosterone levels in combination with age in men between 18 and 50 years old with CKD 1–5 stage, not treated with hemodialysis. With increased CKD stage there was a significant increase in LH level and a pattern of hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. SHBG remained unchanged between the CKD stages. Assessment of the frequency of sperm annulus defects in a large cohort of patients presenting asthenozoospermia
Conclusions We conclude that defects or an absence of the annulus are not frequently associated with asthenozoospermia. The use of annulus defects as a diagnostic endpoint in patients is therefore not appropriate. (Source: Basic and Clinical Andrology)

Target antigens for Hs-14 monoclonal antibody and their various expression in normozoospermic and asthenozoospermic men
Conclusion The Hs-14 antibody enables discrimination between sterile or subfertile asthenozoospermic and fertile normozoospermic men. Decreased levels of TERA in men can be used as a biomarker of reduced fertility. (Source: Basic and Clinical Andrology)

Sperm DNA fragmentation after radioiodine treatment for differentiated thyroid cancer
Conclusions Treatment with 131I induces alterations in sperm chromatin as well as in sperm parameters a short time (3 months) after a first dose of 131I with persistence of sperm alterations until 12 months after a second dose. Sperm banking should be recommended before treatment. (Source: Basic and Clinical Andrology)

Clinical endocrinological evaluation of the gonadal axis (testosterone, LH and FSH) in prostate cancer patients switched from a GnRH antagonist to a LHRH agonist
Conclusions A testosterone surge was observed in 8.3 % of the study patients; however, it was very short-lived and mild. LH and FSH levels were significantly higher 1 month after administration compared with 2 or 3 months after degarelix administration. (Source: Basic and Clinical Andrology)

Impact on ICSI outcomes of adding 24 h of in vitro culture before testicular sperm freezing: a retrospective study
Conclusion Despite improving motility, freezing spermatozoa 24 h after testicular biopsy had a potential negative effect on ICSI outcomes, notably on delivery rates. These results may be related to the detrimental impact of the additional culture on the nuclear integrity of sperm. (Source: Basic and Clinical Andrology)

Successful pregnancies and healthy live births using frozen-thawed sperm retrieved by a new modified Hotchkiss procedure in males with retrograde ejaculation: first case series
Conclusions We report the largest series of births using frozen-thawed spermatozoa retrieved from post-ejaculatory urine by a modified Hotchkiss technique. This series of births demonstrates that this new modified Hotchkiss technique allows for successful association with sperm cryopreservation, leading to an efficient and easy management of couples with refractory retrograde ejaculation.
