A combined approach for the calculation of activation yields and the characterization of materials for a medical cyclotron
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 Nov 22;204:111116. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.111116. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCyclotrons for the production of radiopharmaceuticals have become important tools in modern nuclear medicine. At the end of their lifecycles, such installations have to be dismantled and any activated materials must be treated according to the local radiation protection legislation. Using a simulation model, we have developed a non-destructive approach for the radiological characterization of components inside and around an IBA Cyclone 18/9 cyclotron. The methodology is based on software tools developed at CERN (FLU...

Phytosynthesis of gold-198 nanoparticles for a potential therapeutic radio-photothermal agent
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 Dec 7;204:111141. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.111141. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe produced spherical gold-198 nanoparticles with an average size of 41 nm, good stability, and high radiochemical purity for a promising single agent of radio-photothermal therapy using Curcuma longa rhizome extract as a reducing and capping agent. The combination of in vitro treatment using gold-198 nanoparticles and irradiation of 980 nm wavelength lasers with a power output of 2 W/cm2 induced hyperthermia temperature and exhibited enhancement of the percentage dead on MDA-MB-123 cancer cells compared to gold-198 ...

Calibrating GESPECOR model of computing the full-energy peak efficiency of coaxial high-purity germanium detectors by Monte Carlo simulation
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 Dec 9;204:111135. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.111135. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this work, a classical approach was used for calibrating the GESPECOR detector model for computing the full-energy peak efficiency of p-type coaxial HPGe detectors that is based on the use of linear least squares optimization. The key element of the work is the multiplicative model developed for approximating the values of the full-energy peak efficiency provided by GESPECOR code. It was linearized using the logarithmic transformation to allow an easy use of the linear least squares optimization. A procedure was a...

Measurement of energy and directional distribution of neutron ambient dose equivalent for the < sup > 7 < /sup > Li(p,n) < sup > 7 < /sup > Be reaction
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 Dec 4;204:111140. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.111140. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDouble differential neutron fluence distributions were measured in the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction for proton beam energies 7, 9 and 12 MeV. Seven liquid scintillator based detectors were employed to measure neutron fluence distributions using the Time of Flight technique. Neutron ambient dose equivalents were determined from the measured fluence distribution using ICRP (International Commission on Radiological Protection) recommended fluence to dose equivalent conversion coefficients. Neutron dose equivalents were also mea...

Transfer factors for natural radioactivity into olive mill pomace
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 Dec 7;204:111136. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.111136. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe transfer factor (TF) of naturally occurring radioactivity between soil and olive mill pomace (OMP) was calculated in this study. Nine samples were collected from three locations in north Jordan. The study focused on calculating the 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs activity concentrations in both soil and OMP samples using high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray spectrometry. The average activity levels in the soil samples were determined to be 24.0±10.1, 31.3±9.1, 323.7±68.4, and 1.0±0.4 (Bqkg-1), respectively. In...

Production of pharmaceutical grade [ < sup > 201 < /sup > Tl]Thallous chloride using 30  MeV cyclotron
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 Nov 30;204:111128. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.111128. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMultiple patient doses of [201Tl]TlCl has been produced using electrodeposited enriched 203Tl in 30 MeV cyclotron (Cyclone-30) with 28 MeV proton energy at 50 μA beam current for 8 h. Ion Exchange Column Chromatography (IECC) and liquid-liquid extraction has been employed for semi-automated radiochemical separation and purification of produced [201Tl]TlCl. The produced [201Tl]TlCl was used in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients.PMID:38056282 | DOI:10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.111128 (Source: Applied Radiation and Isotopes)

Application of polyimide films as a nuclear track detector (2): A latent track structure study with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 Dec 4;204:111125. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.111125. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper reports the relation between latent track structure and the detection threshold of etch pits formation in UPILEX-S® and Kapton. At the similar stopping power value, effective track core radii and G values for heavier ions are lower than those of lighter ions. These results would be due to the difference of the radial dose distribution for low- and high-velocity ions. The G value starts more rapidly rising above 600 and 1000 keV/μm for Kapton and UPILEX-S®, respectively. The detection threshold of UPILEX...
