Neutron attenuation features and elastic properties of silicate glasses containing Ta < sub > 2 < /sub > O < sub > 5 < /sub > , and Li < sub > 2 < /sub > O
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 Jun 7;199:110896. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.110896. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this investigation, the elastic properties and neutrons attenuation factors for some optical glasses containing Ta2O5, SiO2, and Li2O were reported. The present glasses were also consisted of ZrO2 and Nb2O5 in very small concentrations. The glasses are chemically defined as 26.47Li2O-5.88ZrO2-(20-x)Ta2O5-xNb2O5-47.06SiO2, where, x takes the values: 0, 2.94, 5.88, and 11.77 mol%. The elastic properties of these glassy specimens were determined by employing Makishima-Mackenzie's theory (M.M.T). By using the same met...

Dosimetric evaluation of < sup > 123 < /sup > I (Iodide) and < sup > 99m < /sup > Tc (Pertechnetate) in the thyroid of neonates using Cristy-Eckerman and Segars anatomical representations
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 May 30;199:110877. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.110877. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUsing the MIRD formalism, and the Cristy-Eckeman and Segars anthropomorphic representations, the absorbed dose in the thyroid of newborns, was calculated when 123I (iodide) and 99mTc (pertechnetate) are used during the diagnostic procedures. The dose results will allow exploring the dosimetric impact generated by the use of these radiopharmaceutical compounds and the use of two representations. Regardless the radiopharmaceutical compound and the anthropomorphic representation is the thyroid self-dose is the greatest...

Design of intermittent continuous measurement of radon concentration in water
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 Jun 7;199:110894. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.110894. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency established the maximum contaminant level limit for radon concentration in drinking water as 11.1 Bq L-1. A new device based on the bubbling method with a 290 mL sample bottle was designed for intermittent continuous measurement of water radon concentration. A STM32 is used to control the switch of the water pump and the valves. The Water-Radon-Measurement software written in C# is to connect RAD7 and calculate the water radon concentration automatically.PMID:37302298 | DOI:10...

Simulation of sand particles detection inside a pipeline by photon radiography
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 May 25;199:110876. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.110876. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTransmission pipelines are vital arteries in the petroleum industry, as the survival of this system depends on maintaining the capability of transferring fluid through the pipelines. In petroleum industry, transfer system faults lead to significant economic and social consequences and sometimes may produce critical situations. Transmission pipelines connect all systems, and any defect in their functions adversely affects other systems directly or indirectly. Small quantities of sand particles in transmission pipelin...

Proof-of-concept studies of novel protocols for producing highly pure < sup > 48 < /sup > V from a < sup > 48 < /sup > Cr/ < sup > 48 < /sup > V generator
This study suggests that, to maximize the yield and isotopic purity of 48V, the best production protocol would involve utilizing two separations with TRU resin and 10 M HNO3 to isolate 48Cr and purify the generated 48V.PMID:37302300 | DOI:10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.110855 (Source: Applied Radiation and Isotopes)

Standoff alpha radiation measurement of surface contamination based on radioluminescence
We present the results of the detection efficiency calibrating of standoff alpha radioactive sources using simulation and experiment. At the same time, a numerical integration-based surface contamination measurement method is designed, computed, and validated through experiments and simulations. Finally, the minimum detectable surface activity of the method is given for different measurement conditions.PMID:37300927 | DOI:10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.110867 (Source: Applied Radiation and Isotopes)

An efficiency function model of segmented gamma scanning for measuring radioactive waste drum
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 Jun 5;199:110895. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.110895. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSegmented gamma scanning (SGS) is a fast and effective method for measuring radioactive waste drum. The efficiency calibration is directly related to the accuracy of reconstructed radioactivity. An efficiency function model and SGS efficiency calibration method are proposed for solving existing SGS efficiency calibration problems such as time lag, limited by experimental sources or difficult to effectively combine with SGS system. The SGS system model is established by the Geant4 to calculate the segment efficiency u...
