A parametric bootstrap approach for computing confidence intervals for genetic correlations with application to genetically-determined protein-protein networks
HGG Adv. 2024 May 7:100304. doi: 10.1016/j.xhgg.2024.100304. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGenetic correlation refers to the correlation between genetic determinants of a pair of traits. When using individual-level data, it is typically estimated based on a bivariate model specification where the correlation between the two variables is identifiable and can be estimated from a covariance model that incorporates the genetic relationship between individuals, e.g., using a pre-specified kinship matrix. Inference relying on asymptotic normality of the genetic correlation parameter estimates may be inaccurate when the sample si...

Association between poor sleep and mental health issues in Indigenous communities across the globe: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: While there is limited research available, our finding suggests an association between poor sleep and mental health issues in Indigenous people. Further investigation of the potential role of, and investing in, sleep health could help support mental health.PMID:38721053 | PMC:PMC11078045 | DOI:10.1093/sleepadvances/zpae028 (Source: Adv Data)

Perspectives on tracking data reuse across biodata resources
Bioinform Adv. 2024 Apr 25;4(1):vbae057. doi: 10.1093/bioadv/vbae057. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTMOTIVATION: Data reuse is a common and vital practice in molecular biology and enables the knowledge gathered over recent decades to drive discovery and innovation in the life sciences. Much of this knowledge has been collated into molecular biology databases, such as UniProtKB, and these resources derive enormous value from sharing data among themselves. However, quantifying and documenting this kind of data reuse remains a challenge.RESULTS: The article reports on a one-day virtual workshop hosted by the UniProt Consortium in M...

Spillover effects of organizational support for patient and workplace safety on safety outcomes: The mediating role of safety compliance
CONCLUSION: Improving organizational support for patient safety can lead to better workplace safety outcome, and enhancing support for workplace safety can result in better patient safety outcome. Given this mutually beneficial relationship, healthcare organizations should simultaneously promote safety in both areas rather than focusing on just one.IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE: Study results highlight the need to recognize the interconnected nature of patient and workplace safety in order to achieve better overall safety outcomes.IMPACT: This study shows that organizational safety efforts for patient...

Robotic-Assisted Management of Ureteral Complications in Post-Renal Transplant Patients: A Case Series and Literature Review
Conclusions: Robotic-assisted ureteral reconstruction is a technically challenging but highly feasible technique that may provide the benefits of minimally invasive surgery while still allowing definitive reconstruction. A Post-Marketing Surveillance Study of Nusinersen for Spinal Muscular Atrophy in Routine Medical Practice in China: Interim Results
CONCLUSION: Nusinersen was generally well tolerated with an acceptable overall safety profile, consistent with the known safety of nusinersen. Efficacy, safety, and nusinersen exposure are consistent with prior observations. These results support continuing PANDA and evaluation of nusinersen in Chinese participants with SMA.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier, NCT04419233.PMID:38722537 | DOI:10.1007/s12325-024-02852-7 (Source: Adv Data)

Development of a Conceptual Model of Physical Functioning Limitations Experienced by Patients with Late-Stage Chronic Kidney Disease: A Qualitative Interview Study
CONCLUSIONS: This study found that patients with late-stage CKD not receiving dialysis who experience physical functioning limitations report a range of impacts on their daily lives. The comprehensive conceptual model summarizes the concepts reported and the relationships between them, providing a holistic understanding of how patients with late-stage CKD are affected by physical functioning limitations. Electrically Reconfigurable Phase-Change Transmissive Metasurface
This study demonstrated a non-mechanical, non-volatile transmissive filter based on low-loss PCMs with a 200 µm×200 µm switching area. The device/metafilter can be consistently switched between low- and high-transmission states using electrical pulses with a switching contrast ratio of 5.5 dB. The device was reversibly switched for 1250 cycles before accelerated degradation took place. The work represents an important step toward realizing free-space reconfigurable optics based on PCMs. This article is protected by copyright. Introduction
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2024;1447:1-10. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-54513-9_1.ABSTRACTAtopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing condition that is characterized by itching and redness of the skin. Our modern usage of atopic dermatitis dates back to 1933, when Wise and Sulzberger first coined the term to signify the disease's close association with other respiratory atopy, such as bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. A recent systematic review of 69 cross-sectional and cohort studies has confirmed that AD is now a worldwide phenomenon with lifetime AD prevalences of well over 20% in many affluent country settings. Although there...

The Psychosocial Impact of Atopic Dermatitis
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2024;1447:69-81. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-54513-9_7.ABSTRACTAtopic dermatitis is a chronic skin condition that has significant psychosocial and quality-of-life impact. The condition causes physical discomfort, emotional distress, embarrassment, social stigma, and daily activity limitation. In an effort to assess these aspects of disease burden, quality-of-life measurement tools were developed. Through use of these tools, we have expanded our knowledge of the psychosocial and quality-of-life burden of this condition. A variety of quality of assessment tools exist, yet there is no consensus on which tool is b...

American Academy of Dermatology Guidelines for Managing Atopic Dermatitis
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2024;1447:217-225. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-54513-9_18.ABSTRACTThe American Academy of Dermatology first published a series of guidelines for diagnosing and managing atopic dermatitis in 2014. Twelve clinicians were selected to review, grade, and offer clinical insight on available data regarding the clinical features, symptomology, pathophysiology, education, treatment, and emerging clinical studies on atopic dermatitis (AD). Based on these findings, the AAD released a guideline to streamline information on atopic dermatitis for physicians, recommending using clinical evidence to diagnose and first treatin...

Association of systemic lupus erythematosus standard of care immunosuppressants with glucocorticoid use and disease outcomes: a multicentre cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests a steroid-sparing benefit for most commonly used standard of care immunosuppressants used in SLE treatment, some of which were associated with an increased likelihood of attaining LLDAS, or reduced incidence of flares. It also highlights the unmet need for effective treatments in lupus.PMID:38720354 | DOI:10.1186/s42358-024-00366-y (Source: Adv Data)
