Medical Education Electives Can Promote Teaching and Research Interests Among Medical Students
CONCLUSION: Doing medical education electives at AUSOM enhanced students' interest in teaching, and students reported that they could understand research methodologies, especially those related to medical education. Medical students should have opportunities for electives in medical education, and more research is required to evaluate the effectiveness of medical education electives across medical schools.PMID:38469135 | PMC:PMC10926923 | DOI:10.2147/AMEP.S453964 (Source: Adv Data)

RSC Adv. 2024 Mar 11;14(12):8260-8263. doi: 10.1039/d4ra01496k. eCollection 2024 Mar 6.ABSTRACTA new linear thiopeptide, bernitrilecin (1), was isolated from Streptomyces sp. CPCC 203702. Compound 1 is the first example of a nitrile-bearing thiopeptide. Its structure and absolute configuration were elucidated by extensive analysis of spectroscopic data and Marfey's method. The biosynthesis of the nitrile unit for 1 was proposed to be through oxidations, decarboxylation, and dehydration. An update on cardiovascular disorders in systemic lupus erythematosus
Adv Clin Exp Med. 2024 Mar 12. doi: 10.17219/acem/184868. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSystemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease with a complex multifactorial etiology that develops as a result of autoimmune processes, leading to widespread inflammation and malfunction of multiple tissues and organs, and, as a consequence, triggers arterial hypertension, conduction disorders, valvular heart disease, pulmonary hypertension (PH), and venous thromboembolism events (VTE), contributing to increased mortality. Moreover, autoimmune abnormalities can accelerate atherogenesis and lead to many SLE manifesta...

Extrathymic AIRE-Expressing Cells: A Historical Perspective
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2024;1444:33-49. doi: 10.1007/978-981-99-9781-7_3.ABSTRACTSince its discovery, Aire has been the topic of numerous studies in its role as a transcriptional regulator in the thymus where it promotes the "promiscuous" expression of a large repertoire of tissue-restricted antigens (TRAs) that are normally expressed only in the immune periphery. This process occurs in specialized medullary thymic epithelial cells (mTECs) and mediates the elimination of self-reactive T cells or promotes their conversion to the Foxp3+ regulatory T cell lineage, both of which are required for the prevention of autoimmunity. In r...

Comparison of Healthcare Costs for Women with Treated Versus Untreated Vasomotor Symptoms Due to Menopause
CONCLUSIONS: Most women with VMS due to menopause were not treated within 6 months following diagnosis. While both on- and off-label treatment increased the total cost of care compared with untreated controls, those increases were modest in magnitude and should not impede treatment for women who report symptom improvement as a result of treatment.PMID:38467985 | DOI:10.1007/s12325-024-02821-0 (Source: Adv Data)

Tenets and Methods of Fractal Analysis (1/f Noise)
Adv Neurobiol. 2024;36:57-77. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-47606-8_3.ABSTRACTThis chapter deals with the methodical challenges confronting researchers of the fractal phenomenon known as pink or 1/f noise. This chapter introduces concepts and statistical techniques for identifying fractal patterns in empirical time series. It defines some basic statistical terms, describes two essential characteristics of pink noise (self-similarity and long memory), and outlines four parameters representing the theoretical properties of fractal processes: the Hurst coefficient (H), the scaling exponent (α), the power exponent (β), and the frac...

Fractal Similarity of Pain Brain Networks
Adv Neurobiol. 2024;36:639-657. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-47606-8_32.ABSTRACTThe conscious perception of pain is the result of dynamic interactions of neural activities from local brain regions to distributed brain networks. Mapping out the networks of functional connections between brain regions that form and disperse when an experimental participant received nociceptive stimulations allow to characterize the pattern of network connections related to the pain experience.Although the pattern of intra- and inter-areal connections across the brain are incredibly complex, they appear also largely scale free, with "fractal" conne...

Advances in Understanding Fractals in Affective and Anxiety Disorders
Adv Neurobiol. 2024;36:717-732. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-47606-8_36.ABSTRACTIn this chapter, we review the research that has applied fractal measures to the study of the most common psychological disorders, that is, affective and anxiety disorders. Early studies focused on heart rate, but diverse measures have also been examined, from variations in subjective mood, or hand movements, to electroencephalogram or magnetoencephalogram data. In general, abnormal fractal dynamics in different physiological and behavioural outcomes have been observed in mental disorders. Despite the disparity of variables measured, fractal analysis...

Fractal Analysis in MATLAB: A Tutorial for Neuroscientists
Adv Neurobiol. 2024;36:815-825. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-47606-8_41.ABSTRACTMATLAB is one of the software platforms most widely used for scientific computation. MATLAB includes a large set of functions, packages, and toolboxes that make it simple and fast to obtain complex mathematical and statistical computations for many applications. In this chapter, we review some tools available in MATLAB for performing fractal analyses on typical neuroscientific data in a practical way. We provide detailed examples of how to calculate the fractal dimension of 1D, 2D, and 3D data in MATLAB. Furthermore, we review other software packages...

Fractal Fluency: Processing of Fractal Stimuli Across Sight, Sound, and Touch
Adv Neurobiol. 2024;36:907-934. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-47606-8_45.ABSTRACTPeople are continually exposed to the rich complexity generated by the repetition of fractal patterns at different size scales. Fractals are prevalent in natural scenery and also in patterns generated by artists and mathematicians. In this chapter, we will investigate the powerful significance of fractals for the human senses. In particular, we propose that fractals with mid-range complexity play a unique role in our visual experiences because the visual system has adapted to these prevalent natural patterns. This adaptation is evident at multiple st...

Fractal Geometry Meets Computational Intelligence: Future Perspectives
Adv Neurobiol. 2024;36:983-997. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-47606-8_48.ABSTRACTCharacterizations in terms of fractals are typically employed for systems with complex and multiscale descriptions. A prominent example of such systems is provided by the human brain, which can be idealized as a complex dynamical system made of many interacting subunits. The human brain can be modeled in terms of observable variables together with their spatio-temporal-functional relations. Computational intelligence is a research field bridging many nature-inspired computational methods, such as artificial neural networks, fuzzy systems, and evoluti...
