Pan-Cancer Single-Cell and Spatial-Resolved Profiling Reveals the Immunosuppressive Role of APOE+ Macrophages in Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy
Adv Sci (Weinh). 2024 Apr 3:e2401061. doi: 10.1002/advs.202401061. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe heterogeneity of macrophages influences the response to immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy. However, few studies explore the impact of APOE+ macrophages on ICI therapy using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and machine learning methods. The scRNA-seq and bulk RNA-seq data are Integrated to construct an M.Sig model for predicting ICI response based on the distinct molecular signatures of macrophage and machine learning algorithms. Comprehensive single-cell analysis as well as in vivo and in vitro experiments are...

Maternal nano-titanium dioxide inhalation exposure alters placental cyclooxygenase and oxidant balance in a sexually dimorphic manner
Adv Redox Res. 2024 Apr;10:10.1016/j.arres.2023.100090. doi: 10.1016/j.arres.2023.100090.ABSTRACTThe placenta plays a critical role in nutrient-waste exchange between the maternal and fetal circulation, and thus impacts fetal growth and development. We have previously shown that nano-titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) inhalation exposure during gestation decreased fetal female pup and placenta mass [1], which persists in the following generation [2]. In utero exposed females, once mated, their offspring's placentas had increased capacity for H2O2 production. Generation of oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), have been show...

Diagnosing and Discussing Sexual Abuse: A Scoping Review on Training Methods for Health Care Professionals
CONCLUSION: This scoping review summarizes on how to effectively train health care professionals. Flaws and difficulties in measuring the effectiveness of training courses were discussed. Recognition and discussion of past sexual abuse by health care providers can be effectively trained using an alternating mix of multiple active and passive training methods with room for feedback and personal experiences.PMID:38562652 | PMC:PMC10982581 | DOI:10.2147/AMEP.S444718 (Source: Adv Data)

Edward O. Bixler, PhD: from the Apollo project and chimpanzees to sleep epidemiology
Sleep Adv. 2024 Apr 1;5(1):zpae020. doi: 10.1093/sleepadvances/zpae020. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTWhat an honor to write about Dr. Edward O. Bixler's contributions to the sleep field. In 1967, Dr. Bixler published a case report on a chimpanzee with implanted brain electrodes while working at an Air Force base in New Mexico. A few years later, in 1971, he published on the sleep effects of flurazepam in individuals with insomnia together with Dr. Anthony Kales, data that he had collected when the Sleep Research & Treatment Center (SRTC) was housed at the University of California Los Angeles. Dr. Bixler, a meticulous scien...

A systematic review exploring healthcare professionals' perceptions of take-home naloxone dispensing in acute care areas
CONCLUSION: Take-home naloxone is a vital harm reduction initiative. However, barriers exist that prevent the optimum implementation of these initiatives.IMPACT: What is already known: Deaths due to opioid overdose are a global health concern, with take-home naloxone emerging as a key harm reduction scheme. Globally, less than 10% of people who use drugs have access to treatment initiatives, including take-home naloxone. An optimum point of distribution of take-home naloxone is post-acute hospital care.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: There is role confusion regarding responsibility for the provision of take-home naloxone and patient...

Impact of telehealth on stroke survivor-caregiver dyad in at-home rehabilitation: A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: The results support the application of telehealth in the discharge phase of hospitals and rehabilitation centres for stroke survivors and caregivers. TLR could be considered a substitute for traditional rehabilitation only if it is supported by a tele-learning programme for the caregiver and ongoing technical, computer and health support to satisfy the dyad's needs.IMPACT: Designing a comprehensive telemedicine programme upon the return home of the dyad involved in the stroke improves the quality of life, functional, psychological, social, family status, self-efficacy, use of health systems and the dyad's prep...

Game design elements of serious games in the education of medical and healthcare professions: a mixed-methods systematic review of underlying theories and teaching effectiveness
Adv Health Sci Educ Theory Pract. 2024 Apr 2. doi: 10.1007/s10459-024-10327-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSerious games, as a learning resource, enhance their game character by embedding game design elements that are typically used in entertainment games. Serious games in its entirety have already proven their teaching effectiveness in different educational contexts including medical education. The embedded game design elements play an essential role for a game's effectiveness and thus they should be selected based on evidence-based theories. For game design elements embedded in serious games used for the education of m...

Immunogenicity profile of rurioctocog alfa pegol in previously treated patients with severe congenital hemophilia A
Blood Adv. 2024 Apr 2:bloodadvances.2023011780. doi: 10.1182/bloodadvances.2023011780. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRurioctocog alfa pegol is an extended half-life full-length recombinant factor VIII (FVIII) bound to 20 kDa polyethylene glycol (PEG) that has been shown to be well tolerated and efficacious in the treatment and prevention of bleeding events in previously treated patients with severe hemophilia A. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of immunogenicity data collected during 6 clinical studies of rurioctocog alfa pegol including a total of 360 unique previously treated patients with severe hemophilia A. Immune status and selection of patients for immunotherapy in myeloma: a Proposal
Blood Adv. 2024 Apr 2:bloodadvances.2023011242. doi: 10.1182/bloodadvances.2023011242. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNewer immune-based approaches based on recruitment and redirection of endogenous and/or synthetic immunity such as chimeric antigen-receptor-T (CAR-T) cells or bispecific antibodies are transforming the clinical management of multiple myeloma (MM). Contributions of the immune system to the anti-tumor effects of myeloma therapies are also increasingly appreciated. Clinical malignancy in MM originates in the setting of systemic immune alterations that begin early in myelomagenesis and regional changes in immun...
