The outcomes measured and reported in observational studies of incidental and untreated intracranial meningioma: A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Outcome measurement across observational studies of incidental and untreated intracranial meningioma is heterogeneous. The standardized outcome terms identified will be prioritized through an eDelphi survey and consensus meeting of key stakeholders (including patients), in order to develop a Core Outcome Set for use in future observational studies.PMID:38596715 | PMC:PMC11003528 | DOI:10.1093/noajnl/vdae042 (Source: Adv Data)

Advancing noninvasive glioma classification with diffusion radiomics: Exploring the impact of signal intensity normalization
CONCLUSIONS: ADC radiomics can enhance the performance of conventional MRI-based radiomic models, particularly for IDH-wild-type glioma. The benefit of intensity normalization of ADC maps depends on the type and context of the used data.PMID:38596719 | PMC:PMC11003539 | DOI:10.1093/noajnl/vdae043 (Source: Adv Data)

Extracellular Vesicles from Highly Metastatic Osteosarcoma Cells Induce Pro-Tumorigenic Macrophage Phenotypes
Adv Biol (Weinh). 2024 Apr 10:e2300577. doi: 10.1002/adbi.202300577. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMetastasis is the principal factor in poor prognosis for individuals with osteosarcoma (OS). Understanding the events that lead to metastasis is critical to develop better interventions for this disease. Alveolar macrophages are potentially involved in priming the lung microenvironment for OS metastasis, yet the mechanisms involved in this process remain unclear. Since extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a known actor in primary tumor development, their potential role in OS metastagenesis through macrophage modulation is explore...

Nurses' perspectives on shared decision-making in the daily care of hospitalized patients with dementia: An exploratory qualitative study
CONCLUSION: This study highlights the complexity of SDM in patients with dementia. It demonstrates the importance of the involvement of relatives, omission of patient goals in discussions and perceived deficiencies of nurses. The early identification of dementia, evaluation of nuanced capacity and targeted communication are essential. Further research and enhanced training are required to improve care in this context.IMPACT: Potential areas for further research on SDM in nurses involving patients with dementia include investigating the effects of integrating goal discussions into SDM training for nurses, overcoming barrier...

A data-driven QSPR model for screening organic corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel using machine learning techniques
In this study, a data-driven quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) model using the gradient boosting decision tree (GB) algorithm combined with the permutation feature importance (PFI) technique was developed to predict the corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE) of organic compounds on carbon steel. The results showed that the PFI method effectively selected the molecular descriptors most relevant to the IE. Using these important molecular descriptors, an IE predictive model was trained on a dataset encompassing various categories of organic corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel, achieving RMSE, MAE, and R2 of ...

Application of sentiment and word frequency analysis of physician review sites to evaluate refractive surgery care
CONCLUSIONS: Both the average Stars and VADER sentiment score suggest a high satisfaction among refractive patients. Word frequency analysis revealed that patients value non-clinical aspects of care, including interactions with staff, insurance coverage, and wait-times, suggesting that improving non-clinical factors could enhance patient satisfaction with refractive surgery.PMID:38590556 | PMC:PMC10999482 | DOI:10.1016/j.aopr.2024.03.002 (Source: Adv Data)

Long-Term Treatment With Selective PI3K δ Inhibitor Leniolisib in Adults With Activated PI3Kδ Syndrome
Blood Adv. 2024 Apr 9:bloodadvances.2023011000. doi: 10.1182/bloodadvances.2023011000. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTActivated phosphoinositide 3-kinase delta syndrome (APDS) is an inborn error of immunity that manifests as immune deficiency and dysregulation; symptoms include frequent infections and lymphoproliferation. In our dose-finding and phase 3 placebo-controlled trials, treatment with the selective PI3Kδ inhibitor leniolisib reduced lymphoproliferation and normalized lymphocyte subsets. Here, we present 6 years of follow-up from the 6 adult patients in the original dose-finding trial receiving leniolisib. We used...

Predicting inhibitor development using a random peptide phage-display library approach in the SIPPET Cohort
Blood Adv. 2024 Apr 9:bloodadvances.2023011388. doi: 10.1182/bloodadvances.2023011388. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInhibitor development is the most severe complication of hemophilia A care, and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to use a novel IgG epitope mapping method to explore the factor VIII (FVIII)-specific epitope profile in the SIPPET cohort population and to develop an epitope-mapping based inhibitor prediction model. The population consisted of 122 previously untreated patients with severe hemophilia A that were followed-up for 50 days of exposure to FVIII or 3 year...

Utilizing Low-Dimensional Molecular Embeddings for Rapid Chemical Similarity Search
Adv Inf Retr. 2024 Mar;14609:34-49. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-56060-6_3. Epub 2024 Mar 16.ABSTRACTNearest neighbor-based similarity searching is a common task in chemistry, with notable use cases in drug discovery. Yet, some of the most commonly used approaches for this task still leverage a brute-force approach. In practice this can be computationally costly and overly time-consuming, due in part to the sheer size of modern chemical databases. Previous computational advancements for this task have generally relied on improvements to hardware or dataset-specific tricks that lack generalizability. Approaches that leverage lowe...

Potential Applications of Mitochondrial Therapy with a Focus on Parkinson's Disease and Mitochondrial Transplantation
CONCLUSION: The development of innovative therapeutics for mitochondria-directed treatments in Parkinson's disease may be aided by optimizing mitochondrial dynamics. Many neurological diseases have been studied in animal and cellular models, and it has been found that mitochondrial maintenance can slow the death of neuronal cells. It has been hypothesized that drug therapies for neurodegenerative diseases that focus on mitochondrial dysfunction will help to delay the onset of neuronal dysfunction.PMID:38585467 | PMC:PMC10997929 | DOI:10.34172/apb.2024.019 (Source: Adv Data)
