Arab mothers' viewpoints: Why their children are removed from home
CONCLUSIONS: The study sheds light, for the first time as far as we know, on the perspectives of Arab mothers concerning their children's removal. Early support could avert removal, and social workers should make greater efforts to promote child reunification. It is paramount that professionals build trust with these mothers, through culturally sensitive and empowering engagement.PMID:38636155 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106793 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Rapid molecular epidemiology investigations into two recent measles outbreaks in Israel detected from October 2023 to January 2024
In this study, we validate transmission pathways uncovered by epidemiological investigations using a rapid molecular approach, based on complete measles virus genomes. The presented findings support this rapid molecular approach in complementing conventional contact tracing and highlight its potential for informing public health interventions. New initiative aims to bolster funding for scientists in war-torn Ukraine
WASHINGTON, D.C.— For astrophysicist David Spergel, teaching at a summer school about data science in August 2023 in Ukraine was a “surreal” experience. At times, utterly normal—smart students and collegial dinners in the charming cobblestoned city of Lviv. But punctuated by sirens and cellphone alerts warning of Russian missile attacks that compelled attendees to seek refuge in bomb shelters. Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation , started to think there had to be something more the West could do to aid his Ukrainian colleagues. Eight months later, that idea has blossomed into the Scienc...

Outcomes and predictors of left ventricle recovery in patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation
CONCLUSIONS: LV recovery following TAVI and the extent of this recovery are major determinants of midterm mortality in patients with severe AS and severe LV dysfunction undergoing TAVI. Patients with no previous MI and those with an mAVG >40 mmHg show the best results following TAVI, which are at least equivalent to those for patients without severe LV dysfunction. Phthalates and substitute plasticizers: Main achievements from the European human biomonitoring initiative HBM4EU
Int J Hyg Environ Health. 2024 Apr 16;259:114378. doi: 10.1016/j.ijheh.2024.114378. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhthalates and the substitute plasticizer DINCH belong to the first group of priority substances investigated by the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU) to answer policy-relevant questions and safeguard an efficient science-to-policy transfer of results. Human internal exposure levels were assessed using two data sets from all European regions and Israel. The first collated existing human biomonitoring (HBM) data (2005-2019). The second consisted of new data generated in the harmonized "HBM4EU Alig...

Risk factors and mortality of candidemia in a children's public hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil
This study aimed to estimate the incidence and risk factors associated with mortality in candidemia cases occurring in a public children's hospital in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil. It is a retrospective transversal study. Every patient under the age of 18 admitted to the study facility from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2019, was considered potentially eligible to be included if they had candidemia. We collected clinical data from medical records. We included 113 blood cultures yielding positive results for Candida. The incidence rate was 2.12 per 1000 admissions. The most common Candida species was Candida parapsilosis. Sept...

Measles outbreak associated with a preschool setting among partially vaccinated children in the Tel Aviv District, Israel, October 2023
Vaccine. 2024 Apr 15:S0264-410X(24)00427-4. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.04.013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn October 2023, the Tel Aviv District was notified of ten cases of measles. The outbreak initiated in a preschool with high vaccination coverage with one dose of MMR vaccine. Serological testing was available for eight patients (six children and two adults). Among the six children vaccinated with one dose of MMR vaccine, primary vaccine failure was demonstrated. Among the adults, secondary vaccine failure was confirmed. The outbreak was successfully contained due to a combination of factors, notably its occurrence...

Genetic diagnosis and detection rates using C9orf72 repeat expansion and a multi-gene panel in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
AbstractAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. It is mostly sporadic, with theC9orf72 repeat expansion being the most common genetic cause. While the prevalence ofC9orf72-ALS in patients from different populations has been studied, data regarding the yield ofC9orf72 compared to an ALS gene panel testing is limited. We aimed to explore the application ofC9orf72 versus a gene panel in the general Israeli population. A total of 140 ALS patients attended our Neurogenetics Clinic throughout 2018 –2023. Disease onset was between ages 60 and 69 years for most patients (34%); however, a ...

Ethical and social implications of public–private partnerships in the context of genomic/big health data collection
In conclusion, this paper offers a set of minimum requirements for these partnerships within solidarity-based publicly funded healthcare systems. These include the necessity of public-private partnerships to (1) contribute to the public benefit and minimise harm produced by the use of publicly held data; (2) avoid prioritisation of commercial interests over robust governance structures to guarantee benefits to the public and protect donors, especially marginalised groups; (3) side-step the pitfalls of the rhetoric of solidarity and be transparent about the challenges to return the benefits to ‘all’.
