Impact of methimazole ‐induced hypothyroidism on postnatal swine
The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of hypothyroidism induced with the antithyroid medication methimazole (MMI). 10  mg/kg MMI significantly decreased circulating triiodothyronine (T3) for the duration of treatment but had only a transient effect on circulating thyroxine (T4). Thyroid tissue weight was significantly increased by more than 3.5-fold in response to MMI treatment. Histologically, the eosinophilic c olloid was largely absent from the thyroid follicle which displayed a disorganized columnar epithelium consistent with goiter. MMI induced hypothyroidism has no effect on growth rate over 28 d...

Changes in biomarkers of the redox status in whole blood and red blood cell lysates in canine hypothyroidism
The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes in the redox status in canine hypothyroidism using whole blood (WB) and red blood cell (RBCs) lysates. For this purpose, a panel of five antioxidants and five oxidants biomarkers was measured in WB and RBCs lysates of 30 dogs with hypothyroidism, 26 dogs with non-thyroidal illnesses and 15 healthy dogs. The antioxidants measured were cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), thiol and paraoxonase type-1 (PON-1). Oxidants measured include the total oxidant status (TOS), peroxi...

Primary Pituitary Abscess: Two Case Reports
Conclusion Pituitary abscess is a rare, potentially life-threatening disorder that may be easily mistaken for other sellar lesions. In this review, we contribute two additional cases of pituitary abscesses to increase awareness and emphasize the importance of proper diagnosis and management. Identification of Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factor 4B as a Novel Candidate Gene for Congenital Hypothyroidism
CONCLUSION: These experimental data supported a role for EIF4B function in the pathogenesis of the hypothyroid phenotype seen in CH patients. Our work indicated that EIF4B was identified as a novel candidate gene in CH. EIF4B is essential for animal survival, but further studies are needed to validate its role in the pathogenesis of CH.PMID:38654471 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae270 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)

Efficacy of a Telemonitoring System as a Complementary Strategy in the Treatment of Patients With Heart Failure: Randomized Clinical Trial
Comput Inform Nurs. 2024 Apr 24. doi: 10.1097/CIN.0000000000001115. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEpisodes of decompensation are the main cause of hospital admissions in patients with heart failure. For this reason, the use of mobile apps emerges as an excellent strategy to improve coverage, real-time monitoring, and timeliness of care. ControlVit is an electronic application for early detection of complications studied within the context of a tertiary university hospital. Patients were randomized to the use of ControlVit versus placebo, during a 6-month follow-up. The primary outcome was the difference in numbers of readm...

Cases: Decompensated Heart Failure Secondary to Hypopituitarism in an Elderly Patient
Intern Med. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.2169/internalmedicine.3491-24. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHypopituitarism is difficult to diagnose because of its non-specific symptoms, especially in the presence of comorbidities. A 77-year-old woman with worsening anorexia and exertional dyspnea was initially diagnosed with decompensated dry cold-type heart failure. Hormonal laboratory tests indicated secondary hypothyroidism as a part of the evaluation of heart failure. Furthermore, pituitary magnetic resonance imaging revealed thickening of the pituitary stalk and a loss of signal intensity in the posterior pituitary, thus suggestin...
