Snakebites in the Americas: a Neglected Problem in Public Health
AbstractPurpose of ReviewWe explored the current priority given to snakebites in 26 countries of the Americas. To describe the epidemiological characteristics of the snakebites in the Americas and the Caribbean, we looked at information collected from epidemiological sources, publications, and available from PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS. In the case of Honduras, some gray literature (theses and conference abstracts) was obtained through local networks. We also aimed at obtaining any reference made in those reports with regard to the most common snake species in the region and their toxin and the physical and mental disabilit...

Cultural Considerations and Response to Trauma for Displaced Children at the Border
The United States has long been the leading destination for Latin Americans seeking refuge. However, in the last 7  years, many children from Mexico and northern Central America, composed of El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, have joined this migratory flow. The experience of forced migration is intense, chronic, and complex for children in their home countries, during their journey, and on arrival in the Un ited States. Their stories can inform clinical practices, such as Psychological First Aid and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, to promote resilience in children in vulnerable conditions. Wood cookstove use is associated with gastric cancer in Central America and mediated by host genetics
Sci Rep. 2023 Oct 2;13(1):16515. doi: 10.1038/s41598-023-42973-7.ABSTRACTBiomass cookstove food preparation is linked to aero-digestive cancers, mediated by ingested and inhaled carcinogens (e.g., heterocyclic amines, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). We investigated the association between gastric adenocarcinoma, wood cookstove use, H. pylori CagA infection and risk modification by variants in genes that metabolize and affect the internal dose of carcinogens. We conducted a population-based, case-control study (814 incident cases, 1049 controls) in rural Honduras, a high-incidence region with a homogeneous diet and e...

The long arm of the gang: Disengagement under gang governance in Central America
This article proposes a new theoretical model of gang disengagement based on a comparative case study with MS-13 and Barrio 18 gangs in Central America. It is based on 112 in-depth interviews with former gang members in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. The article identifies three forms of gang disengagement: religious conversion, secular pass, and walking away. Two factors, the gang's organizational structure and its territorial reach, mediate in the choices gang members have when leaving an institutionalized gang. The specific combination of these factors makes some disengagement modes more likely than others. The a...
