Publication date: Available online 3 April 2018 Source:Evaluation and Program Planning Author(s): Rohan D. Jeremiah, Camille R. Quinn, Jicinta M. Alexis To date, there have been a plethora of punitive and diversion programs to address domestic violence around the world. However, the evaluative scholarship of such programs overwhelmingly reflects studies in developed countries while barely showcasing the realities of addressing domestic violence in developing countries. This paper features a multi-year (2008–2011) evaluation study that measured the fidelity of the United Nations Partnership for Peace (PfP) domestic v...

Profiles and behavioral consequences of child abuse among adolescent girls and boys from Barbados and Grenada.
Abstract The current study used latent class analysis to uncover groups of youths with specific abuse (physical, emotional, and sexual) profiles in and outside the family, and identify how membership in each abuse group is associated with behavioral outcomes. Data were collected among a sample of male (n = 662; Mage = 13.02 years) and female (n = 689; Mage = 12.95 years) children and adolescents (9-17 years old) from Barbados and Grenada. Self-report surveys were completed by participants in school settings. Three latent classes of child abuse were distinguished among boys, including 'low a...

A Possible Link Between Pyriproxyfen and Microcephaly
This study was based upon a small number of cases and ultrasound detection rather than births. Seven cases of microcephaly were reported above background, but only one of them was a birth; the others were detected by ultrasound. The high rate of ultrasound detection is not consistent with observations by ultrasound of microcephaly in other countries, including Colombia. We use the model for French Polynesia as a reference model for comparison with other data in order to clarify which data is or is not consistent with that model. We note that this rate is about 100 times larger than the minimum reported background rate for ...

Twenty-first century cancer patterns in small island nations: Grenada and the English-speaking Caribbean
ConclusionsGiven the small existing cancer infrastructure, excessive mortality in Grenada compared to its neighbors may be disproportionately more attributable to low survival than a high cancer risk. Global solutions will be required to meet the cancer control needs of geographically isolated small nations such as Grenada. (Source: Cancer Causes and Control)

Public health response and lessons learned from the 2014 chikungunya epidemic in Grenada.
Authors: Forde MS, Martin F, Mitchell G, Bidaisee S Abstract In June 2014, the first cases of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) were diagnosed on the island of Carriacou, part of the tri-island state of Grenada. In the three months that followed, CHIKV spread rapidly, with conservative estimates of the population infected of at least 60%. Multiple challenges were encountered in the battle to manage the spread and impact of this high-attack rate virus, including 1) limited indigenous laboratory diagnostic capabilities; 2) an under-resourced health care system; 3) a skeptical general public, hesitant to accept facts...

Incidence and 5-year survival rate for head and neck cancers in Grenada compared to the African American population over the period 1991 –2010
AbstractVery little data exist on the incidence and burden of cancer in the individual Caribbean countries. Some data are available for larger areas, reported under a bigger geographical region; Latin America and the Caribbean, but many of the individual countries are not included. One of the main reasons is a lack of official cancer registries. Data are usually collected from hospital records or private physician records, and since it is not in an official registry, these data are not always accessible for inclusion in databases such as SEER and GLOBOCAN. Grenada is one of the countries that currently does not have a regi...

Gatekeepers ’ perceptions of the quality and availability of services for breast and cervical cancer patients in the English-speaking Windward Islands: an exploratory investigation
ConclusionThe findings of this study emphasize the varying social determinants of health that affect breast and cervical cancer prevention and treatment. It also highlights the disparities in availability of treatment within the wider Caribbean. It is necessary to broaden the perspective on health from a purely biomedical paradigm to a social perspective. (Source: Cancer Causes and Control)
