Genetic and morphologic characterization of diaschistorchis pandus (digenea: pronocephalidae) trematodes extracted from hawksbill turtles, eretmochelys imbricata (testudines: cheloniidae), in grenada, west indies
J Parasitol. 2021 Mar 1;107(2):267-274. doi: 10.1645/20-54.ABSTRACTThe hawksbill turtle Eretmochelys imbricata is a critically endangered species with a worldwide distribution. Limited information is available about the naturally occurring intestinal parasites of this species and what impact these parasites may have on the health of the hawksbill turtle. Diaschistorchis pandus was identified postmortem in 5 hawksbill turtles from Grenada, West Indies, using morphologic characterization. Sanger sequencing was performed for conserved ribosomal regions (5.8S, ITS2, 28S) and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gen...

Sickle cell disease in Grenada: Quality of life and barriers to care
ConclusionThese data provide new insights regarding the experience of living with SCD in Grenada and support the need for further investigations into specific barriers to healthcare delivery, which could also improve education and well ‐being for those affected by SCD in Grenada and in the broader Caribbean community. Omental wrap: Radiographic diagnosis confirmed surgically - Report of two cases in Grenada.
We report two cases of peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter outflow obstruction from our developing PD program in Grenada, in which contrast studies accurately diagnosed omental wrap, allowing for prompt surgical correction. In both cases, the contrast study indicated the presence of omental wrapping, confirmed at time of surgical correction. Radiographic features of omental wrap are distinctive, which allows for reliable differentiation from other causes of obstruction. Radiographic contrast study reliably diagnoses the cause of peritoneal catheter obstruction, permitting prompt diagnosis and treatment. This is vital for reg...

Desiree LaBeaud Children with Congenital Zika Syndrome and microcephaly are at high risk for epilepsy; however, the risk is unclear in normocephalic children with prenatal Zika virus (ZIKV) exposure [Exposed Children (EC)]. In this prospective cohort study, we performed epilepsy screening in normocephal...

Pre and postnatal exposure to  Chikungunya virus does not affect child neurodevelopmental outcomes at two years of age
ConclusionOur findings suggest that children exposed and/or infected with CHIKV outside of the intrapartum period experience no significant neurodevelopmental delay at two years of age, as measured by the INTER-NDA, compared to their unexposed and/or uninfected peers. These results complement those of previous studies which showed a neurodevelopmental risk only for children infected during the intrapartum period, while the mother was highly viremic. These results might be reassuring for women of childbearing age and public health officials in CHIKV-endemic regions. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

GSE149518 miRNA profiles on wild caught mosquitoes in Grenada West Indies
Contributors : Maria E Ramos-Nino ; Daniel Fitzpatrick ; Sonia Cheetham ; Julie A DragonSeries Type : Non-coding RNA profiling by arrayOrganism :Determination of miRNA profiles in most prominent mosquitoes will determine the potential targets for mosquito controlSome of the most medically important viruses, such as dengue virus, West Nile virus, Zika virus, and yellow fever virus, are transmitted by mosquitoes. These aptly named arboviruses impose a tremendous cost to the health of populations around the world. As a result, much effort has gone into the study of the impact of these viruses in human infections. Comparativ...

Phylogenetic relationships and diversity of bat-associated < i > Leptospira < /i > and the histopathological evaluation of these infections in bats from Grenada, West Indies
by Amanda I. Bevans, Daniel M. Fitzpatrick, Diana M. Stone, Brian P. Butler, Maia P. Smith, Sonia Cheetham Bats can harbor zoonotic pathogens, but their status as reservoir hosts forLeptospira bacteria is unclear. During 2015 –2017, kidneys from 47 of 173 bats captured in Grenada, West Indies, tested PCR-positive forLeptospira. Sequence analysis of theLeptospira rpoB gene from 31 of the positive samples showed 87 –91% similarity to knownLeptospira species. Pairwise and phylogenetic analysis of sequences indicate that bats from Grenada harbor as many as eight undescribedLeptospira genotypes that are most similar to kno...
