Sunday Sermonette: They don't teach this in Sunday school
And you aren ' t likely to hear a sermon preached on it either. Before we get to the really weird shit, a reminder that Mephibosheth is Jonathan ' s son and Saul ' s grandson, who was dropped by his nurse and made lame. David brought him to Jerusalem and gave him an estate. Mephibosheth ' s son is Micah, and apparently that ' s who David inquires after; but why Micah ' s defection to Absalom costs Mephibosheth is estate is not explained. The second incident is also a bit mysterious. David decides to put up with a guy cursing him and throwing rocks at his party. Basically, David says " Who cares, that ' s the least of our wo...

In conclusion, this first examination of the effects of age and the ageing process on the small intestinal microbiome demonstrates that the duodenal microbiome changes with increasing age, with significant decreases in duodenal microbial diversity due to increased prevalence of phylum Proteobacteria, particularly coliforms and anaerobic taxa. Given the key roles of small intestinal microbes in nutrient absorption and host metabolism, these changes may be clinically relevant for human health during the ageing process. A Caution Not to Forget the Continued Need for Fundamental Research into Aging
A growing longevity industry is picking up ongoing academic projects in increasing numbers and working towards the clinical availability of therapies to treat aging. Amidst all the light and noise, one of the researchers in the field here asks for us not to overlook the need for more fundamental research. I agree, though I'd say that the most important portion of research not to be overlooked are the projects in the SENS rejuvenation biotechnology portfolio yet to make it to enthusiastic commercial development. To my eyes, the fastest way to find out more about how aging works is to implement and test specific rejuvenation...

In this study, we used accelerometer measurements (1) to examine the association of physical activity and mortality in a population-based sample of US adults and (2) to estimate the number of deaths prevented annually with modest increases in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) intensity. This analysis included 4,840 participants. Increasing MVPA by 10, 20, or 30 minutes per day was associated with a 6.9%, 13.0%, and 16.9% decrease in the number of deaths per year, respectively. We estimated that approximately 110,000 deaths per year could be prevented if US adults aged 40 to 85 years or older increased th...

Ecology and Technical Advance
By MIKE MAGEE It is fair to say that the vast majority of Americans know more about viruses today than they did 24 months ago. The death and destruction in the wake of COVID-19 and its progeny have been a powerful motivator. Fear and worry tend to focus one’s attention. Our collective learnings are evolving. We have already seen historic comparisons to other epidemics. Just search “The 10 worst epidemics” for confirmation. But one critical area which has been skimmed over, and only delicately probed (if at all) is the ecology or “the ecological point of view.” For those interested, let me recommend “Na...

Be Extraordinary or Be Dead
Ordinary people don't pay much attention to the science of aging. Ordinary people don't keep an eye on the longevity industry or read scientific papers or donate funds to non-profits supporting important research. Ordinary people don't carefully and rationally self-experiment with plausible age-slowing interventions while measuring outcomes. Ordinary people are not signed up for cryopreservation. Ordinary people are not trying to gain access to new medical therapies a decade in advance of approval by regulators, or after approval but well before widespread availability. One could say much the same for ordinary high net wor...

The Social Science of Covid
By MIKE MAGEE As we enter the third year of the Covid pandemic, with perhaps a partial end in sight, the weight of the debate shows signs of shifting away from genetically engineered therapies, and toward a social science search for historic context. Renowned historian, Charles E. Rosenberg, envisioned a similar transition for the AIDS epidemic in 1989. He described its likely future course then as a “social phenomenon” with these words, “Epidemics start at a moment in time, proceed on a stage limited in space and duration, follow a plot line of increasing and revelatory tension, move to a crisis of individual ...

7 Ways to Create a Healthier Environment for Your Mental Stability
Picture from Pexels  Mental health is a common problem for many individuals, globally. Most people have no idea that they have mental health issues but move on everyday just like a typical day. These issues arise from workplaces, homes, or interactions with people or activities that stress your mind. According to a study, poor mental health causes about 14 percent of all deaths worldwide and increases the mortality rate by 2.2 percent compared to individuals doing well mentally. Thirty percent of all grownups experience mental health issues at some point in their lives, with the large number among this set com...

In conclusion, senolytic drugs have shown promising results in the elimination of senescent cells and in alleviating various diseases in animal models. However, in patients, there is a paucity in data on the efficacy and safety of senotherapeutics from clinical trials, including systemic effects and side-effects. In this regard it is important to assess the specificity of senolytics in killing targeted senescent cells and their cytotoxic effects, to identify reliable markers for intervention responses, to elucidate interactions with comorbidities and other drugs, and to standardise administration protocols. FOXO3...

Medicare Advantage Is a Superior Program (Part two)
By GEORGE HALVORSON Former Kaiser Permanente CEO George Halvorson has written on THCB on and off over the years, most notably with his proposal for Medicare Advantage for All post-COVID. He wrote a piece in Health Affairs last week arguing with the stance of Medicare Advantage of Don Berwick and Rick Gilfillan (Here’s their piece pt1, pt2). Here’s a longer exposition of his argument. We published part one last week so please read that first. This is part two – Matthew Holt Medicare Advantage is better for the underserved The African American and Hispanic communities who were particularl...

Request for Startups in the Rejuvenation Biotechnology Space, 2022 Edition
For some years now, I've offered a yearly set of suggested projects for new startups in the rejuvenation biotechnology space. Or, alternatively, it might be viewed as a series of lengthy complaints about the slow pace of process towards human rejuvenation, given the many opportunities that exist. That slow pace is particularly galling in the case of the lowest-hanging fruit, a range of therapies that have been practical to carry out for at least a few years now, and yet have still not been meaningfully assessed for their ability to produce at least some degree of rejuvenation in aged humans. Given that the level of funding...

80 Actions Speak Louder Than Words Quotes to Kickstart Your Motivation
It’s so easy to get stuck in thinking. In talking about what you want to do. In dreaming. To a large part simply because it's easier than taking action and step by step keep moving forward to achieve your tasks, goals and dreams. The inner resistance towards taking action is most often there. And the fear of failing can also hold you back. My weekly go-to when it feels hard to take action towards my own goals is to… Break what I need to do into smaller steps. Steps that only take 5-10 minutes to complete. Then I focus on just the first of those small steps until I have completed it. If the inner resistance is extr...

Eating Raw in 2021 (Recap)
Happy New Year! Since I ate mostly raw for 2021 – so many salads! – I can go back to eating more cooked food today. Oddly I feel less motivated to do that than I expected. I fell into some very simple eating habits centered around fruit and salads, and that worked well for me. I’m sure I ate more greens this year than in any previous year. I got really good at making salads that I like. There are a lot of foods that I haven’t eaten since 2020, such as pizza. I look forward to trying them again, but that feels more like intellectual curiosity than any sort of craving. I feel like my cravings for ce...
