New Study Sheds Light On The Link Between Antidepressants And Birth Defects
A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that pregnant women who take certain drugs that are part of a class of antidepressants known as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are at slightly increased risk for having a baby with birth defects.  While this sounds frightening, the absolute risk for birth defects is still very low, cautioned study authors. For instance, women who took Paxil (paroxetine) would increase their risk for giving birth to a baby with anencephaly (a serious and often fatal brain and skull defect) from two per 10,000 to seven per 10,000. For a certain heart ...

Non-controlled and over-the-counter drugs of abuse
2.5 out of 5 stars Abuse of Medications That Theoretically Are Without Abuse Potential. Reeves RR et al. South Med J 2015 Mar;108:151-157. Abstract This review of noncontrolled prescription and over-the-counter drugs that can be and have been abused for non-medical or recreational purposes is rather sketchy and anecdotal (as the authors admit,) but nevertheless contains some useful information. Medication and Anxiety
Medication can be an effective approach for managing various types of anxiety such as panic, hyperarousal, and constant worry. However, contrary to popular belief and subtle messages from pharmaceutical companies, medication is far from a cure. In fact, when it comes to “cures” for most psychiatric conditions, the data tends to support psychotherapy. For example, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) responds very well to psychotherapy, whereas the positive effects of medication are somewhat limited. The same is true for panic disorder. Although certain types of medication are very good at relieving panic sympt...

Common anticholinergic drugs like Benadryl linked to increased dementia risk
This study is another reminder to periodically evaluate the all drugs you’re taking. Look at each one to determine if it’s really helping,” says Dr. Sarah Berry, a geriatrician and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. “I’ve seen people who have been on anticholinergic medications for bladder control for years and they are completely incontinent. These drugs obviously aren’t helping.” Many drugs have a stronger effect on older people than younger people. With age, the kidneys and liver clear drugs more slowly, so drug levels in the blood remain higher for a lon...

Why Depression Is Underreported In Men
By Mary Elizabeth Dallas Depression is often seen as a problem mainly affecting women. Ironically, that’s one of the reasons why the condition is underreported among men, according to Amit Anand, M.D., a professor of medicine at the Cleveland Clinic's Lerner College of Medicine and vice-chair of research at its Center for Behavioral Health. Although women are 70 percent more likely than men to have depression, more than 6 million men in the United States struggle with the condition each year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. However, several obstacles prevent many of them from seeking treatment, A...

Psychopharmacology Problem Solving: Principles & Practices to Get It Right
A longstanding debate in the field of psychology is whether or not psychologists — specifically, PhDs and PsyDs who serve in a clinical capacity — should, like psychiatrists (who have MDs), be able to prescribe medication. At present, two states permit prescriptive authority for appropriately trained psychologists: New Mexico and Louisiana, with more states on the horizon for approval. That authority is monitored under the supervision of a psychiatrist or other qualified practicing medical physician. Meanwhile, the American Psychological Association (APA), while it supports prescriptive authority for clinical psych...
