Unraveling Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome type 7: a case report and comprehensive literature review on the identification of < em > DTNBP1 < /em > variants
CONCLUSION: This work highlights the genetic complexity of HPS-7 and emphasizes the importance of genetic testing in the diagnosis of this rare disorder. The identification of a rare pathogenic variant expands our understanding of HPS-7 genetics and suggests a possible founder effect in the Portuguese population.PMID:38097925 | DOI:10.1080/13816810.2023.2291670 (Source: Ophthalmic Genetics)

Meta-analysis of efficacy and safety of bevacizumab in the treatment of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia epistaxis
Conclusion: Bevacizumab is superior to the control group in the treatment of HHT epistaxis, and adverse reactions are not further increased in the bevacizumab group than in the control group, suggesting that bevacizumab has clinical value in the treatment of HHT epistaxis. Using simulation as a platform to prepare for ear, nose and throat emergencies in the coronavirus disease 2019 era and beyond
CONCLUSION: Preparing healthcare professionals adequately is essential to enhancing patient safety. This simulation course has been effective in supporting new doctors in ENT and has subsequently been rolled out at a national level.PMID:38073419 | DOI:10.1017/S0022215123001597 (Source: Journal of Laryngology and Otology)

Pro-angiogenic changes of T-helper lymphocytes in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia
Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare inherited disease due to heterozygous loss-of-function mutations on the BMP9/10 pathway (ENG, ACVRL1 or MADH4 mainly). HHT endothelial cells are prone to lose their quiescence, leading to progressive appearance of numerous telangiectases on skin and mucosa (complicated by epistaxis and anemia), and to larger arteriovenous malformations in lungs, liver and brain. HHT is also associated with T lymphocyte abnormalities, which are currently poorly understood. We quantified by flow-cytometry the main T lymphocyte circulating subsets in 40 HHT patients and 20 matched healthy ...

The whole-blood Epstein-Barr virus DNA can serve as a valuable molecular marker for diagnosis and prognosis prediction of nasopharyngeal carcinoma
This study aims to explore the diagnostic and prognostic value of EBV-DNA for NPC in a non-endemic region of China. We enrolled patients with chronic active EBV infection (CAEBV), nasopharyngitis (NA), extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTCL-NT), and NPC. Demographic and clinical data were collected and the diagnostic and prognostic values of EBV-DNA were analyzed. Immunohistochemistry was performed to detect EBV-encoded small ribonucleic acids (EBER), as well as the expression of p53, Ki-67, and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). The levels of pretreatment Epstein-Barr virus DNA (preEBV-DNA) in new NPC cas...

Case 3: aggressive tumor presenting as chronic sinusitus and odontogenic infection.
A 47-year-old female presented to the Emergency Department (ED) for evaluation of suspected odontogenic sinusitis. She reported a several-month history of sinus congestion with recent onset of intermittent epistaxis from the right nostril, swelling in the right maxilla, and severe pain of the right cheek. The pain radiated to the head and interfered with sleep. The patient incidentally tested positive for COVID-19 during her ED stay.Prior to the ED visit, the patient had dental interventions in the right posterior maxillary area.
