Usefulness of nasal cavity evaluation before high-resolution esophageal manometry in high-risk patients
CONCLUSIONS: To reduce the risk of adverse events and test failure during HRM, a site-specific questionnaire to evaluate nasal obstruction might be helpful. When nasal obstruction is suspected, objective nasal cavity evaluation could be recommended for the safe and successful performance of HRM.PMID:38031365 | DOI:10.3904/kjim.2023.266 (Source: The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine)

Understanding hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia: From genetic anomalies to systemic manifestations, quality of life, and epistaxis management —Exploring the otolaryngologist's integral role
Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), also known as Osler –Rendu–Weber syndrome, is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by vascular malformations. This comprehensive review aimed to provide an overview and summarize various aspects of HHT, including the genetic abnormalities, complications associated with visceral arteriovenous malformatio ns (AVMs), prognosis of HHT, quality of life (QOL), and treatment of epistaxis. In addition, this review highlights the challenges in diagnosing HHT and emphasizes the critical role of otolaryngologists in the early detection of HHT. (Source: Auris, Nasus, Larynx)

Treatments of Epistaxis in Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia: Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis
AbstractPurpose of ReviewTo analyze and compare the effects of epistaxis treatments for Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT) patients.Recent FindingsOf total of 21 randomized controlled trials (RCT), the data from 15 RCTs (697 patients, 7 treatments: timolol, propranolol, bevacizumab, doxycycline, tacrolimus, estriol/estradiol, and tranexamic acid) were pooled for the meta-analyses while the other 6 studies (treatments: electrosurgical plasma coagulation, KTP laser, postoperative packing, tamoxifen, sclerosing agent, and estriol) were reviewed qualitatively. When compared to placebo, propranolol offered the most imp...

Varicella-associated disseminated intravascular coagulation secondary to Henoch-Sch önlein purpura with renal and gastrointestinal system involvement in a child: A case report
Medicine (Baltimore). 2023 Nov 17;102(46):e36203. doi: 10.1097/MD.0000000000036203.ABSTRACTRATIONALE: Immunocompromised patients who developed varicella-zoster virus (VZV)-associated disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) previously included recipients of bone marrow, hematopoietic stem cell, or organ transplantations, patients with primary nephropathy receiving corticosteroid therapy, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, and patients with human immune deficiency virus infection. The case reported here is novel because, to our knowledge, there has been no report of VZV-associated DIC after the onset of Henoch-Sch...

Management of pseudoaneurysms of the internal maxillary artery derived from orthognathic surgery based on one case
ConclusionPseudoaneurysms derived from external carotid artery branches must be suspected when patients show multiple episodes of bleeding (epistaxis or through the surgical approach) within the first two weeks after orthognathic surgery. If so, vascular CT or angiography should be performed to rule out the presence of vascular injuries. In case a pseudoaneurysm is identified, vascular embolization with N-butyl-cyanoacrylate seems to be the best treatment if available. If this treatment is not available or bleeding cannot be controlled, surgical ligature of the injured vessel is a valid treatment. (Source: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Hemophilia A and factor V deficiency in a girl with Turner syndrome: a case report
ConclusionsIn females affected with hemophilia, karyotyping should be performed. It is very important not to exclude the possibility of a combination of deficiency of more than one clotting factor, and to note that deficiency of more than one factor does not necessarily increase the severity of bleeding compared with deficiency of a single factor. Sinonasal Burkitt Lymphoma in a 2-Year-Old Child: An Uncommon Case Report
We present the case of a 2-year-old boy who presented with a 2-month history of nasal obstruction, snoring, and epistaxis followed by a recent dyspnea. Examination revealed a protruding tissue mass in the left nasal cavity. Computed tomography scan showed a homogenous soft-tissue mass in the left nasal cavity extending toward the ipsilateral orbit, infratemporal fossa, nasopharynx, as well as the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a homogenous infiltrating mass with a hypo-intense signal on T2-weighted images reaching the infratemporal fossa and oropharynx. Biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of ...
