Executive summary of the 14th HHT international scientific conference
AbstractHereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT) is an autosomal dominant vascular disorder characterized by small, dilated clustered vessels (telangiectasias) and by larger visceral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), which directly connect the feeding arteries with the draining veins. These lesions are fragile, prone to rupture, and lead to recurrent epistaxis and/or internal hemorrhage among other complications. Germline heterozygous loss-of-function (LOF) mutations in Bone Morphogenic Protein 9 (BMP9) and BMP10 signaling pathway genes (endoglin-ENG, activin like kinase 1ACVRL1 akaALK1, andSMAD4) cause different subt...

Effect of ambient temperature and respiration rate on nasal dominance: preliminary findings from a nostril-specific wearable
The nasal dominance (ND) determination is crucial for nasal synchronized ventilator, optimum nasal drug delivery, identifying brain hemispheric dominance, nasal airway obstruction surgery, mindfulness breathing, and for possible markers of a conscious state. Given these wider applications of ND, it is interesting to understand the patterns of ND with varying temperature and respiration rates. In this paper, we propose a method which measures peak-to-peak temperature oscillations (difference between end-expiratory and end-inspiratory temperature) for the left and right nostrils during nasal breathing. These nostril-specific...

Management and risk of postoperative bleeding in patients with low-dose antiplatelet aspirin medication during endoscopic endonasal surgery for pituitary adenomas
ConclusionShort-term discontinuation of low-dose aspirin was not associated with increased rate of postoperative bleeding in patients, who underwent EETS for treatment of PA. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)

The incidence and risk factors of unplanned reoperation in endoscopic endonasal surgeries: a single center study
AbstractThe incidence of unplanned reoperation after surgery during the same hospitalization is considered one of most important evaluation indicators for health care quality. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and risk factors related to unplanned reoperation after an endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA). All patients who underwent elective endoscopic endonasal surgery from January 2016 to December 2021 in the Department of Neurosurgery, Tangdu Hospital, Air Force Military Medical University, were included. We identified the patients who underwent an unplanned reoperation and those who did not and div...

Predictive factors for decreased baseline quality of life in patients with sinonasal malignancies
ConclusionsOur findings demonstrate a negative impact on baseline QOL in patients with SNMs and suggest sex-specific and symptom-related lower QOL scores, with minimal histopathology association. Anatomical tumor involvement may be more reflective of QOL than T-staging, as orbital and skull base erosion, PNI, and palate lesions are significantly associated with reduced baseline QOL. A Phase 2 Trial of Rivoceranib, an Oral Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor 2 Inhibitor, for Recurrent or Metastatic Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with progressing R/M ACC, rivoceranib demonstrated anti-tumor activity and a manageable safety profile consistent with other VEGFR TKIs.PMID:37643133 | DOI:10.1158/1078-0432.CCR-23-1030 (Source: Clinical Cancer Research)

Molecular and clinical characterization of two unrelated families with factor V deficiency, including a novel nonsense variant (p.Gln1532*)
CONCLUSION: These three mutations are responsible for the FV-deficient in two pedigrees. Moreover, the nonsense variant p.Gln1532* is first reported in the world.PMID:37639740 | DOI:10.1016/j.bcmd.2023.102794 (Source: Blood Cells, Molecules and Diseases)

Closure of Nasal Septal Perforations Using a Diced Cartilage in Fascia Graft
The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of using a diced cartilage in fascia (DC-F) graft for successful closure of nasal septal perforations and to evaluate symptom reduction. This was a retrospective study of 18 patients undergoing surgical repair of symptomatic nasoseptal perforations of different etiologies using a DC-F graft from 2020 until 2021. The procedure was feasible in all of the 18 patients. Reconstruction of septal defects with a DC-F graft led to reduction of crust formation, reduction of epistaxis, and improvement of nasal breathing in 13 out of the 18 patients when seen for their 2-month ...

Paranasal Schwannomas: A Comprehensive Study of 2 Cases
This study presents 2 cases of paranasal schwannomas, detailing their clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, and treatment approaches. Both patients underwent endoscopic sinus surgery with successful tumor excision and had no significant complications or recurrences during follow-up. Diagnosis was based on a combination of clinical examination, radiological imaging (computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging), and histopathological confirmation with immunohistochemical staining. Treatment consisted primarily of endonasal resection, with consideration of frontal craniotomy if necessary. This study aims to contri...
