Prospective study of hepatitis B and D epidemiology and risk factors in Romania: A 10-year update
CONCLUSION: This study shows that HDV infection among those with HBV remains endemic in Romania and updates our understanding of HDV epidemiology and associated risk factors. It emphasizes the need for systematic screening for HDV infection and collaborative initiatives for controlling and preventing HBV and HDV infection.PMID:38689751 | PMC:PMC11056896 | DOI:10.4254/wjh.v16.i4.640 (Source: World Journal of Hepatology)

Subclinical hepatitis E virus genotype 1 infection: The concept of "dynamic human reservoir"
World J Hepatol. 2024 Apr 27;16(4):506-510. doi: 10.4254/wjh.v16.i4.506.ABSTRACTHepatitis E virus (HEV) is hyperendemic in South Asia and Africa accounting for half of total Global HEV burden. There are eight genotypes of HEV. Among them, the four common ones known to infect humans, genotypes 1 and 2 are prevalent in the developing world and genotypes 3 and 4 are causing challenge in the industrialized world. Asymptomatic HEV viremia in the general population, especially among blood donors, has been reported in the literature worldwide. The clinical implications related to this asymptomatic viremia are unclear and need fur...

Innate immune activation restricts priming and protective efficacy of the radiation-attenuated PfSPZ malaria vaccine
JCI Insight. 2024 Apr 30:e167408. doi: 10.1172/jci.insight.167408. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA systems analysis was conducted to determine the potential molecular mechanisms underlying differential immunogenicity and protective efficacy results of a clinical trial of the radiation-attenuated whole sporozoite PfSPZ Vaccine in African infants. Innate immune activation and myeloid signatures at pre-vaccination baseline correlated with protection from Pf parasitemia in placebo controls. These same signatures were associated with susceptibility to parasitemia among infants who received the highest and most protective PfSPZ ...

Ocular Brugia pahangi Filariasis Complicated by Severe Macular Damage in Thailand: Case Report and Literature Review
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2024 Apr 30:tpmd240047. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.24-0047. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExtralymphatic filariasis caused by filaria of zoonotic origins has been frequently reported in Thailand over recent years. Here, we report the first case of ocular filariasis in a 7.5-year-old Thai boy who initially presented with progressive conjunctival redness and blurred vision in his right eye. A small, slender, coiled worm was found and surgically removed from the right anterior chamber. Histopathological examination illustrated predominant eosinophilic inflammation surrounding the parasite, which showed smooth and t...

Cholera and diarrheal diseases in Cuamba District, Niassa Province, Mozambique: Systematic healthcare facility-based surveillance strengthening, characteristics of suspected cholera and diarrheal patients, and incidence of diarrheal diseases
Conclusion/SignificanceEfforts were made to strengthen the systematic surveillance of suspected cholera with standardised patient screening, enrolment, and diagnostics. The first basic microbiology laboratory in Niassa Province established in Cuamba District under the MOCA project needs to be integrated into the national network of laboratories for sustainability. No reports of laboratory confirmed cholera cases from the surveillance catchment area may be highly related to the pre-emptive oral cholera vaccine (OCV) mass vaccination campaign conducted in 2018 and the use of drugs by local populations prior to visiting the s...

Prevalence, risk factors and outcomes of secondary infections among hospitalised patients with COVID-19 or post-COVID-19 conditions in Victoria, 2020-2023
The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a high burden of disease worldwide and was a major challenge for healthcare service delivery. The strain on health services and other associated healthcare risks observed during the COVID-19 pandemic provide great learnings for managing COVID-19 in its current endemic phase as well as for other similar respiratory conditions [1]. Secondary infections during COVID-19 have been reported since the beginning of the pandemic and are also a feature of other respiratory infections [2]. Comparison of Intralesional Sodium Stibogluconate versus Intralesional Meglumine Antimoniate for the Treatment of Leishmania major Cutaneous Leishmaniasis
In conclusion, the 2 different medications have the same efficacy and safety for treating cutaneous leishmaniasis. Pentavalent antimoniate intralesional infiltration treatment is safe, effective, and well tolerated with minimal side effects for Old-World cutaneous leishmaniasis.PMID:38682801 | DOI:10.2340/actadv.v104.35089 (Source: Acta Dermato-Venereologica)

Profile of metacaspase gene expression in Plasmodium vivax field isolates from the Brazilian Amazon
CONCLUSION: The detection of metacaspases in P. vivax blood-stage parasites reported herein, allows the inclusion of these proteases as a potential candidate drug target for vivax malaria, while further investigations are still required to evaluate the activity, role and essentiality of metacaspases in P. vivax biology.PMID:38683374 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09538-x (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)
