Systematic overview of hepatitis C infection in the Middle East and North Africa.
CONCLUSION: A substantial proportion of the reported outcomes may not help policymakers to develop micro-elimination strategies with precise HCV infection prevention and treatment programs in the region, as nowcasting HCV epidemiology using these data is potentially difficult. In addition to providing accurate information on HCV epidemiology, outcomes should also demonstrate practical and clinical significance and relevance. Based on the available data, most countries in the region have low to moderate anti-HCV prevalence. To achieve HCV elimination by 2030, up-to-date, good quality data on HCV epidemiology are required fo...

The effect of excess iodine intake from iodized salt and/or groundwater iodine on thyroid function in non-pregnant and pregnant women, infants and children: a multicenter study in East Africa.
Conclusions Although iodine intakes were excessive and Tg concentrations were elevated, there was little impact on thyroid function. Chronic excess iodine intakes thus appear to be well-tolerated by women, infants and children. However, such high iodine intakes are unnecessary and should be avoided. Careful evaluation of contributions from both iodized salt and groundwater iodine is recommended before any review of iodization policy is considered. What specific modes of internationalization influence SME innovation in Sub-Saharan least developed countries (LDCs)?
Publication date: Available online 31 May 2018Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Yazid Abdullahi Abubakar, Chris Hand, David Smallbone, George SaridakisAbstractSmall and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) located in the least developed countries (LDCs), operate in distinctively hostile institutional environments compared to those in developed economies. Better understanding of the determinants of SME innovation in such environments is important for the development of private sector in LDCs, because innovative SMEs are crucial for sustainable economic growth. Yet, determinants of SME innovation in LDCs have hardly been studied. Co...

Review of the nutrition situation in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
Authors: Nasreddine L, Ayoub JJ, Al Jawaldeh A Abstract This situation analysis for the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean Region focuses on specific nutrition indicators, namely low birth weight, exclusive breastfeeding, under- and overnutrition (anthropometric indicators) and anaemia. The regional average prevalence of low birth weight and exclusive breastfeeding was estimated at 19.31% and 29.3%, respectively. Stunting, wasting and underweight had an average prevalence of 28%, 8.69% and 18%, respectively. Afghanistan, Djibouti, Pakistan, Sudan and Yemen had the highest burden of stunting (&...

Power in participatory processes: reflections from multi-stakeholder workshops in the Horn of Africa
This article draws on the critical tradition of political science and sociology to examine how power dynamics are inherent to, and should always be a concern during, participatory processes. This also applies for sustainability science research and the implementation of sustainable development projects, especially in developing contexts such as those of Africa. While local participation enhances the voices of local stakeholders, power dynamics between them and the researchers driving these processes can dampen local voices or elide critical pieces of information. Using evidence from participatory workshops in Djibouti and ...

Thromboelastographic study of the snakebite-related coagulopathy in Djibouti
Hemostasis disorders are one of the major clinical conditions of snakebites and are because of mechanisms which may disrupt vessels, platelets, clotting factors and fibrinolysis. Thromboelastography (TEG) could help to understand these effects in the clinical practice. A retrospective study reports a series of patients presenting a snakebite-related coagulopathy, treated with antivenom and monitored with conventional tests and TEG in a French military treatment facility (Republic of Djibouti, East Africa) between August 2011 and September 2013. Conventional coagulation assays (platelets, prothrombin time, activated partial...

[Articles] A cluster of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis among patients arriving in Europe from the Horn of Africa: a molecular epidemiological study
Our data suggest that source cases are linked to an M tuberculosis clone circulating in northern Somalia or Djibouti and that transmission probably occurred en route before arrival in Europe. We hypothesise that the shared mutation of tlyA is a drug resistance mutation and phylogenetic marker, the first of its kind in M tuberculosis sensu stricto. (Source: The Lancet Infectious Diseases)

First Wave of the 2016-17 Cholera Outbreak in Hodeidah City, Yemen – Acf Experience and Lessons Learned
Discussion Timeliness of the intervention Our intervention started around two weeks after the first cholera cases were confirmed. However, this was already after the peak of the epicurve. This delay highlights the need to strengthen preparedness, including early detection and prompt response. Case definition Thanks to the Hodeidah central laboratory, eight cholera cases were officially confirmed in Al Hali, Al Hawak and Al Mina, during calendar week 42 in 2016.19 According to the WHO Standard case definition of cholera,20 all “AWD cases aged 5 years or more” should have been counted as suspected cases fro...

Acquired Idiopathic True Transverse Leukonychia.
Abstract A 34-year-old man from Djibouti presented with a 14-year history of relapsing and remitting transverse white bands on the fingernails with sparing of the toenails. Examination revealed several transverse, white bands following the contour of the lunula on seven of his fingernails that did not fade upon compression of the digits (Figure). There was no onycholysis. No other skin lesions were noted. The patient reported having lived for 4 years (2000-2004) in a house that had well water as its primary water supply. This 4-year period was a stressful point in our patient's life. During that time, he h...

Health production and determinants of health systems performance in WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region.
Authors: Pourreza A, Alipour V, Arabloo J, Bayati M, Ahadinezhad B Abstract This descriptive-analytical study used data envelopment analysis to evaluated the technical efficiency (TE) of health systems in Member States of the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean Region during 2004-2011. Life expectancy and infant mortality were used as outputs. Per capita total expenditure on health, and number of physicians, nurses and midwives and hospital beds per 1000 people were used as inputs. The determinants of TE of the health systems were examined using a regression model. United Arab Emirates and Soma...
