Urban Chikungunya in the Middle East and North Africa: A systematic review
Conclusions / SignificanceSeroprevalence studies and outbreak reports suggest endemic transmission of urban cycle CHIKV in at least the Red Sea region and Pakistan. However, indications of seroprevalence despite a low quantity of CHIKV epidemiologic research from the region suggests that CHIKV transmission is currently underrecognized. Alkhurma Hemorrhagic Fever Virus
Publication date: Available online 26 April 2017 Source:Microbes and Infection Author(s): Jaffar A. Al-Tawfiq, Ziad A. Memish Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever virus (AHFV) was first isolated in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in the 1990s from the blood of a butcher. Subsequently, the virus was recognized in many patients in Saudi Arabia and rarely from Egypt and Djibouti. In this review, we summarize the current literature on AHFV globally with special focus on Saudi Arabia. (Source: Microbes and Infection)

[Point-of-care tests for the rapid diagnosis of shigellosis].
Authors: Haddar C, Begaud E, Maslin J, Germani Y Abstract Worldwide, it is estimated that 140 million people suffer from shigellosis annually. The traditional identification of Shigella spp. by culture lacks sensitivity. Rapid diagnosis of shigellosis is important because it allows to engage appropriate antimicrobial treatment that shortens the duration and severity of the illness and reduces microbial carriage, thus the spread of infection in the community. Onestep immunochromatographic dipstick tests have been successfully developed at Institut Pasteur for Shigella spp., Shigella flexneri 2a, Shigella so...

Forensic data and microvariant sequence characterization of 27 Y-STR loci analyzed in four Eastern African countries
Publication date: Available online 29 December 2016 Source:Forensic Science International: Genetics Author(s): Giuseppe Iacovacci, Eugenia D’Atanasio, Ornella Marini, Alfredo Coppa, Daniele Sellitto, Beniamino Trombetta, Andrea Berti, Fulvio Cruciani By using the recently introduced 6-dye Yfiler® Plus multiplex, we analyzed 462 males belonging to 20 ethnic groups from four eastern African countries (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya). Through a Y-STR sequence analysis, combined with 62 SNP-based haplogroup information, we were able to classify observed microvariant alleles at four Y-STR loci as either mono...

Consumption of fruits and vegetables among adolescents: a multi-national comparison of eleven countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
This study examines the prevalence of and differences in consumption of F&V ≥5 times/d among adolescents in eleven EMR countries, and describes differences in the proportions of taking F&V ≥5 times/d by sex, age and BMI. The study included 26 328 school adolescents (13-15 years) with complete data on consumption of F&V, age, sex, weight and height taken from the Global School-based Student Health Survey conducted in the EMR between 2005 and 2009. Overall, only 19·4 % of adolescents reported consuming F&V ≥5 times/d. The highest prevalence was reported in Djibouti (40·4 %) and the lowest was reported...

Endovascular treatment of brachiocephalic artery war-related injury.
We reported the case of a 28-year-old Yemenite soldier who presented with a shrapnel-related chest puncture wound following a shell explosion in Djibouti causing a 5 mm pseudoaneurysm of the innominate artery without associated complications. After medical repatriation to France, the pseudoaneurysm was treated by endovascular exclusion using a covered stent. DISCUSSION: Endovascular treatment of supra-aortic trunk lesions is an alternative to surgery with fewer postoperative complications, but long-term follow-up is lacking. Conservation Status of Long-Finned Pilot Whales, Globicephala melas, in the Mediterranean Sea.
Abstract Mediterranean Sea long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) are currently classified as Data Deficient on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Multiple lines of evidence, including molecular genetic and photo-identification mark-recapture analyses, indicate that the Strait of Gibraltar population (distributed from 5.8°W longitude to west of Djibouti Bank and Alborán Dorsal in the Alborán Sea) is differentiated from the Mediterranean Sea population (east of Djibouti Bank and the Alborán Dorsal up to the Ligurian Sea). There is low genetic diversity within ...

Prevalence of Primary HPV in Djibouti: Feasibility of Screening for Early Diagnosis of Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions
Conclusions: The HPV prevalence shows a curve by age similar to that of other African countries. The proportion of HPV16 is among the lowest ever seen in similar studies. The findings suggest to Djibouti the choice of a strategy of screening that includes forms of cytological triage, thus limiting recourse to colposcopy. Health in times of uncertainty in the eastern Mediterranean region, 1990 –2013: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013
The objective of this study was to present the burden of diseases, injuries, and risk factors in the eastern Mediterranean region as of 2013. Methods GBD 2013 includes an annual assessment covering 188 countries from 1990 to 2013. The study covers 306 diseases and injuries, 1233 sequelae, and 79 risk factors. Our GBD 2013 analyses included the addition of new data through updated systematic reviews and through the contribution of unpublished data sources from collaborators, an updated version of modelling software, and several improvements in our methods. In this systematic analysis, we use data from GBD 2013 to analyse t...

Projected Zika Virus Importation and Subsequent Ongoing Transmission after Travel to the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games - Country-Specific Assessment, July 2016.
Abstract Zika virus belongs to the genus Flavivirus of the family Flaviviridae; it is transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (e.g., Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus) (1). Zika virus has been identified as a cause of congenital microcephaly and other serious brain defects (2). As of June 30, 2016, CDC had issued travel notices for 49 countries and U.S. territories across much of the Western hemisphere (3), including Brazil, where the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games (Games of the XXXI Olympiad, also known as Rio 2016; Games) will be hosted in Rio de Janeiro in ...

How Bad Is It? Usefulness of the “7eed Model” for Scoring Severity and Level of Need in Complex Emergencies
Discussion Our assessments indicate that the 7eed model is based on indicators with a value that is readily available, provides scores that vary among countries and over time, and in addition, reliably captures levels of severity. The developed heat maps visually illustrate the severity and the variation among countries. They show that both vulnerability and exposure together form the severity of a CE, while the scoring provides measurable comparisons that can support needs based decision-making. The results in figure 7 show a high correlation between excess mortality and severity score, which indicates that the model ...
