Systematic review and meta-analysis of the management of acute uncomplicated diverticulitis: time to change traditional practice
ConclusionObservation-only treatment is feasible and safe in selected clinically stable patients with uncomplicated acute diverticulitis (Hinchey 1a classification). It may provide better outcomes including decreased length of hospital stay. Moreover, the OP approach in treating patients with Hinchey 1a acute diverticulitis is comparable to IP management. Future high-quality randomised controlled studies are needed to understand the outcomes of the NABX approach used in an OP setting in managing patients with uncomplicated acute diverticulitis. Diverticular disease
Colonic diverticula are formed by mucosal outpouching from the colonic wall. Their presence increases with increasing age, with most, white patients, being situated in the left colon. The aetiology of these outpouchings is not fully understood but dietary, lifestyle and genetic factors have all been implicated. Most patients with diverticula  are asymptomatic (diverticulosis); however, approximately 20% develop symptoms such as intermittent abdominal pain and change in bowel habit and are said to have symptomatic diverticular disease. Abdominal complications of ascariasis in childhood
CONCLUSION: The creation of protocols and greater debate on this subject should be encouraged for a better understanding of the disease and to establish an early diagnosis and adequate treatment for children with complications resulting from massive infestation by Ascaris lumbricoides.PMID:38522478 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2024.02.001 (Source: Jornal de Pediatria)

Episodic Abdominal Pain —An Unexpected Cause for a Common Clinical Problem
AbstractA previously healthy 55-year-old male patient presented repeatedly to the emergency department with severe episodic periumbilical abdominal pain. After an extensive diagnostic work-up and subsequent clinical deterioration, appendiceal diverticulitis was diagnosed. We identified a correlation of white blood cell counts and possibly faecal calprotectin with the clinical presentation. We suggest that appendiceal diverticulitis should be considered in middle-aged patients with recurrent episodes of abdominal pain that correlate with laboratory markers of inflammation. Risk of Cancer in Patients with Diverticular Disease: A Population-based Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show an increased long-term relative risk of cancer following a diagnosis of DD. These findings are likely due to prevalence of numerous risk factors in DD patients that confer an increased risk of cancer. The decreased relative risk of colorectal cancer might be explained by an increased likelihood of DD patients undergoing colonoscopy with polypectomy.PMID:38490316 | DOI:10.1016/j.cgh.2024.02.024 (Source: Clinical Lung Cancer)

Risk of Cancer in Patients with Diverticular Disease: A Population-based Cohort Study
Several studies have investigated the association between diverticular disease (DD) and colorectal cancer. However, whether there is an association between DD and malignancies other than those in the colorectum remains uncertain. (Source: Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Risk of a post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer in patients with diverticular disease: a population-based cohort study
Conclusions Although the absolute risk was low, the relative risk of proximal PCCRCs may be elevated in patients with diverticular disease undergoing colonoscopy compared with patients without the disease.
