Positive outcomes with neoadjuvant chemotherapy in the management of colovesical fistula in cancer: a case report and literature review
We report a 62-year-old male patient diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer combined with sigmoid vesical fistula. In the course of treatment, in addition to conventional surgery, neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) was innovatively used. The sigmoid tumor and fistula were significantly shrunken. Radical surgery achieved negative margins. (Source: Frontiers in Pharmacology)

Treating a Bypass with Bypass Surgery: Repair of a Duodeno-sigmoid Fistula Complicating Acute Diverticulitis
We describe a rare complication of diverticulitis: a duodeno-colic fistula in a patient with an elongated sigmoid colon (dolicosigma). The patient complained of abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, and feculent vomiting. Radiological studies and gastroscopy demonstrated a fistula between the second portion of the duodenum and the sigmoid colon. Curative surgery cured the fistula and completely resolved its associated signs and symptoms. (Source: Digestive Diseases and Sciences)

Free perforation during the first episode of acute diverticulitis: can it be avoided?
AbstractThe aims of the present study are to compare the severity of acute diverticulitis in the first episode and in later bouts, and to determine whether there are risk factors for the presence of free perforation at the onset of diverticulitis. A single-center retrospective study was conducted of patients who developed a first episode of acute diverticulitis between January 2011 and August 2021 diagnosed by computed tomography and followed up for at least 1  year. Free perforation was considered to be present in patients with diverticulitis stage III and IV according to the Hinchey classification (modified by Wasvary)....

Current Management of Diverticulitis
Diverticulosis and diverticulitis remain common diagnoses in western countries, and the incidence continues to rise. Diverticulitis accounts for roughly one-third of admissions to acute care hospitals annually, with even more patients being treated as outpatients due to improved understanding of risk stratification and the natural history of disease progression. Thus, having a thorough understanding of the etiology of the disease in conjunction with computed tomography findings and patient presentation can help dictate the appropriate treatment. Robotic natural orifice specimen extraction surgery (NOSES) for anterior resection
Ann Coloproctol. 2023 Dec 19. doi: 10.3393/ac.2022.00458.0065. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMinimally invasive colorectal surgery is currently well-accepted, with open techniques being reserved for very difficult cases. Laparoscopic colectomy has been proven to have lower mortality, complication, and ostomy rates; a shorter median length of stay; and lower overall costs when compared to its open counterpart. This trend is seen in both benign and malignant indications. Natural orifice specimen extraction surgery (NOSES) in colorectal surgery was first described in the early 1990s. Three recent meta-analyses comparing trans...

Endoscopic double-band ligation without resection for polypoid lesion due to sigmoid diverticulitis
Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2023 Dec 14. doi: 10.17235/reed.2023.10095/2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHere we report a 60-year-old male with a polypoid lesion due to sigmoid diverticulitis treated by endoscopic double-band ligation without resection. The method offers a safe, simple and effective way for polypoid lesions caused by diverticulitis and avoids the risk of perforation.PMID:38095177 | DOI:10.17235/reed.2023.10095/2023 (Source: Revista Espanola de Enfermedades Digestivas)
