Features of colonic diverticulitis in children and adolescents: A multicenter study
CONCLUSION: While uncommon, CD in children and adolescents is a growing concern, with most cases presenting as solitary lesions in the cecum or ascending colon. The severity is typically less than that in adults, and conservative treatment is generally effective. These findings underscore the need for specific management guidelines for pediatric CD, advocating for non-surgical initial approaches.PMID:38388263 | DOI:10.1016/j.asjsur.2024.02.049 (Source: Asian Journal of Surgery)

No bidirectional relationship between inflammatory bowel disease and diverticular disease: a genetic correlation and Mendelian randomization study
Conclusion: This study’s findings do not provide evidence for a causal relationship between IBD and DD, which contradicts the majority of observational studies. (Source: Frontiers in Genetics)

Utilization of point-of-care ultrasound to evaluate for enterovesical fistula
AbstractEnterovesical fistula formation is a relatively rare disease process although a common complication for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), notably Crohn ’s disease. Enterovesical fistulas most commonly arise from diverticulitis (65–80%), cancer (10–20%), or Crohn’s disease (5–7%). An increasing amount of evidence supports the use of ultrasonography as the primary imaging method for the monitoring of complications in individuals with a docu mented history of IBD. Our case report presents a 30-year-old female with a history of Crohn’s disease who presented to the Emergency Department with con...

The influence of preoperative e intraoperative factors in predicting postoperative morbidity and mortality in perforated diverticulitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
AbstractTo determine if preoperative-intraoperative factors such as age, comorbidities, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification, body mass index (BMI), and severity of peritonitis affect the rate of morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing a primary anastomosis (PA) or Hartmann Procedure (HP) for perforated diverticulitis.  This is a systematic review and meta-analysis, conducted according to PRISMA, with an electronic search of the PubMed, Medline, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases. The search retrieved 614 studies, of which 11 were included. Preoperative-Intraoperative factors inclu...

Repressed mitochondrial function limits crypt fissioning in inflammatory bowel disease
In this study, we postulate that in diverticulitis (DvC) patients, moderate-to-severe level of tissue inflammation induces fissioning of crypts with normal level of mitochondria. (Source: Gastroenterology)

Development of an image-based Random Forest classifier for prediction of surgery duration of laparoscopic sigmoid resections
ConclusionA Random Forest classifier trained on demographic and CT imaging biometric patient data could predict procedure duration outliers of laparoscopic sigmoid resections. Pending validation in a multicenter study, this approach could potentially improve procedure scheduling in visceral surgery and be scaled to other procedures. Sarcopenia is a Poor Predictor of Outcomes in Elective Colectomy for Diverticulitis
CONCLUSIONS: Incidence of sarcopenia was high in patients undergoing elective colectomy for diverticulitis in our practice, but sarcopenia was not associated with adverse perioperative outcomes. In select patients, elective colectomy for diverticulitis can be safely performed in the presence of sarcopenia.PMID:38263953 | DOI:10.1177/00031348241229630 (Source: The American Surgeon)

No role for standard imaging workup of patients with clinically evident necrotizing soft tissue infections: a national retrospective multicenter cohort study
ConclusionIn patients with clinically evident NSTIs, there is no role for standard imaging workup unless it is used to examine underlying diseases (e.g., diverticulitis, pancreatitis). In atypical presenting NSTIs, CT or MRI scans provided the most useful information. To prevent unnecessary imaging and radiation and not delay treatment, the decision to perform imaging studies in patients with a clinical suspicion of a NSTI must be made extremely careful. The role of infectious parameters in the early prediction of complicated colonic diverticulitis
CONCLUSION: The study found that the percentage of immature granulocytes, previously deemed a reliable marker in many studies, did not significantly predict complicated colonic diverticulitis. Further comprehensive studies are necessary to explore inflammatory markers in colonic diverticulitis more thoroughly.PMID:38226576 | DOI:10.14744/tjtes.2023.42573 (Source: Turkish Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery : TJTES)
