Fight Aging! Newsletter, January 22nd 2024
In this study, we found that DMC reduced the SASP level in senescent cells. Furthermore, senescent cells enter irreversible cell cycle arrest, which involves the activation of p53/p21 and Rb/p16. In this study we found that the expression levels of p21 and p16 were decreased after DMC treatment. The downregulation of p21 may be attributed to the decrease of p53. In this study, we found that the mRNA level of p53 was reduced after DMC treatment. Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent cell death process, which is accompanied by iron accumulation. Our previous study reported an important role of FECH, an enzyme inserts ferro...

A Novel Proteomic Aging Clock
By now there are most likely dozens of published aging clocks constructed from various omics databases. The proliferation of new clocks isn't helping to solve the fundamental problem with this approach to assessing biological age, which is that the predicted biological age produced by a clock isn't actionable, as no-one yet understands how the clocks relate to causative processes of aging. Thus factions within the research community are arguing for standardization to a single clock, followed by focused effort on understand how those clock measurements relate to underlying processes of aging. Using a large proteomi...

2024 Intentions
After nearly 20 years of blogging about self-development, this year I intend to contribute mainly through video instead of writing, which is a big change for me. I want this to be the first year that I publish more new videos than articles. I’ll still share new YouTube videos via my blog, but if you’re into YouTube, you may want to subscribe to my channel there. In this first new video of 2024, I also reveal many other intentions; recent decisions; and updates about psychedelics explorations, Conscious Growth Club, the new Engage course, and more. I recorded this one mainly for long-term members of this comm...

What ’ s in a name?
What names we give the flora and fauna. Names are critical for scientific discourse and general conversation alike. They can be weird and wonderful, informative, confusing, hilarious even, and sometimes baffling. While common, or vernacular, names vary wildly, science, of course, has a relatively standardised method of naming living things. The common format, which is often colloquially known as the Latin name, is to have the species in a genus, a family group, and then to follow that genus name with the species name. For example, in the UK, we might talk of the Snowdrop, or the Common Snowdrop. This delicate plant with wh...

How AI and AIOps are Reshaping the Future of Healthcare IT
The following is a guest article by Scott Pross, VP of Technology at Monalytic, a SolarWinds Company The future of healthcare will be powered by artificial intelligence (AI). AI can enhance the speed and accuracy of diagnosis, book appointments, support clinical trials, reduce costs and errors, and improve cybersecurity posture. AI can also address the shortage of skilled healthcare workers – particularly in the field of IT operation. Indeed, a study by the Health Management Academy found that 47.5% of health systems currently use AI solutions to address workforce challenges and improve productivity, with the rest consid...

Using our Journal Evaluation Tool to determine credibility of a journal
It’s been about seven years since we developed a tool (a downloadable rubric and explainer) to help our faculty determine the credibility of a journal. You can download the tool at https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/librarian_pubs/40/ and read about the development of it at https://jlsc-pub.org/articles/abstract/10.7710/2162-3309.2250/. People have told us – often! – how they use the tool in their personal decision-making about where to publish, as well as sharing the tool in their classrooms and with friends. When we developed the tool, I hoped the set of decision criteria in it would be used to further the broader disc...

New Book Sketches
One of my favorite things when writing children ' s books is when my wonderful and talented illustrator,Kyra Teis, takes my notes and creates the characters and illustrations for the picture book. It ' s so exciting to see my ideas come to life, and to have the beginning artwork take shape. My next book will focus on jealousy in children in late 2024. Can ' t wait to share more.  (Source: Dr. Deborah Serani)

Drop some positivity in the next article you peer review
We recently received feedback on an article we submitted for publication, and I was delighted that the comments we received were all entirely positively toned and productive. The reviewer(s) brought up some issues that we could act on in the revision, and we were happy to make those changes. Overall, it was a good vibes review experience. Upon reflection, it was nice because of the attitude of the reviewer’s comments. Over the years I’ve become accustomed to critical reviews that are couched in either neutral or negative language. That’s fine, I can take a critical review, and I know reviewers are likely just trying ...

What ’ s Special About AI Risks and Remedies in Health Care?
This article looks at what’s special about AI in health care, and some ways to address its needs. For this article, I spoke just to lawyers, because we’ve heard plenty from the technologists about AI’s potential and what they’re doing to minimize risk. The perspective of attorneys with an expertise in health care is illuminating. An anthology from STAT also contains some relevant analyses and case studies. Liability and Licensing Are clinicians facing the risk of lawsuits if they heed the advice of AI engines? Where do the new systems differ from older forms of clinical decision support—or the s...

During the past decade, finally, health care is starting to deal in a structured, measurable manner with the life factors and environments that play the biggest role in their patients’ health. In conclusion, given the relative safety and the favourable effects of aspirin, its use in cancer seems justified, and ethical implications of this imply that cancer patients should be informed of the present evidence and encouraged to raise the topic with their healthcare team. « Back to Top Aged Transplant Organs Cause Harm to Younger Recipients https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/12/aged-transplant-organs-cause-harm-to-younger-recipients/ Old tissues are dysfunctional in ways that young tissues are not.
