Sunday Sermonette: Book banning
Ch. 4 is pretty self-explanatory -- the neighbors feel threatened by the Jews rebuilding the city wall but Nehemiah is resolute and they do it anyway. So I ' ll take this opportunity to talk about the current book banning wars. There are some distinctions that people seem to elide in this controversy so I ' ll try to be clear about my own position.  Of course there is plenty of literature that isn ' t appropriate for third graders to read, for various reasons. It might be just too disturbing, and give them nightmares. They might misunderstand it -- for example, literature featuring unreliable or malevolent narrat...

Jimmy Lai: Prisoner of the State
ConclusionHong Kong ’s turn from the principles that made it a great society—namely, the rule of law, nonintervention, and a free market for ideas—has made successful entrepreneurs and advocates of freedom like Jimmy Lai enemies of the state. By silencing critics—under the guise of national security—both Ho ng Kong and China have sacrificed liberty in the name of “stability.” Reversing that trend is the biggest challenge they face in achieving social and economic harmony. Fight Aging! Newsletter, May 29th 2023
In this study, we used a Drosophila model to understand the role of the dec2P384R mutation on animal health and elucidate the mechanisms driving these physiological changes. We found that the expression of the mammalian dec2P384R transgene in fly sleep neurons was sufficient to mimic the short sleep phenotype observed in mammals. Remarkably, dec2P384Rmutants lived significantly longer with improved health despite sleeping less. In particular, dec2P384R mutants were more stress resistant and displayed improved mitochondrial fitness in flight muscles. Differential gene expression analyses went on to reveal several altered tr...
