Soybean lectin-triggered IL-6 secretion induces autophagy to kill intracellular mycobacteria through P2RX7 dependent activation of the JAK2/STAT3/Mcl-1 pathway
Cytokine. 2023 Sep 14;171:156366. doi: 10.1016/j.cyto.2023.156366. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCytokine therapy and cytokine-mediated autophagy have been used as prominent host-directed therapy (HDT) approaches to restrain M. tb growth in the host cell. In the present study, we have dissected the anti-tubercular activity of Soybean lectin (SBL) through cytokine-mediated autophagy induction in differentiated THP-1 (dTHP-1) cells. A significant increase in IL-6 expression was observed in both uninfected and mycobacteria infected dTHP-1 cells through the P2RX7 mediated pathway via PI3K/Akt/CREB-dependent signalling after SB...

Advances in immunotherapy for biliary tract cancers
Chin Med J (Engl). 2023 Aug 29. doi: 10.1097/CM9.0000000000002759. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBiliary tract cancers (BTC) are a heterogeneous disease with poor prognosis, including gallbladder cancer (GBC), intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ECC). Although surgery is currently the primary regimen to treat BTC, most BTC patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage and miss the opportunity of surgical eradication. As a result, non-surgical therapy serves as the main intervention for advanced BTC. In recent years, immunotherapy has emerged as the one of the most promising therapies i...

Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio an inflammatory biomarker, and prognostic marker in heart failure, cardiovascular disease and chronic inflammatory diseases: New insights for a potential predictor of anti-cytokine therapy responsiveness
Microvasc Res. 2023 Aug 24:104598. doi: 10.1016/j.mvr.2023.104598. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the 20th century, research focused on cholesterol and lipoproteins as the key mechanism in establishing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Given that some studies demonstrated subclinical atherosclerosis in subjects without conventional cardiovascular risk factors, the elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels alone cannot account for the entire burden of atherosclerosis. Hence, large-scale clinical trials demonstrated the operation of immune and inflammatory pathways in ASCVD. In this regard, the evidence e...

Sonodynamic Cytokine Nanocomplexes with Specific Stimulation towards Effector T cell for Combination Cancer Immunotherapy
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Aug 16:e202308362. doi: 10.1002/anie.202308362. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCytokine therapy mediates the interaction between immune cells and non-immune cells in tumor microenvironment (TME), forming a promising approach in cancer therapy. However, the dose-dependent adverse effects and non-selective stimulation of cytokines limit their clinical use. We herein report a sonodynamic cytokine nano-immunocomplex (SPNAI) that specifically activates effector T cells (Teffs) for antitumor immunotherapy. By conjugating anti-interleukin-2 (anti-IL-2) antibodies S4B6 on the semiconducting polymer nano...

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 3739: The Use of Targeted Cytokines as Cancer Therapeutics in Glioblastoma
B. Heimberger Cytokines play an important role in regulating the immune response. Although there is great interest in exploiting cytokines for cancer immunotherapy, their clinical potential is limited by their pleiotropic properties and instability. A variety of cancer cell-intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics pose a barrier to effective treatments including cytokines. Recent studies using gene and cell therapy offer new opportunities for targeting cytokines or their receptors, demonstrating that they are actionable targets. Current efforts such as virotherapy, systemic cytokine therapy, and cellular and gene therap...

Inhaled nitric oxide as rescue therapy in severe ARDS cases due to COVID-19 pneumonia: a single center experience
CONCLUSIONS: In our study, it was determined that iNO applied as a rescue treatment in patients with severe ARDS improved oxygenation. Although the effect of iNO on survival was low, it may be interpreted as clinically significant considering the severity of the general clinical condition of the patients.PMID:37458665 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202307_33002 (Source: European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences)
