Identification of Spinal Cord Neurons Involved in The Modulation of Interstitial Cystitis
Interstitial cystitis and bladder pain (IC/BPS) are chronic conditions that affect 8 million women in the United States. Despite this knowledge, our understanding of spinal mechanisms that are engaged in the IC processing is largely unknown. Previous studies used immediate early gene (cFos) mapping for precise dissection of brain circuits that mediate IC/BPS. Here we identified a subgroup of neurons in the L6-S1 spinal cord that are critical for IC/BPS. We manipulated the activity of these spinal neurons using chemogenetics and ablation approaches to study the role of these neurons in IC/BPS. (Source: The Journal of Pain)

Reirradiation salvage radiotherapy for recurrent prostate cancer after primary low-dose brachytherapy
ConclusionsOur data suggest that the treatment of locally recurrent prostate cancer with S-EBRT could provide adequate disease control safely and be used as an additional treatment in the natural history of prostate cancer patients. However, the results are still early and the sample is small; larger studies with longer follow-up would be mandatory. (Source: Clinical and Translational Oncology)

Urinary Viral Spectrum in Patients with Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome and the Clinical Efficacy of Valacyclovir Treatment
Biomedicines. 2024 Feb 26;12(3):522. doi: 10.3390/biomedicines12030522.ABSTRACTOur previous study showed that the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) may be the etiology for some patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS); hence, the current study aimed to investigate the urinary viral spectrum in patients with IC/BPS and the clinical efficacy of valacyclovir. Twenty-eight patients were prospectively enrolled for valacyclovir 500 mg twice a day for 4 weeks. Urine samples were collected from IC/BPS patients and 30 controls. The primary outcome was the difference in the visual analog scale (VAS) pain score, and ...

Comparative genetic and pathogenic approaches of Escherichia coli isolated simultaneously from pyometra and urine of bitches
In conclusion, this study revealed the high genomic similarity between pyometra and urineE. coli isolates, as well as the virulent capacity of both to colonize endometrial and urothelial cells. The findings of this study underscore the importance of concurrently managing both infections clinically and could potentially contribute to future resources for the prevention of cystitis and pyometra. Effects of onabotulinum toxin ‐A injection on sexual function in women with refractory interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome: A prospective study
ConclusionsIntravesical BoNT-A injection in the treatment of women with refractory IC/BPS improves sexual functions. It also significantly improves pain and symptom scores. Both trigone-sparing and trigone-including injections are similarly safe and effective. (Source: LUTS: Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms)
