Detection of Human Paragonimiasis by ELISA Using Recombinant Paragonimus westermani Cysteine Protease 7
This report is the first to describe the development of an ELISA for the diagnosis of Paragonimus spp. in Costa Rica and Central America. Using this ELISA in the health system of Costa Rica is recommended to detect infections.PMID:37253437 | DOI:10.4269/ajtmh.22-0452 (Source: The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene)

Optimal restoration for pollination services increases forest cover while doubling agricultural profits
We present a novel planning framework to determine the best spatial arrangement for restoration in agricultural landscapes while accounting for yield improvements over 40 years following restoration. We explored a range of production and conservation goals using a coffee production landscape in Costa Rica as a case study. Our results show that strategic restoration can increase forest cover by approximately 20% while doubling collective landholder profits over 40 years, even when accounting for land taken out of production. We show that restoration can provide immense economic benefits in the long run, which may be pivotal...

Mycobacterium marinum Infection after Iguana Bite in Costa Rica
We describe a case of Mycobacterium marinum soft-tissue infection after an iguana bite in Costa Rica that was diagnosed through 16S rRNA sequencing and mycobacterial culture. This case informs providers of potential etiologies of infection after iguana bites.PMID:37209698 | DOI:10.3201/eid2906.230062 (Source: Emerging Infectious Diseases)

Genome Analysis of Triploid Hybrid Leishmania Parasite from the Neotropics
Emerg Infect Dis. 2023 May;29(5):1076-1078. doi: 10.3201/eid2905.221456.ABSTRACTWe discovered a hybrid Leishmania parasite in Costa Rica that is genetically similar to hybrids from Panama. Genome analyses demonstrated the hybrid is triploid and identified L. braziliensis and L. guyanensis-related strains as parents. Our findings highlight the existence of poorly sampled Leishmania (Viannia) variants infectious to humans.PMID:37081624 | DOI:10.3201/eid2905.221456 (Source: Emerging Infectious Diseases)

Mortality and disability-adjusted life years in motorcyclists in Latin America and the Caribbean during the first decade of action for road safetyMortalidad y a ños de vida ajustados por discapacidad de los motociclistas en América Latina y el Caribe en la primera década de seguridad vial
CONCLUSIONS: The data underscore the importance of developing surveillance actions aimed at preventing motorcycle accidents, since the observed declining rates are still insufficient to address the morbidity and mortality associated with road accidents as a public health problem.PMID:37066130 | PMC:PMC10100995 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2023.68 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

Frequencies of variants in genes associated with dyslipidemias identified in Costa Rican genomes
Front Genet. 2023 Mar 30;14:1114774. doi: 10.3389/fgene.2023.1114774. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTDyslipidemias are risk factors in diseases of significant importance to public health, such as atherosclerosis, a condition that contributes to the development of cardiovascular disease. Unhealthy lifestyles, the pre-existence of diseases, and the accumulation of genetic variants in some loci contribute to the development of dyslipidemia. The genetic causality behind these diseases has been studied primarily on populations with extensive European ancestry. Only some studies have explored this topic in Costa Rica, and none have fo...

Analysis of cervical HPV infections among unvaccinated young adult women to inform vaccine strategies in this age group: the Costa Rica HPV Vaccine Trial
Conclusion Young adult women may benefit from HPV vaccination if newly acquired vaccine-preventable oncogenic infections lead to cervical precancer and cancer. HPV vaccination targeting this population may provide additional opportunities for primary prevention. Trial registration number NCT00128661. (Source: Sexually Transmitted Infections)
