Potential of Capric Acid in Neurological Disorders: An Overview
Neurochem Res. 2022 Nov 7. doi: 10.1007/s11064-022-03809-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo solve the restrictions of a classical ketogenic diet, a modified medium-chain triglyceride diet was introduced which required only around 60% of dietary energy. Capric acid (CA), a small molecule, is one of the main components because its metabolic profile offers itself as an alternate source of energy to the brain in the form of ketone bodies. This is possible with the combined capability of CA to cross the blood-brain barrier and achieve a concentration of 50% concentration in the brain more than any other fatty acid in plasma. N...

A survey on the stabilizing effect of osmolytes on the ultrasound-irradiated lipase for efficient enzymatic hydrolysis of coconut oil
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2022 Oct 8;220:112910. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2022.112910. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe stabilizing effect of some osmolytes including betaine, mannitol, proline, sorbitol, and trehalose (each 0.5 M) was investigated on the ultrasound-irradiated (60 kHz and 138 W, for 240 min) lipase by determination of the enzyme half-life time, evaluation of the enzymatic reaction velocity (Vmax), and hydrolysis of coconut oil for production of lauric acid (the main saturated fatty acid of the oil). The enzyme conformational stability was also assessed by circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spect...

Ca:Mg ratio, medium-chain fatty acids, and the gut microbiome
CONCLUSIONS: Optimizing Ca:Mg intake ratios to around 2.3 through 12-week personalized Mg supplementation leads to increased circulating levels of MCFAs (i.e. C7:0 and C8:0), which is attributed to enhanced production from gut microbial fermentation and, maybe, sucrose consumption.PMID:36223712 | DOI:10.1016/j.clnu.2022.08.031 (Source: Clinical Colorectal Cancer)

Screening of cellulose-degrading yeast and evaluation of its potential for degradation of coconut oil cake
Coconut oil cake (COC), a byproduct of oil extraction, contains high levels of cellulose. The aim of this study was to isolate a cellulose-degrading yeast from rotten dahlia that can effectively use COC as the only carbon source for cellulase secretion. Based on screening, Meyerozyma guillermondii CBS 2030 (M. guillermondii) was identified as a potential candidate, with the highest cellulolytic activity among the yeast strains isolated, with the carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase) activity reaching 102.96 U/mL on day 5. The cellulose in COC samples was evaluated before and after degradation by M. guillermondii. Analysis based...
