Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D response to vitamin D supplementation using different lipid delivery systems in middle-aged and older adults: A randomised controlled trial
Br J Nutr. 2023 Mar 13:1-25. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523000636. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFood fortification improves vitamin D intakes but is not yet mandated in many countries. Combining vitamin D with different dietary lipids altered vitamin D absorption in in-vitro and postprandial studies. This randomised, placebo-controlled trial examined the effect of the lipid composition of a vitamin D fortified dairy drink on change in 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations. Sixty-three healthy adults aged 50+ years were randomised to one of the following for 4 weeks: vitamin D fortified olive oil dairy drink, vitamin D fo...

Coconut oil saturated fatty acids improved energy homeostasis but not blood pressure or cognition in VCD-treated female mice
Endocrinology. 2023 Jan 10:bqad001. doi: 10.1210/endocr/bqad001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTObesity, cardiometabolic disease, cognitive decline, and osteoporosis are symptoms of postmenopause, which can be modeled using 4-vinylcyclohexene diepoxide (VCD)-treated mice to induce ovarian failure and estrogen deficiency combined with high fat-diet (HFD) feeding. The trend of replacing saturated fatty acids (SFAs), for example coconut oil, with seed oils that are high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), specifically linoleic acid (LA), may induce inflammation, gut dysbiosis, and worsen symptoms of estrogen deficiency. To...

Acute postprandial gut hormone, leptin, glucose and insulin responses to resistant starch in obese children: a single blind crossover study
Conclusion This study shows that M2, the meal containing RS alone, induced beneficial effects on acute postprandial glucose, insulin and ghrelin concentrations in obese children without diabetes. Acute postprandial satiety scores were not significantly affected by the three meals. Trial registration number SLCTR/2020/007. (Source: Archives of Disease in Childhood)

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 8622: Green Downscaling of Solvent Extractive Determination Employing Coconut Oil as Natural Solvent with Smartphone Colorimetric Detection: Demonstrating the Concept via Cu(II) Assay Using 1,5-Diphenylcarbazide
Vongboot Coconut oil as a natural solvent is proposed for green downscaling solvent extractive determination. Determination of Cu(II) using 1,5-Diphenylcarbazide (DPC) was selected as a model for the investigation. Cu(II)-DPC complexes in aqueous solution were transferred into coconut oil phase. The change of the color due to Cu(II)-DPC complexes in coconut oil was followed by using a smartphone and image processing. A single standard concept was used for a series of Cu(II) standard solutions. A downscaling procedure using a 2 mL vial provided a calibration: color intensity = −142 [Cu(II)] + 222, (R2 = 0...
