Incorporation of bioactive glass-ceramic into coconut oil for remineralization of incipient carious lesions
This study evaluated the efficacy of incorporating different concentrations of bioactive glass-ceramic (Biosilicate) into coconut oil on the remineralizing potential and surface roughness of white spot lesions. Fragments (6 x 6 x 2mm) of bovine teeth were sectioned and initial microhardness (KHN) and surface roughness (Ra) readings were obtained. The samples were submitted to cariogenic challenge to form white spot lesions and were separated into six groups (n=13): 1) Artificial Saliva (AS); 2) Coconut Oil (CO); 3) CO+2% Biosilicate (CO+2%Bio); 4) CO+5% Biosilicate (CO+5%Bio); 5) 2% Biosilicate Suspension (2% Bio) and 6) 5...

Coconut oil ameliorates behavioral and biochemical alterations induced by D-GAL/AlCl < sub > 3 < /sub > in rats
Brain Res. 2023 Dec 3:148704. doi: 10.1016/j.brainres.2023.148704. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative condition marked by cognitive impairment. Although coconut oil has been shown to be potentially beneficial in reducing AD-related cognitive deficits, information on its mechanism of action is limited. Thus, we investigated the effects of coconut oil on spatial cognitive ability and non-cognitive functions in a rat model of AD induced by G-galactose (D-GAL) and aluminum chloride (AlCl3), and examined the changes in synaptic transmission, cholinergic activity, n...

Evaluation of possible neuroprotective effects of virgin coconut oil on aluminum ‐induced neurotoxicity in an in vitro Alzheimer's disease model
AbstractAlzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurological disorder that affects various cognitive functions, behavior, and personality. AD is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, including exposure to aluminum (Al). Virgin coconut oil (VCO) may have potential as a natural neuroprotectant against AD. Aim of this study was to determine neuroprotective effects of VCO on Al-induced neurotoxicity in an in vitro AD model. SH-SY5Y cells were initially cultured in normal growth medium and then differentiated by reducing fetal bovine serum content and adding retinoic acid (RA). Later, bra...

Effect of guar gum-chitosan composites edible coating functionalized with essential oils on the postharvest shelf life of Khasi mandarin at ambient condition
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Oct 16:127489. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.127489. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the present study, the effects of guar gum (0.7 %):chitosan (0.3 %) based composite edible coating functionalized with coconut oil and essential oils like clove bud oil and cinnamon bark oil were investigated on the postharvest shelf life of Khasi mandarins at ambient conditions (25 ± 5 °C, RH 75 ± 5 %) up to 20 days of storage period. The postharvest characteristics such as weight loss, firmness, acidity, total soluble solids (TSS) and reducing sugar of control and treated fruits were evaluated at 5 days inter...

Comparative study on the in vitro digestion of different lipids in starch-based Pickering emulsions
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Oct 9:127340. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.127340. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStarch-based Pickering stabilizer has attracted more attentions due to its health-friendly attribute. Lipid digestion in Pickering emulsion is the key to its delivery ability for active substances. Herein, in vitro oral-gastric-intestinal digestions of Pickering emulsions stabilized by starch particles with different oil phases (e.g., coconut, corn, olive, and sunflower oils) were investigated. The highest rate of lipid digestion was coconut oil (25.71 %), followed by olive (12.64 %), corn (11.16 %), and sunflower (8....
