Translation of a claims-based frailty index from International Classification of Diseases 9th Revision to 10th Revision
Am J Epidemiol. 2023 Jul 11:kwad151. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwad151. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Faurot frailty index (FFI) is a validated algorithm that uses enrollment and International Classification of Diseases, 9th Edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM)-based billing information from Medicare claims data as a frailty proxy. In October 2015, the US healthcare system transitioned from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM. Applying the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services General Equivalence Mappings, we translated diagnosis-based frailty indicator codes from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM, followed by manual review. Alternative Payment Models and Working with Payers –Key Considerations for Advancing Population Health Goals and Achieving Child Health Equity
This article summarizes approaches to achieving value-based care in Pediatrics, providing a framework for understanding the continuum of models from fee-for-service to advanced alternative payment models. We present key examples of how alternative payment models have been developed and applied at the federal level within Medicare through the work of the  Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Center for Medicaid and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI). We further describe key lessons learned and opportunities to adapt value-based payment models to promote whole child health and equity. Finally, we summarize polic...

Starting from scratch: Creating an antibiotic stewardship program in a Pediatric skilled nursing facility
In October 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) published the Reform of Requirements for Long-Term Care (LTC) Facilities final rule. This rule was a long overdue revision of the requirements that LTC facilities had to meet to participate in CMS programs and had not been comprehensively reviewed and updated since 1991. (Medicare and Medicaid Programs; Reform of Requirements for Long-Term Care Facilities, 2016). As part of this rule, LTC facilities were required to develop an Infection Prevention and Control Program (IPCP) that included an antibiotic stewardship program (ASP) and employ at least one inf...

The Cost of Cancer Care at the End of Life: Implications for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and for Radiation Oncology
Health economics is a tricky business, especially for cancer. On one hand, no monetary cost is commensurate to the saving of a life or providing hope against an insidious disease. On the other hand, how can we weigh expensive therapies against the other pressing needs in our society —childhood poverty, feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless? Perhaps the most straightforward method of valuing cancer therapies is to simply compare the money spent on cancer treatments with each other in situations in which benefits may be limited. Biden ’s plan to tap former North Carolina health chief as CDC director wins praise
Public health advocates today applauded the news that President Joe Biden intends to name Mandy Cohen, a physician and public health expert with broad government experience, to lead the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Biden will appoint Cohen by the end of the month to replace current CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, who will step down on 30 June, The Washington Post reported yesterday , citing three anonymous sources. The White House did not respond to requests for comment and Cohen could not be reached. If named to the job, Cohen would confront the daunting task of rein...

Coding conflicts: Ethical considerations regarding the updated Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service coding guidelines
Dear Conflicted Dermatologist: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services updated their coding guidelines for evaluation and management services in 2021. The new guidelines mandate that medical decision-making can be used to determine the correct evaluation and management code. Dermatologists often use the complexity of medical decision-making to determine the code. The modifications were made to accurately represent modern medical practice, prevent overbilling, and provide ease for administration. (Source: Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology)

PCR209 Comparing the Value of Daily Measurement of Wellbeing for Individuals with Alcohol Use Disorder Versus Reimbursement-Based Timing
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) require patients to be evaluated using setting-specific patient assessment instruments for clinical assessment, payment, and quality assurance. This research examines how wellbeing is assessed in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and the role of measurement timing in understanding dimensions of disability, functional limitations, and wellbeing among individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). SNFs are central to caregiving and provide short- and long-term skilled nursing care. (Source: Value in Health)
