The Value of History and Physical Examination to Optimize Outcomes of Cataract Surgery: A Systematic Review
AANA J. 2023 Dec;91(6):449-454.ABSTRACTThis systematic review was conducted to examine the value of the preoperative history and physical (H&P) examination and preoperative care prior to cataract extraction and the resulting outcomes of adverse events, patient experience, and cost. Four databases were searched using appropriate keywords from 2012 to 2022. Observational studies, randomized controlled trials, and quality improvement studies with data on the precataract H&P were included. Outcome measures were adverse events, cost, and patient experience. Of the 4,170 studies screened, 12 studies were included. Risk s...

Compliance and Documentation for Evaluation and Management Services in Interventional Pain Management Practice
Pain Physician. 2023 Nov;26(7):503-525.ABSTRACTEvaluation of new and established patients is an integral part of interventional pain management. Over the last 3 decades, there has been significant confusion over the proper documentation for evaluation and management (E/M) services in general and for interventional pain management in particular. Interventional pain physicians have learned how to evaluate patients presenting with pain on the basis of their specialty training. Although modern training programs are introducing residents and fellows to the intricacies of E/M services and federal regulations, this has not always...

Case Volume Justification of 3D-Navigated Spinal Procedures: A Cost-Benefit Analysis
This study aims to develop a model that weighs the cost of a typical 3D navigation platform against its clinical benefits to determine the facility case volume required to justify its purchase. Using Medtronic ’s StealthStation and O-Arm as a market example, we calculated the break-even case volume by dividing the cost of the platform by the difference in gross margins between 3D navigation and the standard of care. Total gross margins earned from first-time and revision surgeries were calculated based on each payer’s reimbursement rate and covered case volume, as well as each technology’s revision rate. Values repor...
