Low Treatment Rates of Parasitic Diseases with Standard-of-Care Prescription Drugs in the United States, 2013-2019
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2022 Aug 22:tpmd220291. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.22-0291. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo assess appropriate drug treatment of parasitic diseases in the United States, we examined the treatment rates of 11 selected parasitic infections with standard-of-care prescription drugs and compared them to the treatment rates of two more common bacterial infections (Clostridioides difficile and streptococcal pharyngitis). We used the 2013 to 2019 IBM® MarketScan® Commercial Claims and Encounters and MarketScan® Multi-State Medicaid databases, which included up to 7 years of data for approximately 88 million and 17 m...

Identification of Novel and Safe Fungicidal Molecules against < em > Fusarium oxysporum < /em > from Plant Essential Oils: In Vitro and Computational Approaches
Biomed Res Int. 2022 Jul 26;2022:5347224. doi: 10.1155/2022/5347224. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTPhytopathogenic fungi are serious threats in the agriculture sector especially in fruit and vegetable production. The use of plant essential oil as antifungal agents has been in practice from many years. Plant essential oils (PEOs) of Cuminum cyminum, Trachyspermum ammi, Azadirachta indica, Syzygium aromaticum, Moringa oleifera, Mentha spicata, Eucalyptus grandis, Allium sativum, and Citrus sinensis were tested against Fusarium oxysporum. Three phase trials consist of lab testing (MIC and MFC), field testing (seed treatment and fo...

Liver Flukes Diagnosed by Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography in a Local Immigrant Community
Although a common pathogen in much of Asia, liver flukes are thought to be a rare cause of disease in the United States. In this series, we describe three patients diagnosed with Clonorchis sinensis during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) within one-year at our institution. Differences in the secretory exosomes of Clonorchis sinensis adults at different incubation times
Acta Trop. 2022 Jul 9:106604. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2022.106604. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExosomes are small vesicles of endocytic origin, which are released into the extracellular environment and mediate a variety of physiological and pathological conditions. Exosome-like vesicles (ELVs) have emerged recently as mediators in the parasite-parasite intercommunication and parasite-host interactions. Thus, increased knowledge of C. sinensis ELVs could provide insights into parasite-host interactions. In this experiment, ELVs was purified by ultracentrifugation from the culture medium of C. sinensis adults in vitro i...

Status of Helminthic Infections in Residents around River Basins in the Republic of Korea for 10 Years (2011-2020)
This study evaluated the continuous intensive control program for parasitic diseases including clonorchiasis in areas near the 5 major river basins in Korea over the past 10 years (2011-2020). A total of 335,020 fecal samples (one sample per resident) prepared by the modified sedimentation technic were microscopically examined. Those who expelled helminth eggs were treated with anthelmintics through local health centers and re-examined 3 months later. The overall positive rate of helminths egg was 7.1%. The annual positive rates were dramatically decreased from 14.4% (2011) to 5.9% (2020). The egg positive rate was highest...
