Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 6589: Effect of Extraction Methods on the Antioxidant Potential and Cytotoxicity of the Combined Ethanolic Extracts of Daucus carota L., Beta vulgaris L., Phyllanthus emblica L. and Lycopersicon esculentum against Gastric Adenocarcinoma Cells
This study assessed how three distinct preparation methods affect the phenolic, flavonoid, carotenoid, and ascorbic acid contents, antioxidant level, and cytotoxicity of the combined fruit extract. The fruit samples were taken in the ratio of carrot (6): beetroot (2): tomato (1.5): amla (0.5) and processed into a lyophilized slurry (LS) extract, lyophilized juice (LJ) extract, and hot-air oven-dried (HAO) extract samples. The sample extracts were assessed for their phytoconstituent concentrations and antioxidant and cytotoxic potential. The total phenolic content in LS, LJ, and HAO extracts was 171.20 ± 0.02...

Effect of ultrasound on mass transfer during vacuum impregnation and selected quality parameters of products: A case study of carrots
Ultrason Sonochem. 2023 Sep 6;99:106592. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2023.106592. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMany unit operations in the food industry are diffusional driven. These processes are usually very slow and difficult to handle for specific groups of raw materials. Vacuum impregnation (VI) is one example. Impregnating low-porous or densely-structured materials is problematic and often requires low pressure, which can negatively affect product quality and be expensive in energy consumption. This research aimed to evaluate ultrasound (US) as a factor in intensifying mass transfer and enhancing its effectiveness in th...

Less stick more carrot? Increasing the uptake of deposit contract financial incentives for physical activity: A randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: We provide the first experimental evidence that both matching and customization increase the uptake of a deposit contract for physical activity. We recommend considering both matching and customization to overcome lack of uptake, with a preference for customization since matching a deposit imposes significant additional costs. However, since we found indications that customizable deposits might reduce effectiveness (when the deposits are not matched), we urge for more research on the effectiveness of customizable deposit contracts. Finally, future research should investigate which participant characteristics a...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 6407: Influence of Pre-Treatment and Drying Methods on the Quality of Dried Carrot Properties as Snacks
Kowalska The aim of the current research was to evaluate the effect of pre-treatment and drying methods on the properties of dried carrots. Carrots were blanched (B) (1 or 3 min) or osmotic dehydrated (OD) (15 or 30 min) and dried by either convection (CD), microwave-convection (MW-CD), microwave-vacuum (MVD), or freeze-drying (FD). FD carrots showed the highest dry matter content (93.6–95.8%) and the lowest water activity (0.24–0.38). MVD carrots had lower dry matter content (79.5–95.8%) and two times more water activity (0.447–0.637) than FD. The highest color ...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 6297: Analysis of the Effect of Various Potential Antimicrobial Agents on the Quality of the Unpasteurized Carrot Juice
In conclusion, the use of antimicrobial agents such as essential oils or their derivatives may be a promising way of improving the microbial quality and prolonging the shelf-life of minimally processed foods, such as fresh juices, but the technique requires further research. (Source: Molecules)

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1814: Optimising the Delivery of RHDV to Rabbits for Biocontrol: An Experimental Evaluation of Two Novel Methods of Virus Delivery
ick L. Taggart Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) is established as a landscape-scale biocontrol that assists the management of invasive European rabbits and their impacts in both Australia and New Zealand. In addition to this, it is also available to land managers to augment rabbit control efforts at a local scale. However, current methods of deploying RHDV to rabbits that rely on the consumption of virus-treated baits can be problematic as rabbits are reluctant to consume bait when there is abundant, green, protein-rich feed available. We ran a suite of interrupted time-series experiments to compare the duratio...

Foodborne Botulism, Canada, 2006-2021 < sup > 1 < /sup >
Emerg Infect Dis. 2023 Sep;29(9). doi: 10.3201/eid2909.230409.ABSTRACTDuring 2006-2021, Canada had 55 laboratory-confirmed outbreaks of foodborne botulism, involving 67 cases. The mean annual incidence was 0.01 case/100,000 population. Foodborne botulism in Indigenous communities accounted for 46% of all cases, which is down from 85% of all cases during 1990-2005. Among all cases, 52% were caused by botulinum neurotoxin type E, but types A (24%), B (16%), F (3%), and AB (1%) also occurred; 3% were caused by undetermined serotypes. Four outbreaks resulted from commercial products, including a 2006 international outbreak cau...

Characterization of a novel psyllid-transmitted waikavirus in carrots
Virus Res. 2023 Aug 7:199192. doi: 10.1016/j.virusres.2023.199192. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCarrots collected from the Western Negev region in Israel during the winter of 2019 showed disease symptoms of chlorosis, leaf curling, a loss of apical dominance, and multiple lateral roots that were not associated with known pathogens of the carrot yellows disease. Symptomatic carrots were studied for a possible involvement of plant viruses in disease manifestations using high throughput sequencing analyses. The results revealed the presence of a waikavirus, sharing a ∼70% nucleotide sequence identity with Waikavirus genus ...
