Molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance of Haemophilus influenzae isolates from otitis media in Bulgaria
Acta Microbiol Immunol Hung. 2023 Nov 8. doi: 10.1556/030.2023.02126. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHaemophilus influenzae is one of the main bacteria responsible for otitis media (OM) among children worldwide. We aimed to estimate the distribution of encapsulated and non-capsulated variants (NTHi), biotypes, antibiotic susceptibility, and molecular epidemiology of H. influenzae isolates recovered from pediatric OM cases in Bulgaria.Capsule detection was done by PCR for bexB gene, absent in NTHi. All encapsulated strains were subjected to PCR serotyping. MIC susceptibility testing was performed according to the criteria of...

Genes, Vol. 14, Pages 2023: Navigating the ALS Genetic Labyrinth: The Role of MAPT Haplotypes
Albena Todorova Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by wide clinical and biological heterogeneity, with a large proportion of ALS patients also exhibiting frontotemporal dementia (FTD) spectrum symptoms. This project aimed to characterize risk subtypes of the H1 haplotype within the MAPT (microtubule-associated protein tau) gene, according to their possible effect as a risk factor and as a modifying factor in relation to the age of disease onset. One hundred patients from Bulgaria with sporadic ALS were genotyped for the variants rs1467967, rs242557, rs1800547, rs3785883, ...

A multicenter icet-a study on age at menarche and menstrual cycles in patients with transfusion-dependent thalassemia (tdt) who started early chelation therapy with different chelating agents.
Conclusions: Early chelation does not necessary correlate with efficient chelation during pubertal age. Delayed menarche, related to high SF levels, was still frequent in most Centers and was a forerunner of irregular menstrual cycles, SA and associated complications. Neglecting the importance of adherence to iron chelation therapy (ICT), despite innovative and expensive therapies, may lead to complications and decreased quality of life. Key words: Transfusion-dependent thalassemia, menarche, menstrual cycles, iron chelation therapy (ICT), iron overload, adherence to treatment.  (Source: Mediterranean Journal of ...

Preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRISm) as a spirometric pattern among Bulgarian asthma patients
Conclusion: The restrictive pattern in patients with obstructive diseases is a possible finding and may be due to obesity or pulmonary hyperinflation. Bronchodilator test increases the reliability of the examination. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Cystic fibrosis fransmembrane regulator modulator therapies effect on liver function in Bulgarian patients
Conclusion: We did not identify worsening in the liver status after CFTRm therapy with CTFRm. The results of the study suggest an improvement of liver function after initiation of IVA/LUM. As a limitation of our study there are not patients with very advanced liver cirrhosis included on CFTRm therapy. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)
