High-frequency dynamics of CO < sub > 2 < /sub > emission flux and its influencing factors in a subtropical karst groundwater-fed reservoir, south China
Environ Res. 2024 Feb 26:118552. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.118552. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRevealing the magnitude, dynamics, and influencing factors of CO2 emissions across the water-air interface in karst water with high resolution is crucial for accurately assessing the carbon budget in a karst environment. Due to the limitations of observation methods, the current research is still very insufficient. To solve the above problems and clarify the main influencing factors of CO2 emission in karst water, this study selected Dalongdong (DLD) Reservoir, located in the typical karst peak and valley area in southwest Chi...

What Do Different People Look for in a Partner? Effects of Sex, Sexual Orientation, and Mating Strategies on Partner Preferences
In this study, we evaluated the variation in preference for intelligence, kindness, physical attractiveness, health, and socioeconomic level among individuals of different sexes and sexual orientations in a Brazilian sample. We analyzed the preference scores of 778 heterosexual, bisexual, and homosexual men and women in three budgeted mate design tasks (low vs. medium vs. high budget) and their association with sociosexuality, attachment styles, homogamy, and willingness to engage in short- and long-term relationships. Results indicated a global trait preference order, with intelligence ranking first, followed by kindness,...

Making Oneself “Fit”: Community Perspectives on Disaggregated Race and Ethnicity Data Collection and Reporting in Healthcare Settings
AbstractPatient race/ethnicity data collection in most U.S. health systems abide by federal standards, determined by the federal Office of Management and Budget. Yet, decades of research show that reliance on these categories alone limits understanding of within-group health disparities, systematically erasing key groups from health data. Because granular race/ethnicity data is complex and patients may be hesitant to disclose this personal information, it is important for health leaders to consider community perspectives when making decisions about race/ethnicity data procedures. As such, this study uses community focus gr...

The role of budget impact and its relationship with cost-effectiveness in reimbursement decisions on health technologies in the Netherlands
This article used policy reports and Ministerial correspondence to discuss and elucidate the role of budget impact and its relationship with cost-effectiveness in reimbursement decisions in the Netherlands. The results indicate that CEAs and BIAs are both considered important for informing these decisions. While the requirements regarding CEAs —and application of the associated decision rule—are consistent across the different stages, the same does not hold for BIAs. Importantly, the definition of and evidence on budget impact differs between stages. Some important aspects (e.g. substitution and saving effects) typical...

Decommissioning of a Medical Cyclotron Vault: the Case Study of the National Cancer Institute of Milano
Health Phys. 2024 Feb 19. doi: 10.1097/HP.0000000000001801. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the widespread use of medical cyclotrons for isotope production, radiological and economic consequences related to the decommissioning of particle accelerators are often neglected. However, decommissioning regulation and its related procedures always demand efforts and costs that can unexpectedly impact on budgets. The magnitude of this impact depends strongly on the residual radioactivity of the accelerator and of the vault, and more specifically on the kind and activity concentration of residual radionuclides. This work reports a...

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team
You are starting your intern year of residency, and on day 1 you are leading a medical student, presenting patients in rounds, collaborating with the nurses to address a concern that has come up, and running a family meeting. You start your first job out of residency and are responsible for running rounds, working with the team to determine discharge, and have been asked to join a hospital committee. After 5 five years on the job, you are appointed medical director and need to review performance, budgets, and determine future directions of the team that you supervise. Values Beyond "Health" in Budget Constrained Healthcare Systems
Most current methods to value healthcare treatments only incorporate measures such as Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs), combining gains in Health-Related Quality of Life and Life Expectancy in specific ways. Failure of these methods to recognize other dimensions of value has led to calls for methods to include additional values that are associated with the healthcare treatments, but not captured directly by QALYs. This paper seeks to provide methodologically-sound ways to incorporate additional health-related outcomes, focusing on budget-constrained healthcare systems, where using standard welfare economics (WE) methods...

Carbon dioxide emissions and environmental risks: Long term and short term
This study examines the environmental challenge posed by CO2 emissions from both a long and short-term perspective. In the long term, despite efforts made by countries, our change-point detection analysis shows that there has been no structural change in CO2 emissions since 1950. Without significant efforts, the carbon budget corresponding to the Paris Agreement's target will be exhausted by 2046. To achieve this target, a significant reduction in global CO2 emissions of 3.22% per year is necessary. In the short term, COVID-19 is thought to have relieved pressure on CO2 emissions. However, this study shows that CO2 emissio...
